A police team reached the spot and found the vehicle abandoned. “A team led by K P Kukrety, ACP Vasant Vihar, started tracking the driver and the cleaner who were missing truck, Lallan had loaded the goods in- to another truck, which was driven to Khizrabad in south-east Delhi. He planned to sell the mobile phones to a dealer. A raid was conducted and Sunil Kumar and Shravan were arrested from the spot while Lallan managed to escape. The family had initially named 10 suspects, all of whom have been arrested. Sa- hista, police sources said, is the most important eyewit- ness in the case as she was the only family member on the first floor of the house other than Akhlaq and her brother Danish when the murderous mob stormed in, baying for Akhlaq’s blood because they believed he had slaughtered a cow and had beef. In her statement before the magistrate, Sahista also said the mob poured kerosene on the house’s walls, with the intention of burning it down, after dragging Akhlaq’s limp body down the stairs to the road outside, sources said. The Sentence Reviewing Board (SRB), chaired by the Del- hi home minister, Satyendar Ja- in, had received petitions from 50 life convicts, including Sharma, and decided to release 44 inmates. LG Najeeb Jung has given his nod to the SRB’s recommendations, a senior official said. In September this year, Sharma, a former youth Cong- ress leader who is in jail for the past 20 years, was released on parole by the Delhi high court. While granting him parole, the court had said till his plea see- king remission and premature release has been decided by the competent authority, he would remain out of jail. “The board has rejected four applications for premature rele- ase, including that of Sushil Ku- mar Sharma,” the official said, adding the SRB has deferred de- cision on two cases. Constituted in 2004, the SRB decides the pleas of convicts and other related issues. Representatives of Tihar jail and Delhi Police are members of the board. “Before taking the decision on premature release of life convicts, the board examines the records of those who have spent over 14 years in jail and whether they are still a threat to law and order,” the official said.
