For Tanzania – always select “CONTENT Menu”. (AL and LA also have Curriculum option) Example: Follow this path in order: 1.Fractions > Equivalent Fractions > Pattern Blocks. Click on (arrow up)(arrow right)(arrow left)(double arrow up)

Content Menu .. Fractions > Equivalent Fractions > Pattern Blocks > Hexagon1 to work through lesson, Hexagon1

2.Double click on “This is one Whole Hexagon” on the first page to have the line read and highlighted.

When <proceed> appears on the bottom right, click on it. Key in “1”, then press <enter>. Key in “2” then press <enter>. Now click on <proceed>. Enter a number … try the number .. “2” .. three times before entering the correct answer. NOTE- Encourage students to risk. A mistake is an opportunity to learn.

3.Click on the 2nd

icon at the top of the screen, MENU.

Now navigate to Hexagon1 and complete the lesson. A blue screen with two options – GO BACK .. or .. CONTINUE, marks the end of a lesson. Return to the Main Menu.

Now note the 2 pencil icons beside lessons Hexagon1 and Hexagon2 which indicate that corresponding frameworks are available. Click on one of the pencil icons to offer tiered frameworks.

Tanzanian Feedback from Task 1 .. Kari and Perri

CONGRATULATIONS TO SALOME, ELISHA AND NOELA!!

Salome and Elisha tried to teach one more student.

The student was a girl and her name was Noela Luca. The topic was fractions.

Also they taught about how to identify to place value.

Noela wants to learn algebra next time.

There were also some challenges that the group faced. This was the first time Noela had use a computer, and she had some trouble initially understanding the lesson. She quickly picked it up though, but is not yet confident she could operate a computer by herself.

Daria was out sick this week, so her and Sylam will be doing their teaching on Monday.

On Monday, the umathx team will teach three more students –

Timotheo Musa, Prosper Paschal, and Theresia George. All of these students are also in Grade 6.

Task 2

The students were able to solve the problem. The found that the answer was 7/24! They really enjoyed seeing their names in the word problem.

Task 3 Work on Paper followed by UMathX on computer.

After completing the project on paper, they were able to very quickly work through the umathx lesson. They said that they solved the problem using the same method for Task 2, and thought the umathx interface was designed well.

Word Problems .. Addition of Fractions with different denominators. NOTE: Since Tanzania Curriculum is not aligned to UMathX, we will use the Content Menu. (Everyone in the world & AL & LA can do that!!) In Al and LA, for example, the teacher and students could follow the Curriculum Menu for CCSS…. 3.NF.01.01

LESSON 1 (TEACHER: THE LESSON ON COMPUTER, IN FRAMEWORK … IS ORGANIZED FOR YOU)

Log in UMathX and follow the path in the Content Menu Fractions > The Meaning of Fractions > Introduction… Think, Write, Say Now we see that the lesson .. Circles has a green pencil beside it .. ie it has a framework already prepared for us. Click on the green pencil Select and print framework .. “Fraction Introduction – Pattern Blocks -1” (the teacher does this BEFORE class) Process… There are many options: ALWAYS: The TEACHER PREPARES the lesson which is already organized below. Many options .. Teacher should model in the first class. Getting Started: Working At It: Off computer 3 at a computer .. In Al and LA, for example, the teacher and students could follow the Curriculum Menu for CCSS… 5.NF.01.02 So .. 1 method is .. Log into UMathX and follow the path below in the Content Menu: Fractions > Adding Fractions > Word Problems Now we see that the lesson .. Eating Candy (as do Goal Scoring and Taking a Walk) .. has green pencil beside it .. ie it has a framework already prepared for us. Click on the green pencil Select and print the framework .. “Adding Fractions – Word Problems with Unlike Denominators -1” (the teacher has this done BEFORE class) TEACHER PREPARES the lesson which is already organized below. Many options .. Teacher could model this in a whole class lesson or student could work in small groups or ...

Getting Started: Working At It: Here we begin OFF COMPUTER. Reflect and Connect: Teacher led discussion and record

NOTE #1: If one checks the CONTENT MENU, one can, of course, meet teacher and student needs by checking lessons between, after and before the lessons above.(note the scaffolding from basic to advanced in Content Menu). OBRIEN .. AL .. LA .. I strongly suggest this Note #1 for you before out next session. Feel free to email me. NOTE #2: I will plan our next lesson for Monday, March 26 .. a series of lessons on ALGEBRAIC THINKING for NOELA in Tanzania as well as for others. NOTE #3: I will plan a lesson next Monday for PLACE VALUE as well. NOTE #4: We will introduce Content Texts as well next week. NOTE #5: The lessons are already there for teacher and student but the teacher must prepare.
