Mobile Permaculture Project

Base Map
20 gal. trunk• holds up to 10 elements• use in regular booth situations 10' x 10' area• serves as storage for elements transported by
bckpack
Rucksack• holds up to 5 elements• small scale demonstrations• focused speeches
VISION/GOALSGOALHave demonstration elements of permaculture that can be carried in many different ways by different people. It must be mobile, best case scenario, by bike, reserving fossil fuels. It will have collapsible elements for ease of packing and setting up. Some elements will be scaled down versions of live elements.
VISIONI wanted to have a simple way to get the elements around and an easy way to store it. I believe that the water tight trunk is optimum for storage that is easy to move around. Instead of having live elements as in an initial plan heaviness is limited to the recycled materials stored in the box itself. I wanted to include elements that were interactive and informative.
SITE ANALYSIS
• school/classroom• small theater speaking• fold out table• mainly for transport, not
storage
• regular even booth, 10' x 10' square
• fold out table• stores more including
backpackIT DEPENDS ON...• space available to present• time available• the topic of focus• the type of interaction with groups

pioneers of mobile units:There are a number of inspirational, historical contexts for this kind of piece. Krzysztof Wodiczko's (MIT professor) nomadic design series is one. Another is by Paul Elkins. The following is a short list of the array of designs already at play in the fields of art, design, architecture, ecology, and their hybrids:

★we have included instructions for a bamboo bike cart. this cart could be modified so that it is also a push- cart, thus making it more flexible in use.
container/ transport element: bamboo cart
*bamboo is ideal because it can be reused, it is
renewable, readily available, and NOT a petroleum product!*
many of these items can be procured from builders
resource. bike wheels: $10.
basic bamboo cart holds about 200 lbs.
according to the designer nick lobnitz. smaller is
stronger
★various configurations of the cart can demonstrate various permaculture principles, such as zone, sector and pattern.

(this is a variation of the bamboo
cart)
★flexible sector utilization is essential. Since the mobile unit might be experiencing sun, wind and shade from any given direction, the unit needs to be able to respond in any number of configurations to the energies flowing into the unit.★SECTORS:★motion, varying speeds★attention★exhaust★light and dark
container/ transport element: cart
(sector demo)
★there are the zones within the cart itself (1), but also the cart is situated within the larger zonation of the user’s life (3 or 4)
★the cart will likely be stored in a storage space (zone 3 or 4), so the various elements, when not in use for the event, will need to be zoned accordingly.
(how the cart might demo
pattern)
We would like now to highlight some keyelements for your display.
Our choice of elements was based onsize, modularity, educational value, and ability to respond to unique sectors of
mobility.

The Green Map Was created in 2007 and is currently being
revised for a new print/ circulation. Last time, 3300 maps were donated to local schools,
teachers, libraries & universities. 550 were sold through stores like Modern Times Books and Real Foods. The map is sponsored by local
green & sustainable businesses.

Really, what is an educational booth without access to
all the amazing info we’ve been experiencing in this class???
Worm Bin—every permie booth needs one
Ken will donate starter worms!!
Will also need:• Newspaper• Either a wooden
wine box or re-used clear
Tupperware container
• Lots of food scraps
• Some H2O• A place to keep
them between shows (HVF?)
topo-map
demo element: water catchment
approx 3’approx 1 1/2’
the water catchment element catches water from the topographic map and pipes it to a bucket for a compost tea demo, a bottle for UV disinfectant demo, to thirsty plants underneath or a bladder for future use.
• plastic tray with holes (topo map fits on top)
• pipe channeling water from tray
• legs (sliding PVC pipes 1.5” & 1”)
• option 1: bladder/s
• option 2: 5 gal bucket
• option 3: plants
* many of these elements are available at builder’s
resources for around $1.005L bladder: $25.00
collection & assembly time:
estimated 4-6 hrs
demo element: water catchment
can use bamboo
instead of PVC!
workshop element:
seed bombsdemo element: compost tea
workshop element:
seed bombsthe compost tea demo can pump water from the water catchment. this demo can teach about oxygenation, soil building, and beneficial bacteria.
• solar panel
• piping
• 5 gal bucket
• pump
• power source from a solar panel or bike battery
• compost
demo element: compost tea
collection & assembly time:
estimated 1/2-1 hrs
note that unless this is a multi-day event, tea demo
is demo only
solar fountain kit: $50.00 or solar panel for
5 watt pump: $50.00
*the tea pump could optionally
pump water back over the
topographic map, that shows the San
Francisco watersheds*

Base Map, 10 x 10 Booth at EcoFaire or other street festival
the base map could be the city, the station, and the container...
★we see an opportunity for mobile permaculture units to connect nomadic, homeless, or otherwise mobile populations to larger urban gardens throughout the city of San Francisco.
★these units might provide special functions such as collecting compost & rainwater, starting seeds, or bringing other resources from one spot to another.
★it is a connecting element between a variety of locations, also holding many elements within itself.
container/ transport element: long term cart goals & vision
★can you make a cart that has a topo map and a table built in?
★specs for each event
★optimal materials for
building?
★layout of festival, weather, & variable sectors would determine layout of elements at site
★weight and sizes are variable
