Principal’s Message It is with pleasure that I present the annual School Report for Mobile Central High 2011-2012. This report outlines the current profile of our school and provides information about staffing, population trends, provincial testing, and special school functions. This year was the final year of our current School Development Plan. We continued to make progress in our school goals, to improve student achievement and to make our school a healthier, safer and caring one. Students’ academic program was strongly supported by the school’s Guidance Counselor and the Special Services team. During the 2012-2013 school year our school will go through our second school development process. We will conduct an internal review of our school to help shape our plans for the next 3 to 4 years. An external review, by our peers, will also be conducted to gather further data to help guide our plan. We continued to work with our academically at risk students to help them achieve to the best of their ability. This process provided consultation between school and home to help our students reach their potential. This year saw further building of a positive, school-community relationship. Our teachers and volunteers continue to provide our students with a very enriching co-curricular and extra-curricular program allowing students to showcase their talents and reach their goals. I am pleased to report that all staff supports the co-curricular programs as a compliment to our academic efforts. On behalf of the Administrative team, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the school development team, and the entire staff for the time and effort they have given to this process in order to provide a quality education for our students. Please take the time to read over this report. We are committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities for our students. Your continued support and involvement will assist us greatly in this regard. Thank you for your supporting us in the education of your children. Dave Locke, B.A., B.ED., M.ED Principal

School Council Message Changes and challenges are taking place every day in society. Everyday we witness changes such as technological, multi-media, and communication advances. These changes are very evident when we look at our school system. As Ruby Hoskins, President of School Councils in Newfoundland stated in her presidents message (Sept,2012 The Cuffer) “School Councils are a valuable and vital part …of the education system…. They are a dedicated group of volunteers, ready to assemble and take on challenges and issues, as it relates to individual schools, a champion a cause to make school better for all its students” “ All stakeholders in education have a shared commitment to provide all students with a quality education and the skills and resources to fulfill their dreams.” School Councils play an integral role in working with the school to make it the best it can be to ensure that we have the necessary resources to ensure that ALL students succeed. As I indicated in last years report I have been involved as a parent representative, and now chair of the Mobile Central High School ( MCHS) school council. The school council is a legally constituted body that provides the opportunity for me to work collaboratively with the principal, other parents, teachers, community representatives and students to enhance the quality of school programs and increase the levels of student achievement. I strongly encourage individuals to become involved in their school council and become an active participant in the local school and children’s education The School Council as it operated in the 2011-2012 school year had 10 members and met for eight meetings. The school council was challenged with a change in administration part way through the school year but quickly adjusted and had a very successful year. Highlights worth mentioning from this year is the tireless work that the liaison school council representatives play with the High School pre-graduation preparation. Thank you has to go out to Mrs. Debbie Williams for another successful year. This is Debbie’s last year on school council and her involvement will be greatly missed. The council also had significant involvement with the Awards Night and the grade 12 Graduation ceremony. Feedback from all involved with the cap and gown ceremony and the school ceremony indicated the decision to separate these awards was a good decision that highlighted the graduating class in a special and memorable way and supported the academic achievements of the rest of the school in a positive manner. The school council also had a joint meeting with the St. Bernard’s school council to discuss concerns regarding growing enrollment. A subcommittee was struck to specifically look at the issue and they met in June, 2012.

Once again it was a busy and productive school year. As a parent who has been involved with school council I can say that I find involvement in school council a rewarding experience. We all have a role to play in our children’s education and we all need to be involved. I strongly advocate that parents, community leaders, students and school staff become involved in council. All stakeholders have a role in making schools the best place for all students to succeed. School Council Membership 2011-2012 On behalf of your School Council I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff, students, and school community for their continued support. As a school council we will continue to work with the school and the District to develop and encourage all students to be the best they can be in a supportive and respectful environment. Our School Community Mobile Central High School is located on the scenic Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The school has 230 students from grades 7 to 12. The total population of the area served by the school is approximately 3500, spread out in the two larger communities of Bay Bulls and Witless Bay, and in five smaller communities consisting of Mobile, Tors Cove, Burnt Cove, St. Michael’s and Bauline. Mobile High School is under the jurisdiction of the Eastern School District.

Mobile High School has a total of 17 full time and part time staff which includes Administration, Categorical and Non-Categorical Special Education Teachers, as well as classroom teachers and specialist teachers in the areas of guidance, music, physical education, technology and learning resources. We also have 2 student assistants. Programs Provided Mobile Central High school offers the provincially prescribed curriculum in grades 7 to grade 12. We offer a rich program of arts to our students. Our Music programs consist of junior and senior choir, junior and senior guitar, a rock band and guitar club. Our Art club provided many of our students the opportunity to demonstrate their drawing and painting talents. Our students also have access to drama, improv, public speaking and media production. In addition to the academics and arts we also provide an excellent athletic program to our students. This program allows students to participate in many in-house and varsity activities. We have both male and female teams in the junior and senior divisions in a wide variety of sports. Key Highlights/Special Projects Partnerships It is abundantly clear that academic excellence can only be achieved through mutual cooperation between home, school and community. As part of our Mobile School Development Plan, we have identified a host of individuals, families and small and large business owners willing to assist the school financially through direct donations to the Mobile High School Scholarship Fund. Our Awards Night and Graduation Ceremony has grown exponentially to include nearly one hundred individual scholarships that are awarded to students from grade 7 to grade 12.

School Development Plan for Current Year School Development Plan 2012-13 During the 2012-13 school year the staff of Mobile Central High will continue with its initiatives from the 2011-12 school year. These initiatives will focus on the following goals: 1. To continue to promote a safe, caring, healthy, active, learning environment 2. To continue to improve student achievement

However, since the 2012-13 school year is the first year for a new School Development phase, the primary focus for the staff and its School Development Leadership team will be to engage in both an internal and external review. Once this process is completed, in the Spring of 2013, a 3 to 4 year plan will be developed that will commence in September of 2013 and take the school through the next 3 to 4 years.

We also used some of the funding and our operational budget to replace some of our older projectors in our classrooms. We also purchased new sewing machines for our grade 9 home economics program.
