PREFACE

The articles in this volume were written based on presentations given at a symposium held at the Aachen University of Technology, Chair of Communication Networks on 13-14 September 2000. The symposium was organized under the aegis of COST Telecommunications Action 256 entitled:

"Modelling and Simulation Environment for Satellite and Terrestrial Communication Networks"

COST (European Co-operation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research) is a framework for scientific and technical cooperation, allowing the co-ordination of national research at a European level. The goal of COST is to ensure that Europe holds a strong position in the field of scientific and technical research for peaceful purposes, by increasing European cooperation and interaction in this field.

COST Actions consist of basic and precompetitive research as well as activities of public utility and concentrate on some 18 areas ranging from social sciences to natural sciences and telecommunications. Currently there are some twenty actions in the telecommunications area one of which is COST Action 256 and its objective is to enhance existing tools and develop new ones supporting the modelling and simulation of new emerging terrestrial and satellite networks.

The Action activities have been concentrated on the following areas, identified to be of major importance within the context of the above action objectives:

Investigations on Existing Simulation Languagesrrools: With particular emphasis on determining the present or emerging problem areas which cannot be satisfactorily addressed with the existing simulators and where additional work needs to be done. Teletraffic Modeling: With emphasis on the stochastic and nonlinear aspects of Network Simulation, and on the "self-similar" nature of the traffic in future broadband networks.

Page 9: MODELING AND SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT FOR …978-1-4615-0863-2/1.pdf · ENVIRONMENT FOR SATELLITE AND TERRESTRIAL COMMUNICATION NETWORKS ... Averill M. Law 25 ... Satellite and Terrestrial

x

Network Access: With emphasis on the modeling of mobility management, and network protocols. Quality of Service: QoS measures, QoS requirements. Propagation: With emphasis on propagation models for mobile and satellite communications, and for wideband optical networks. Theoreticalffechnical Problems in Simulation: With emphasis on Rare Event Simulation, andVerificationIV alidation Problems.

The studies related to the above activities are carried out by members of the Action group, with inputs from invited experts/scientists when deemed necessary, and are coordinated at the Management Committee meetings held two or three times a year. Members participate in other related projects and activities nationally and internationally (e.g. COST, 1ST, lTV, ETSI, ATM Forum) provide opportunities for formal/informal contacts and for dissemination of results. The Management Committee consists of :

Chairman Deputy Chair Technical Secretary Other Members

: Prof Dr Nejat Ince (TR) : Prof Dr Thomas Brazil (IR) : Prof Dr Ercan Topuz (TR) : Prof Dr Miguel Calvo (ES) Mrs Zlatica Cekro (BE) Prof Dr Leandro de Haro (ES) Dr Yim F. Hu (UK) Prof Dr Gerard Maral (F) Dr Stoyan Poryazov (BV) Mr Vladimir Obradovic (GE)

The Management Committee decided early in the year 2000 to pick the brains, as it were, on the subjects of interest to ACTION 256, of external experts/scientists from other COST Actions, software houses, telecommunications companies, universities and government research institutions of not only the COST Countries but also of other continents. A letter of invitation was sent out to known experts and institutions to participate in a symposium with the major aim of harnessing ideas and proposals for improved and new languages and tools to enable network designers, developers and operators to model and simulate networks and services of emerging and future telecommunications systems.

From the papers submitted twenty two were selected for presentation at the symposium; the text of twenty one of these are included in this book. The symposium presentations were made in four sesions as follows:

Session 1: Modelling and Simulation Session 2: Teletraffic Modelling Session 3: Communication Networks Simulation Session 4: Problems in Simulation

xi

The contributors and their coordinates are given in the list herewith attached.

The symposium covered a wide spectrum of subjects dealing coherently with nearly all the important aspects of simulation modeling and tools for the design and performance evaluation of communication techniques and systems particularly the emerging ones.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

As Chairman of COST Action 256 and the Editor of this book I wish to express my sincere thanks to all the members of the Management Committee for their full and active participation in the studies embraced by the Action including the decision to sponsor this symposium in which they presented the results of their individual research in different aspects of modeling and simulation of communication networks. I would particularly like to mention here Prof. Dr. Tom Brazil and Prof. Dr. Ercan Topuz who, as Deputy Chair and Technical Secretary respectively of Action 256, made unique contributions to the organisation and success of the Symposium.

The symposium was very much enriched and gained much breadth and depth by the participation of many experts in the field from outside the Action Group, from the United States of America, Australia and Europe who willingly accepted our invitation to attend and contribute to our deliberations; lowe them many thanks and much gratitude.

Last but by no means least I would like to express my appreciation to the COST Secreteriat for the administrative and financial support given to the Action and to Prof. Dr. Bernhard Walke for making the facilities of his Chair in the Aachen University of Technology available for the Symposium as well as to his Assistant and a member of our Management Committee, Mr. Vladimir Obradovic, who took charge of the local organisation for the Symposium and made a success of it. Finally it gives me pleasure to acknowledge the support I received from Mr. <;agatay Ulul~lk,

Ms. G. C. Ince, Mr. Zerhan Ener and Ms. Belgin Balel as well as from the staff of Kluwer Academic Publishers in the production of this book.
