Introduction to the

Akka SmartThe Akka Smart mobility platform enables children to move

safely and independently around their home and in their own

wheelchair or home seating system.

Operated via switches, the Akka Smart follows simple black

adhesive tape and introduces decision making by using the tape

to create branches and junctions. The user can reverse as well as

change direction by turning the platform around on the spot.

The beauty of the tape is that it is inexpensive and can be taken up

and new routes laid down simply and effectively. By following the

tape, the child and platform can avoid hazards and navigate internal

doorways.

“ The name Akka relates to a well known Scandinavian fairy tale in which a sad and lonely boy, whose only friends are the farm geese, dreams that he can shrink to a size where he can climb aboard a goose and join them on their adventures. One day his dream comes true and he flies away aboard Akka the wise goose to explore the fields and valleys. ”


The Akka Smart is a means of introducing movement and stimulus to profoundly disabled

children as well as providing a unique development system for children working towards

independence in an electric wheelchair.

The Akka Smart is designed to follow a line or circuit marked out on the floor surface with black

adhesive ‘route’ tape, similar in look and feel to standard electrical insulating tape. The Akka Smart

is guided along the black route tape using two cameras which are linked to an onboard computer.

This is an alternative or a progression from

Tape Driving and is aimed at children who have

developed more control, but who still require

protective boundaries to protect them from

potential hazards within the home or school.

This introduces full directional control (forward,

right, left and reverse).

This setting is designed for users with

greater spatial awareness and good control.

Free Driving is a great introduction to

independent wheelchair use.

Three ways you can use the Akka Smart

A. Simple - The Akka Smart goes

forward, stops, reverses and turns 360°

on the track.

B. Branching - This feature gives the user

a choice of which direction they would like

to go.


The Akka Smart enhances switching skills and brings great enjoyment as the user recognises the results of

their own actions.

1 Controls & Switches

Big LED Driving Button (forward only) - (AKC-AS15)

Red LED’s light up when the yellow button is pressed. Ideal for Tape Driving.

Programming Unit - (AKC-AS20)

For easy programming of speed and mode (assisted/straight/branching or boundary).

Switch Interface Box (4 Inputs)

You can use your own adaptive switches, buttons, or proximity sensors. These can be assigned to different directions of travel.

Wireless Bluetooth Joystick (all directions) - (AKC-AS05C)

This wireless Joystick allows for movement in all directions.

Green & Red Buttons (forward only) - (AKC-AS012/13)Green is for Go and Red is to Stop.

Joystick (all directions) - (AKC-AS05A)

The Joystick will allow movement forwards, backwards and side to side.

Compact Disc Player for sound effects with movement - (AKM-AS05)

By connecting this to the Akka Smart, sounds and music can accompany the user whilst they move.

Manfrotto Arm & Mounting Plate - (AKA-AS04)

This device clamps on to the users equipment to enable the mounting of switches.

Buggies, wheelchairs, standing frames or seating can be transferred to

the Akka Smart via a simple ramp that locates at the rear of the base.

Available for the Large (100kg) and Large Plus (130kg) Akka Smart mobility

platform, the ramp is supplied with four anchor straps to secure equipment

to the base.

When considering which size of Akka Smart is

most suitable it is important to remember that

weight limits reflect the combined weight of the

user and equipment.

* Our Width extension kit (AK6-AS02) increases the

width of the Akka Smart by another 8 cms.


Many of the products already in the Quest 88 portfolio are Akka Smart compatible.

The Akka Smart also offers the flexibility to attach other manufacturers’ equipment.

Each Akka Smart platform is supplied with management software* and a USB connection cable to enable you to customise speed

parameters and switch delays for individual users. By creating specific user profiles you can monitor the effectiveness of switch
