Mobile and Terrestrial Propagation TG

Formed in Oct 96 by merging two TWPs:– Mobile Radio

– Diffraction, Scatter and other Terrain Effects

Membership– 61 representatives from 36 organisations

– good industry/academia/government balance

TG Meetings

4 meetings a year– average attendance: 23

Meeting framework– Progress reports from members

– Liaison with related groups

– Regular technical presentations» by members and invited speakers

– Special issues

Mobile and Terrestrial TGTerms of Reference

Open to organisations who support the interchange of pre-competitive results

Covers the fields of mobile and terrestrial radiowave propagation mechanisms, particularly diffraction and scatter

Topics include– area coverage, macro-, micro-, pico-cell and indoor– effects of ground cover (inc. vegetation)– wideband channel characterisation– system- and antenna-related issues– terrain, ground-cover and measurements databases

Previous Special Issues

Collation and maintenance of measurements results database– CD-ROM containing 50,000 measurement results and path

profiles available to members

Terrain and 3D building databases– TG developed a common specification for 3D street-level building

databases for data suppliers and users

This Year’s Special Issues

Two working parties of the Mobile and Terrestrial TG reported on requirements for propagation data and model development:– BFWA (Mike Willis)

– 3G (Simon Saunders/Sana Salous)

Report on “Strategic research requirements for Broadband Fixed Wireless Access” sent to RRAC

Project proposal on “Benchmarks for high-resolution mobile radio wave propagation models” submitted to RA for possible funding– rejected (too near market, too general)

Future

TG regarded as a good forum for exchange of ideas and collaborative opportunities between researchers– open to all– wide range of propagation interests

Proposal to find new focus by replacing TG by new TGs on Mobile and FWA– membership evenly split on status quo or new TGs

New chairperson to be appointed Are new ToR required? Concentrate on

– topics of interest to members / topics of interest to RA ?– enabling research
