Mobility = any formalism able to describe concurrent, distributed and
dynamically-reconfigurable systems.
2 Mobile Computing Platforms are moving computing away from the
desktop and towards the "Edge" - the terminal nodes of networks where
data transactions are executed from internet-enabled devices.
On the Edge - Mobilize Your Service
2 With mobile devices, once desk-bound workers are freed. They are
now able to receive and retrieve information while on the move.
With mobile solutions, companies have more options to restructure their
business processes to achieve greater efficiency.

Pioneering industries, such as hospitality, medical care, warehousing,
manufacturing automation and utility fields and transportation, have all
benefited from the convenience and efficiency of remote wireless devices,
real-time, on-site logistic support and service, remote control and monitoring, and immediate data access.

What is mobile computer?
You should be able to use same software, which you use on a desktop computer.
A computer which you can take with you all
around.
You can do all the things which can be done
with a desktop computer.

Mobile computer - How?
One possibility is to have a standalone computer
capable of
storing large amount of software and data files.
processing power to support the required applications.
Modern day laptop computer are something like this.

Mobile computing requires:Mobile computing requires:
Wireless new to support outdoor mobility and handoff from
one n/w to the next at a pedes- trian or vehicular speed.
Traveller in car using laptop connected with a GSM phone -
engaged in mobile computing.
Ubiquitous computing or pervasive computing refers to access
to computer network all the time at any location by any person.
Ubiquitous computing can not be realized unless mobilecomputing matures.

Option for connectivity
An easy option
Use cellular mobile phone network to connect to some
Internet Service Provider and hence to internet.
What you need - cellular phone/ corresponding modem.
Not a good option for campus wide mobile network.
dependent on the mobile telephone network operator
cheaper wireless LAN options available

Other extreme of mobile computer:
Mobile computing device acts as a terminal
Mobile computing device acts as remote terminal.
have wireless connectivity to the networkWhatever command or application you run is executed on a
remote server.

Advantages of this extreme:
Very small, compact and light weight mobile computer.
Providing wider reach.
Reducing time.

Higher reliability of data - theft of standalone computer means
everything is lost. But here all information is stored on some staticserver.
Less power consumption and large battery life - this
may not be true, if radio communication requires more
power than to power up all necessary devices for a
standalone computer on average basis.

Disadvantagesofthisextreme:
Small screens of most devices still limit types of file and data transfer
(i.e. streaming videos, etc.)
User interface is often difficult to learn how to use
limited bandwidth.
Limited roll out of higher bandwidth mobile networks and devices (i.e.
3g networks and wireless broadband networks are predominantly located
in cities)
Technology constraints of mobile devices (memory, processing power,
display capabilities, input methods)

Portability:
Minimize power consumption - larger battery life, smaller battery size - lesser weight
Smaller user interface - handwriting, voice recognition, pens, virtual reality screens.
Small storage capacity - Compressed file systems

The field of mobile data communications, rapidly improves and, as
shown above, trends are very much towards ubiquitous or mobile
computing.

Summary
Mobile computing systems have different constraints andhence different solutions. Main challenges are due to:
Wireless - unreliable.
Mobility - dynamism of information.
Portability - limited resources
