Cultural Background Gipsy Moth IV

Gipsy Moth IV completed her second round-the-world voyage exactly 40 years after Sir Francis Chichester first made the journey in her.

Page 6: Model 1 Project 6. Learning Objective ☆ To be able to understand the listening material and take notes. ☆ To be able to understand the main idea news

Then the yachtsman was met by more than 200,000 people as he brought the ocean-battered ketch into Plymouth Sound on May 28, 1967, completing the first true solo circumnavigation. Yesterday his son, Giles Chichester, was at the same spot to welcome the yacht. Three British teenagers – Grant McCade, 16, and Kerry Prideaux and Glen Austin, both 18 – had joined an experienced skipper as crew for the final leg from Gibraltar.

They were the last of 90 disadvantaged young people who have helped to sail Gipsy Moth IV, in 30 legs, since she left Plymouth in September 2005. The UK Sailing Academy, which spent £ 650,000 on her restoration, organised the trip.

Ⅳ Speaking Material Learning Pair WorkAsk your partner this question:

Do you know how to practice listening skills properly?

Page 30: Model 1 Project 6. Learning Objective ☆ To be able to understand the listening material and take notes. ☆ To be able to understand the main idea news

Listening Skills 听力技巧 1. 学会听关键词 Use keywords (noun=principal words) or keyphrases to help

you understand the general ideas. If you understand "New York", "business trip", "last year" you can assume (verb=to take for granted, suppose) that the person is speaking about a business trip to New York last year. This may seem obvious to you, but remember that understanding the main idea will help you to understand the detail as the person continues to speak.

关键词或者关键的词组能够帮助理解文章大意。举个例子来说,如果你听到 New York,business trip,last year 这样的词,你可以假设说话人要表达的是“去年到纽约的出差旅行”。这个方法对你来说很容易,但是要记住:理解文章大意会帮助你理解接下来将要提到的一些细节。

Page 31: Model 1 Project 6. Learning Objective ☆ To be able to understand the listening material and take notes. ☆ To be able to understand the main idea news

2. Listen for Context 注意上下文关系及语境 Let's imagine that your English speaking friend says "...I bought

this great tuner at JR's. It was really cheap and now I can finally listen to National Public Radio broadcasts." You don't understand what a tuner is. If you focus on the word tuneryou might become frustrated. However, if you think in context (noun=the situation explained during the conversation) you probably will understand. For example; bought is the past of buy, listen is no problem and radio is obvious. Now you understand: He bought something - the tuner- to listen to the radio. A tuner must be a kind of radio! This is a simple example but it demonstrates what you need to focus on: Not the word that you don't understand, but the words you do understand.

假设你的一个朋友说: "...I bought this great tuner at JR's. It was really cheap and now I can finally listen to National Public Radio broadcasts." 你可能会困惑什么是 turner 。如果你把精力集中在思考这个词上,你就会觉得很失败。如果你考虑上下文,你也许就会想到,这个tuner 可能是一种收音机。

3 . 跟读标准的英语 众所周知,英语听说不分家。口语提高了,听

力自然也会提高。因此,可借助录音机或复读机跟读标准的的英语,这样能强化语音语调,自然适应和习得地道的发音规则,如失去爆破、连读、弱读等等;跟读还能培养语感 , 增强记忆。

Page 33: Model 1 Project 6. Learning Objective ☆ To be able to understand the listening material and take notes. ☆ To be able to understand the main idea news

4. 多进行速记和记忆方面的训练 听力考试要求考生在很短的时间内记住听到的

重要信息,这需要很强的短期记忆能力。为加强短期记忆,考生可掌握一些速记的方法。比如利用缩略词、符号、首字母等记下重要的数字、时间、地点、中心词等。

Page 34: Model 1 Project 6. Learning Objective ☆ To be able to understand the listening material and take notes. ☆ To be able to understand the main idea news

5. 最大化地获取信息 在听懂大意的基础上,抓住所听内容的主旨与有关细节,同时利用在预读中得到的潜在信息,并用自己熟悉的形式把关键信息、数字等迅速记录下来。做到耳眼并用,一边听录音信息,一边浏览书面信息,边听边分析整理。采取抓信息词,抓关键词,采用预测法,排除法等等一切手段进行判断和选择。
