We would like to welcome you to the 2017 Strings and

Things Festival. Due to the success of last year’s Festival

we decided, as a committee, to continue it in 2017. It

would not work without the support of so many people in

the village who have organised and supported our fund

raisers. We hope you enjoy our programme for this year.

There is an old Irish saying “Ar scath á chéile a mhaireann

na daoine” which means people live in each other’s

shadows or that we depend on each other. We hope that

this festival will be an opportunity for neighbours and

friends to celebrate all that’s good about our village and

that you will come and join us in that celebration.

Robert Flaherty’s lost Irish Gaelic fi lm found at HarvardDocumentary pioneer Robert Flaherty directed the fi rst fi lm made in the

Irish language, Oidhche Sheanchais (“A Night of Storytelling”) in 1935

during the production of his now classic fi lm Man of Aran.

Cited in nearly every history of Irish cinema, this short (11 minute) fi lm

has been missing, believed lost, since a fi re destroyed the only known

copies in 1943. A nitrate print of the fi lm, purchased by the Harvard

College Library in 1935 at the request of Harvard’s Department of Celtic

Languages and Literatures, was rediscovered by Houghton Library

curators during a cataloging update in 2012.

Oidhche Sheanchais, a fascinating distillation of Flaherty’s belief in

cinema as a kind of folkloric art, depicts a typical Irish hearth, where

the main cast members of Man of Aran sit, listening to an ancient tale

told by famed Seanchaí (storyteller) Seáinín Tom Ó Dioráin. Oidhche

Sheanchais is Flaherty’s fi rst work in direct sound and the fi rst “talkie” in

Irish Gaelic. It was fi lmed in the same London studio where the Man of

Aran cast had already gathered for the recording of post-synch sound.
