What is Mock Trial? The undergraduate mock trial program originated in 1985 at Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. Its purpose is to give undergraduate students an opportunity to learn first hand about the work of trial attorneys, understand the judicial system, develop critical thinking skills, and enhance communication skills. How does it work? One attorney from the Sioux City community serves as Morningside’s Mock Trial Team coach. The attorney/coach has extensive experience in trial law as well as experience with the mock trial system. The Mock Trial Team meets weekly to prepare a case and scrimmage for competition. For competitions, the Mock Trial Team educator-coach selects three members from the team to serve as attorneys and three to serve as witnesses. During competition, teams argue both sides of the case, with each team trying the case four times. What are the benefits of participation? • Have opportunities to compete against students from colleges and universities from across the country in local and regional tournaments • Develop critical thinking, leadership, and public speaking skills • Learn to work with and support others while improving your self confidence • Experience practical application of concepts learned in the classroom. Who can belong? The Mock Trial Team needs participants who have varied interests and experiences, regardless of their majors. Students can participate in the Mock Trial Team by enrolling in a two credit-hour class or by participating as club members, without the benefit of credit. Awards and Honors Jen Roemen, when a senior at Morningside, was recognized as a best attorney at the Great Midwest Regional Mock Trial Tournament. More than 20 teams competed in the tournament, coming from as far as Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana. Jen was one of only 10 students to be named a best attorney for defense. Jill Bohnker, when a Morningside senior, was recognized as a best attorney at the Creighton Mock Trial Invitational Tournament There were 23 teams competing at the mock trial tournament at Creighton University. They came from as far as Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. Jill was one of only 10 students to be named a best attorney. “Participating in Mock Trial taught me invaluable skills that I use every day on Capitol Hill. Mock Trial helped develop my communication skills by training me to think on my feet, work well under pressure and articulate the most complex arguments in a concise and effective manner. While participating in Mock Trial, I made friendships that will last a lifetime. The Morningside Mock Trial opened so many doors to new and exciting experiences like traveling to Los Angeles, St. Petersburg and New Haven. Some of my greatest memories involve competing in Mock Trial against Yale and staying up late with the rest of the team to strategize for the next round. I will never forget how much fun I had in Mock Trial.” - Casaday Loomis Served as Legislative Assistant, in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Steve King Mock Trial Team Critical thinking, leadership and public speaking skills CONTACT US Mock Trial Team Educator-Coach Office of Admissions Valerie M.
