Sweden. There must be a manuscript in Stockholm,
but I based my writing on a manuscript which
existed before the war in the bibliotheque Nationale,
which has since vanished. Here I have expanded the

(Aragon, Louis 1897-1982). La Naissance de la Paixpar Rene Descarte. ballet danse au chateau royalde Stockholm le jour de la naissance de SaMajeste (1649).But published: Paris: BibliothequeFrancaise pour les amis de l'auteur, J. Dumoulin, (1946).#280 of 300 copies signed by Aragon on the colophon.
When Rene Descartes was 54, he went to Stockholm atthe invitation of Queen Christina. It is said that becauseDescartes refused to dance at a court ball, QueenChristina charged him with writing the verses for a courtballet, La Naissance de la Paix. The ballet was composedfor performance on 8 December 1649, the 23rd birthdayof the Queen. It celebrates the Peace of Westphalia at theend of the Thirty Years’ war, which was more or lesswon by Sweden.
According to a recent study by Richard Watson, "theevidence of Descartes' authorship is virtuallynonexistent... Almost certainly the ballet was written byHelie Poirier, a professional writer of French verse."References: Watson, Richard A,. Descartes’s Ballet(2007)
