VISVESVARAYA TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY MODEL QUESTION PAPER

Subject: Site Surveying & Analysis Subject Code: 14ENG2.7

Time: 3 Hours

Maximum Marks: 100

Instructions to candidates:

1) Answer 5 questions choosing ONE question from each module.

2) Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed and clearly stated.Module 1

1. a) Explain classification of surveying based on instruments used.

08

b) Explain the principles of surveying.

12

2. a) Differentiate between Gunters chain and Engineers chain.

10b) A line was measured with a tape which was exactly 30 m at 20o C and found to be 498.48 m. The temperature during measurement was 32o C.Find the true length of the line. Take coefficient of thermal expansion of the tape per o C as 0.000018.

10 Module 23. a) Discuss with sketches various equipment and accessories used in plane table

survey.

10

b) What are three point problems? Explain any one method of solving it.

10

4. a) Define the following terms:

Level lines, Plane of collimation, Bench mark, Change point

08

b) The following readings were taken during a leveling work on continuously

sloping ground using a 4 m staff, at a common interval of 30 m: 0.680, 1.455, 1.855, 2.330, 2.885, 3.380, 1.055, 1.860, 2.265, 3.540, 0.835, 0.945, 1.530, 2.250. RL of starting point was 80.750. Reduce the levels using plane of collimation method. Also find the gradient of line joining first and last points.12Module 3

5. a) What is Contour interval? What are the factors to be considered while selecting

Contour interval?

06

b) List the uses of a Contour map.

06

c) Explain, with sketches, characteristics of Contours.

086. a) Distinguish between:

i. Transiting and Swingingii. Face left and face right observation

iii. Plate level and altitude level

iv. Temporary and Permanent adjustments of a theodolite

10

b) Explain the method of measurement of a horizontal angle by repetitions. List

the errors eliminated by the method.

10Module 47. Suppose, as an architect, you are asked to visit a 1 acre site which is heavily

contoured & you carry a camera. Explain your approach to figure out the terrain.20

8. Explain how the analysis of a site (upto 1 acre) is done wrt the following factors:

a. Vegetation.

06b. Hydrology.

07c. Microclimate.

07Module 5

9. What are the various notations to be indicated in a land survey drawing? Explain

each of their significance.

20

10. Sketch to a scale the cill level plan of a small residence. Indicate all the dimensions

including centre line.
