The SSS is a safety system that vastly improves wood chipping safety, proactively and effectively preventing wood chipper injury by shutting down the chipper’s in-feed system when an operator enters a defined hazard zone. As the magnets enter a hazard zone defined by the SSS, an instant signal is sent to the chipper’s feed-ing mechanism, shutting it down before the worker can come in contact with the infeed rolls. Reset Stations are located on the two outer sides of the infeed hopper. By simply hovering a hook and loop band next to a reset sta-tion the feed rolls reactivate immediately.

Wrist and ankle bands are worn by the operator, and when the antenna panels located in the infeed hopper detect these bands (pictured to the right), the feed rolls stop immediately preventing the threat of bodily injury. After the operator can remove himself from danger, he simply waves the wrist band over the reset bar to resume chipping.

Everyone knows these machines are designed to eat wood at the rate of 90’ per minute, but I would ask you to consider the following...… 90’ per minute translates to 18” per second. If you are 6’ tall, 72” from the ground to the top of your head, and you fell 6’ away from the infeed area, you have FOURSECONDS(yes, four!) to come up with your escape plan, find the last chance strings, that are hopefully in good repair, reach for the reverse lever or hope someone sees you and has time to help. If you were using a Salsco wood chipper with the SSS Salsco Safety Shield and had the wrist and ankle bands on, the feed rolls would stop in less than a second (yes, less than a second!). You did not have to do anything other than wear these bands that just may have saved your life.

IMPELLER: Machined & fully balanced 1-1/2” thick x 52-1/4” diameter steel impel-ler with six (6) welded & gusseted exhaust paddles. Approximately 999 lbs. 3” diameter machined shaft held in place by self-centering, heavy duty ,cast iron, greaseable 4-bolt flanged bearings, bolted to 1-1/4” steel plate. Two (2) extra wide chip blade pockets machined into impeller to allow extra flow through of debris. Pockets hold a total of ten (10) chip blades. Impeller feeds at a 37˚ angle.
