The lead up to ModelExpo 2008 was showingwe would indeed be in

for a memorable event.2008 was to be my last

year as Director after 8 yearsin the role. Additionally, 2008was the year Model Expo wascelebrating its 25thanniversary. To add to thememory credits, Model Expo2008 had a forced change ofdates due to the running of

the V8 Supercars at Sandown Raceway, on what have been traditionallythe Model Expo dates of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The shift indate by several weeks meant that the 2008 event would be run over 2 days instead of the usual 3 – a grand challenge for all!

A large amount of activities needed to be reorganised by thecommittee. Unfortunately due to the reduced days, certain eventsneeded to be curtailed. The 25th anniversary was however madememorable by the special commissioning of a Model Expo 25thAnniversary pin. This was issued to competitors, traders, sponsors andcommittee members. To also mark this year as a special year, uniquetrophies were created that also signified the 25th anniversary event.

These trophies were well deserved by the place-getters as thegeneral standard of modelling across all categories was extremely high.Achieving a commended is a significant accomplishment as thesemodels had progressed to the final stages of judging that would thendetermine the final places.

The standard of Club displays was exceptional, as were themodelling demonstrations. Traders abounded at the 2008 Model Expowith perhaps the biggest and most varied range of products available tomodellers that Model Expo has hosted to date.

As we hectically drew towards the end of the event I took pause toreflect on my eight years and remembered my first and only Expo asDirector at the old Arts and Crafts Pavilion at the Royal Melbourne ShowGrounds. I looked to where Model Expo had progressed to and wasproud to have been a major part of that change. The changes at timeswere controversial and there always seemed to be the knockers ofModel Expo, no matter what was done or how well the various eventsran. I am proud of the committee members who I have worked with, whobraved the criticisms and worked with the tough decisions that ensuredthe continuity of Model Expo and decisions that have contributed to thegrowth and strength of Model Expo today.

My intentions in becoming Director in 2000 were for two reasons. Itwas a job that needed to be done and most importantly, I wanted to putsomething back into the hobby that has given me so much in terms ofenjoyment and close friends. I believe that this was accomplished butnot just by me alone. Much of the credit goes to the Expo committeemembers who perform a myriad of thankless tasks. Their passion, dedication and the willingness to give up their personal time and to worktowards the agreed strategies is what has made Model Expo the event itis today.

It is now time for me to step aside and hand over full control to Renede Koning as the new Model Expo Director. He has been a part of thecommittee for many years and with the other members has created thelegacy of Model Expo in its current form.

It has been my proud honour to have served them and the Australianmodelling community as the Director of Model Expo.

Laurence FarrugiaDirector Model Expo 2000 - 2008.
