Traits

MOANA The clever and spirited daughter of the Chief, MOANA (Mo-AH-nah) is determined to be true to herself. She bravely faces challenges head-on and tries to be a leader her people will proudly follow.

Compassionate MOANA has a kind heart and caring nature. Always considerate of how others feel, she is quick to offer praise and support when someone needs a boost. Whether she’s helping a baby turtle make its way to the sea, showing MAUI (MOW-ee) there is more to him than a magical fishhook, or seeing the good inside a fiery lava monster, MOANA is a true friend.

Tenacious Like her dad, MOANA is proud and stubborn. She loves having a connection to the ocean, even though it sets her apart from the rest of her people. MOANA needs to understand why the ocean chose her to restore the heart of Te Fiti (Teh FEE-tee), and to figure out who she really is. She firmly believes following the voice inside will help her save the world, and she’s determined to see her journey through – even if it means breaking the rules and risking everything along the way.

Intelligent MOANA doesn’t accept that life on the island is all there is. She knows her connection to the ocean means something, and that her people were meant for much more. MOANA is smart and resourceful, and she cleverly overcomes each obstacle she faces – proving herself a wise and worthy leader.

Optimistic No matter how impossible things may seem, MOANA is unfailingly hopeful and confident. She tackles challenges with enthusiasm and pushes herself past any doubts that creep in. MOANA trusts her instincts and doesn’t give up if things start to go wrong. She’s sure she can succeed somehow.

Daring MOANA bravely embarks on adventures, not worrying about the dangers involved. From entering the legendary realm of monsters, to standing up to Te Ka (Teh KAH) on her own, MOANA isn’t afraid to take big risks. She may need a moment to encourage herself, but she never backs down from a challenge.

Character Synopsis MOANA was always drawn to the ocean. The water seemed to beckon her, calling her to leave the shelter of the village and play along the shore. She considered the ocean a friend, but she had no idea the ocean saw something special in her. After recognizing MOANA’s compassionate nature when she was just a little girl, the ocean knew she was the person who would one day save the world.

As MOANA grew her connection to the ocean deepened. She never really understood it, but she couldn’t ignore it. Everything seemed to lead her to the water. MOANA wanted desperately to be the perfect daughter and become a great ruler for her people, but no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t deny her longing for something beyond the village – even beyond the reef. It felt like she was being forced into an identity that was unfamiliar and wrong for her.

When MOANA learned the truth of her ancestors everything suddenly made sense. Her connection to the ocean was in her blood – she was a voyager, not meant to be tied down on an island her whole life. Suddenly MOANA saw a future she never thought possible, but she was also faced with the overwhelming decision of breaking the rules and disobeying her father.

It was Gramma Tala’s encouragement that helped MOANA take a chance and follow the voice inside. It was up to her to save her people – she had to at least try. When she finally broke through the barrier of the reef, MOANA felt a freedom she had never known before. She also felt comforted knowing she was in the company of her friend, the ocean. It wouldn’t steer her wrong.

MOANA knew the most difficult part of her journey would be convincing MAUI to join her, and she refused to back down. She didn’t care how big, magical, or important he was – she was going to make him help. When MOANA realized it was up to her to restore the heart after all, she rose to the challenge. She knew her ancestors were behind her, and her people were counting on her.

It was because of MOANA’s compassion and intuition that she was able to get through to Te Ka, uncovering the true soul within the anguished lava monster. MOANA understood better than anyone how it felt to not know who you truly were. By reminding Te Ka that there was more to her than what she had become, and that she wasn’t defined by what happened to her, MOANA helped Te Ka find her true self – just as MOANA had finally done.

Saving the world has not changed who MOANA is inside; it simply made it possible for her to finally be herself. She has restored her people to their true calling, making them ocean voyagers once more. MOANA now guides her people as master wayfinder with courage, wisdom, and love.

Supporting Roles & Relationships

Maui

Warrior, trickster, shape-shifter, demigod of the wind and sea, and hero to all, MAUI (MOW-ee) is the first and greatest wayfinder. To MOANA, MAUI was simply part of the plan – she had to find him to save her people. When she got to know him better MOANA realized he wasn’t a bad guy; he had simply made a mistake. MOANA helped MAUI discover that his hook and powers didn’t make him who he was – he was already special. In return, MAUI taught MOANA to be a master wayfinder and helped her restore the heart of Te Fiti, proving himself a true hero after all. Now MOANA considers MAUI a friend and she’s happy to cross paths with him on her voyages.

Mini-Maui

MOANA was surprised at first to see a tattoo with a mind of its own, but she likes Mini-Maui – he tends to agree with her point of view and she appreciates his help when MAUI is being impossible.

The Ocean

MOANA trusts the ocean – she knows it will always be there for her. Even though her relationship with the ocean is different than most, she doesn’t care. MOANA couldn’t imagine having a better friend in her new role as master wayfinder for her people.

Gramma Tala

MOANA has a special connection to Gramma Tala (TAH-lah). They are kindred spirits – both love the ocean and consider it a friend, and both are different than everyone else in the village. MOANA knows Tala will be with her wherever she goes, guiding her as she follows her own path and helping her along the way.

Performer Note: MOANA calls her “Gramma Tala” or “my gramma.”

Chief Tui

MOANA is a lot like her dad, Chief Tui (TOO-ee). They’re both proud, stubborn, and not easily swayed. She knows he only wanted what was best for her when he encouraged her to stay on the island, and that he secretly shared her love of the sea once, too. Now MOANA is proud to follow in her father’s footsteps and she continues to learn how to be a great chief from his example.

Performer Note: MOANA calls him “my dad.”

Sina

MOANA’s mother, Sina (SEE-nah), has always encouraged MOANA, even when it meant going against the Chief and helping MOANA follow her own path. Having her mom’s support means everything to MOANA. She appreciates that Sina tries to see things from her perspective and lets MOANA make her own decisions.

Performer Note: MOANA calls her “my mom.”

Heihei

Even though Heihei (HEY-hey) can be silly and a little troublesome, he proved himself helpful to MOANA. She’s grateful to have him as a friend, but she keeps an eye on him and tries not to get frustrated when he unwittingly causes problems for her.

Pua

MOANA loves Pua (POO-ah) and considers him her best friend. She takes time to play with him on the shore of Motunui (Mo-two-NEW-ee), and she’s happy to have him by her side now when she voyages.

Te Fiti

MOANA risked everything to take the heart to Te Fiti (Teh FEE-tee). When Te Fiti was restored, MOANA was in awe of her beauty and power. She respects Te Fiti and is grateful each day to see her beautiful gift in the islands around her.

Te Ka

MOANA wasn’t afraid of Te Ka (Teh-KAH). She knew she had to find a way to restore the heart and save her people, even if it meant facing the lava monster head-on. MOANA understood Te Ka’s struggle – she had forgotten who she truly was. MOANA gently encouraged Te Ka, teaching her a lesson MOANA had learned herself: she could choose to be who she truly was inside.

Matai Vasa and the Ancestors

MOANA is strongly connected to her ancestors, and she is proud to wear the necklace passed down from her first ancestor, Matai Vasa (Mah-TIE VAH-sah). MOANA felt them with her on her journey, encouraging her and reminding her of who she truly is inside. She still feels their presence when she sets out on new voyages.

Kakamora

MOANA was shocked when the Kakamora (Kah-kah-MORE-ah) turned out to be vicious, but once she told herself they were just coconuts she had no problem fighting back against the tiny pirates. Even though she knows how to handle them, she hopes she doesn’t ever run into them again.

Tamatoa

MOANA was relieved it was easy to distract the giant scavenger Tamatoa (Tah-mah-TOE-ah) by boosting his ego. She was worried for a minute that the crab might actually eat her, but now she knows he’s no match for MAUI and her when they work together.

Locations

Motunui

MOANA loves her island home, Motunui (Mo-two-NEW-ee). She grew up exploring its forests and dancing with Gramma Tala along the shoreline, and she never tired of the view of her friend, the ocean. MOANA feels a strong connection to her home and a strong sense of pride in it – especially now that she has helped her people remember who they are.

The Village

MOANA knew from a young age she wasn’t content to just stay in the village. She felt something was missing in the simple daily lives of her people – something to do with the ocean. Since MOANA has restored her people to their true calling – ocean voyaging – she appreciates the village even more. It’s a comfort to return there after a long journey and she is proud to lead the people who make it feel like home.

Ceremonial Clearing

MOANA was first introduced to the clearing by her father. She was awed by the beauty and tradition of it – being there helped her truly understand her role in the village and her connection with past leaders who placed their stone on the pile to take their place as chief. Since restoring the heart of Te Fiti, MOANA has added her conch shell to the top of the stones and she continues to learn from her father how to be a great chief.

Cavern of the Ancestors

MOANA was intrigued by Gramma Tala’s insistence that she go in the cavern and bang the drum – what answer would it hold for her? How would she discover who she is meant to be in a dark cave? She could hardly believe it when she banged the drum and saw the secret past of her ancestors. The cavern unlocked the mystery of MOANA’s connection to the ocean. The boats have since been removed from the cavern and put back in the water where they belong so their people can be voyagers again.

Maui’s Island

MOANA is proud of herself for reaching the tiny island where MAUI was marooned when she had never sailed before. She’s grateful to the ocean for helping her find it, but she didn’t appreciate MAUI trying to seal her in a cave and steal her boat.

Lalotai – Realm of Monsters

MOANA didn’t exactly enjoy her visit to Lalotai (La-lo-TIE) – the realm of monsters. When she dropped through the entrance after MAUI she landed in the mouth of a monster and was only saved when an even bigger monster ate it and she fell to the ground. She still can’t believe she was in a place that was a legend to her people, or that they managed to escape. MOANA hopes she doesn’t ever have to go back there.

Tamatoa’s Lair

MOANA was shocked by Tamatoa’s collection – she had never seen so many treasures and shiny things before. After meeting Tamatoa she knows they were lucky to get out of there with the hook.

Fundamental Elements of the Story Below are themes, ideas, and components from the story that are important to the Character.

Wayfinding

MOANA’s ancestors were constantly moving and exploring. They practiced ”wayfinding:” navigating the ocean by seeing where you’re going in your mind, and knowing where you are by knowing where you’ve been. The master wayfinder, or navigator, is the person who leads the way. By reading the stars, monitoring the current, and expertly sailing their canoes, ocean voyagers can travel great distances, discover new shores, and still find their way back home.

Always drawn to the ocean, MOANA knew there was something more beyond life on the island, past the reef. With MAUI’s help she worked hard to become a master wayfinder and has restored her people to their rightful calling as ocean voyagers. MOANA now proudly leads them on journeys to unknown lands, trusting the ocean to have her back and knowing she can always find her way home again.

Finding Your Identity

MOANA never felt content with life in the village. She knew she was supposed to take her place as chief and be happy to stay on the island, never venturing into unknown dangers beyond. No matter how hard she tried to accept her role she didn’t feel comfortable with it. MOANA was being forced into an identity that didn’t fit, and she couldn’t deny the voice inside telling her there was more out there for her. With Gramma Tala’s help MOANA bravely followed her heart and listened to the voice instead of silencing it. She discovered her true identity as a master wayfinder, saved the world, and introduced her people to their true way of life. Finding herself and embracing her identity has made MOANA a strong, happy young woman and a confident leader of her people.

Saving the World

When MOANA set out to restore the heart of Te Fiti she knew how high the stakes were. The world was slowly being consumed by darkness and life would soon be destroyed. The ocean chose her for a reason, knowing she could succeed, so MOANA was determined to come through. In her journey MOANA didn’t focus on the fact that she was saving the world. At first she thought that was MAUI’s part to play and she encouraged him, promising he would be everyone’s hero. But when the time came for MOANA to step up and save the world herself, she never considered herself a hero. She was simply doing what had to be done to save her people and restore Te Fiti.

Pacific Island Cultures

MOANA comes from a place steeped in traditions that go back thousands of years. The people of Oceania – or the Pacific – see the ocean as a uniting force that brings their islands together. MOANA’s ancestors traveled the ocean in search of new lands, and their culture shared similarities to people who inhabited islands around them while still remaining unique to them.

Performer Note: Although MOANA comes from an area that is sometimes called the South Pacific or Pan-Pacific, she would not use these names. Instead of labeling the area, she would simply describe her home and the islands around it.

Topics to Avoid The topics below may not be appropriate to use while portraying this Character.

PERFORMANCE MOTIVATION

Relationship to the Disney Environment

Relationship to Guests

Other Versions of the Story

While various stories about MOANA’s adventures exist, MOANA would be unaware of other people and events mentioned in them. If a Guest makes a comment about another version of her story, MOANA might think it’s interesting but would relate it back to her life.

Gods and Religion

MAUI was made a demigod when his parents cast him away. The gods found him and gave him a magical fishhook, bestowing on him powers unknown to mortals. Other than their role in helping MAUI, MOANA would not discuss their gods or her religious beliefs. If questioned by a Guest she would simply explain how MAUI became a demigod and focus on the things he has accomplished rather than his half-human, half-god status.

Tattoos

Although MAUI is covered in tattoos that detail events of his life, MOANA would not encourage Guests to get similar markings or inquire about their tattoos. If a Guest with a tattoo reminds her of MAUI, she may focus the conversation on his tattoos by telling them about Mini-Maui, rather than the Guest’s. (See Vocal Animation)

MOANA is confident and proud – she knows who she is and where she belongs. She leads by example, guiding her people with courage, determination, and a positive outlook. MOANA strives to be a great leader, daughter, and friend, and she knows she can only succeed by being true to herself.

MOANA loves to venture far beyond her island home and she is eager to see as much of the world as possible, having spent so much time in the shelter of her own island. She may have traveled here in search of new places to explore or hoping to discover new shores. MOANA enjoys learning about different cultures and she is happy to share hers with those she encounters in her travels.

MOANA is excited to meet people and spend time with friends. She is warm and welcoming to everyone and is simply herself no matter who she sees. MOANA is eager to share stories of her journeys and encourages Guests to explore the world, knowing how fulfilling those voyages can be.

Children

To MOANA, children are fun and always up for anything. She loves listening to their stories and telling some of her own, knowing they’ll be amazed by some of the crazy things she’s seen. MOANA encourages young Guests to play and explore. She’s happy to join them in being silly now and then by impersonating MAUI’s voice, or re-enacting the way she cheers him on with an exuberant, “Maui! Maui! You’re so amazing!”

Teenagers

With teenagers MOANA feels right at home. She knows what it’s like to figure out who you are and where you fit in the world, and to want to please everyone while still just being yourself. MOANA talks freely with them, sharing stories of her voyage with MAUI and learning to be a wayfinder, and she hopes they will follow their hearts and pursue adventures of their own.

Adults

MOANA treats adults with kindness and respect. She’s seen a lot of the world, but knowing there is still so much to learn MOANA is eager to listen to any stories or advice they might share. MOANA loves to hear about other cultures and places, and she happily tells Guests what it’s like to live in Motunui, be an ocean voyager, or have a demigod as a friend.

Large Groups/Families

MOANA is comfortable in large groups – the people of her village are family to her. She might be curious to know who the navigator of the group is or where their explorations have taken them. MOANA might tell the Guests about her travels to the realm of monsters or ask them if they have any animals like Heihei or Pua. She loves finding out how much they have in common, no matter how different their backgrounds may be.

Couples

Although MOANA doesn’t have much time for romance, she’s happy to see couples having fun together. They might remind MOANA of her parents, who have always set a strong example for her. MOANA may ask a couple if they are in charge of their village back home, or describe the way her mom and dad balance each other – especially when it comes to helping her.

Greetings

To any Guest

“Hey! Did you wayfind to get here?”

“Hi! The ocean must have brought you here today!”

“Wow, it’s so great to see another voyager!”

To a shy or nervous Guest

“You know, I wasn’t so sure the first time I went past the reef. I didn’t know if I could really do it…save the world and all. But you know what? The ocean was there with me, so it was okay. It’s always nice to have a friend around. I hope we can be friends, too!”

“Hmm…I wonder if you’ve seen Heihei anywhere. He has a habit of stowing away on my boat when I voyage. If you see a funny little rooster trying to eat rocks, let me know! He can be a handful, but he’s a great friend.”

Introducing yourself

“Hey! I’m Moana. It’s so great to see you!”

“Hi! I’m Moana, of Motunui.”

Introducing Maui

“Do you know Maui? He’s only the greatest demigod around. With his magical fishhook he slowed down the sun, pulled islands out of the sea, battled monsters…and helped me restore the heart of Te Fiti. Pretty impressive, huh?”

“This is Maui! He’s a pretty big deal…at least he thinks so, right Maui?” (said playfully)

“This…is Maui. Warrior, shape-shifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero to all. He’s kind of a big deal.”

Expressions & Reactions

To a compliment

“Wow, thank you!”

“Aw, that’s so sweet.”

To someone saying, “I love you.”

“Wow, thanks! I love you, too.”

To a crying Guest

“Uh…did you just come from Lalotai? ‘Cause I get it. That place is not easy to get over!”

“It’s too bad Pua isn’t here. A hug from him always makes me feel better! What about a hug from me instead?”

To a teenager

“Have you ever thought about wayfinding? You should try it sometime. You get to travel the ocean and still find your way home when you’re ready. It’s pretty great.”

“Which one of you is the master wayfinder? Being the navigator is a big responsibility, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. I love taking my family on voyages!”

To an adult

“You’ll have to keep an eye out for Maui in your travels. He’s a shape-shifter, so you never know what to expect from him. He can be pretty tricky!”

To couples

“Are you in charge of your village, too? I’ve learned so much watching my parents work together to lead our village. They kinda balance each other, you know?”

To a Guest dressed as a princess

“Wow, a princess! You must have some impressive ancestors. My people were voyagers…that’s why I’ve always loved the ocean. It’s part of me.”

“You sparkle like the ocean when the sun sets! It’s one of my favorite things to see. I can’t wait to tell the people in my village about you!”

To a Guest dressed as Moana

“Uh…we’re kinda the same! Heihei would be so confused if he could see us! Well, he’s confused most of the time. But still. It would be fun!”

“You must be a master wayfinder, just like me! Did Maui teach you, too? It’s pretty amazing to learn from the best. But don’t tell him I said that…he already thinks he’s a big deal.”

To a Guest with their face painted

“You’ve got your warrior paint on! You aren’t expecting to run into the Kakamora, are you? Those little coconuts are big trouble!”

To a Guest dressed as a pirate

“Wow, you’re an ocean voyager, too! If you come across anything shiny, make sure you keep it away from Tamatoa. That crab tries to get his claws on anything that sparkles!”

To a Guest with a tattoo

“Have you ever seen Maui’s tattoos? They show the amazing things he’s done…and a few not-so-amazing ones. My favorite is his Mini-Maui. He’s got a mind of his own, and he usually sides with me when Maui’s being difficult!”

To a Guest asking for an autograph

“Wow…okay!”

“Sure!”

Questions & Possible Answers Below are statements or questions that could be asked by Guests, with examples of appropriate reactions. Questions can be answered by creatively using the story.

Closing Comments

“See you out there!”

“Go save the world! You know…if it ever needs saving.”

“Have fun on your next voyage! I’ll tell the ocean ‘hi’ for you. Byyye!”

Performer Note: In MOANA’s culture it is not customary to say, “Goodbye.”

Reasons for Leaving

“I’ve gotta go prepare for a long voyage. We’re hoping to find a new island…wish me luck!”

“I promised my parents I’d be back to make the rounds in the village. I still have a lot to learn about being chief, but I kinda love it!”

“I’m gonna go check on Heihei. I never know what kind of trouble he’ll get into next!”

Where is…

Maui?

“I haven’t seen him in a while, but he might be pulling islands out of the sea, or battling monsters! Or shape-shifting. He’s really good at that.”

Pua?

“He’s back in the village. I took him for a long ocean voyage and he was so excited the whole time he barely slept! I’m sure he’s been napping all day.”

Heihei?

“Oh, he’s…whaaa? Heihei? HEIHEI! Well, I thought he was here. Who knows where he wandered off to this time. Hopefully he headed back to the boat.”

Gramma Tala?

“She’s always with me, especially when I’m out on the ocean. She loves it just as much as I do.”

Te Fiti?

“Right where she belongs – bringing new life to the world. Doesn’t everything she’s done look beautiful?”

Your parents?

“They’re back in the village preparing for our next voyage. They love sailing now, just like me!”

Questions

Who are you/What’s your name?

“I am Moana of Motunui. I sailed across the sea and restored the heart of Te Fiti. Now I’m a master wayfinder.”

“I am Moana of Motunui. My father is Chief Tui, and his father was the chief before him. We come from a long line of ocean voyagers. My first ancestor was Matai Vasa. He was a master wayfinder like me!”

Where are you from/Where do you live?

“I’m from Motunui. It’s a small island in the Pacific that my ancestors settled on a long time ago. But I spend a lot of my time on the ocean. My people are voyagers!”

How are you?

“I’m great! I just had the best voyage here. I didn’t run into any storms, or the Kakamora! That’s always a relief.”

How old are you?

“Old enough to be the master wayfinder for my people! It feels pretty amazing to follow in the footsteps of my ancestors. I hope I can make them proud.”

Do you have a mom/dad?

“Yup! They’re back in the village with my pet pig, Pua. They’re keeping an eye on him while I’m gone.”

Is your hair real?

“Yup. Sometimes I have to pull it up when I’m out sailing. It can get pretty windy on the water!”

Are you the same one I saw yesterday?

“I am! I love voyaging here whenever I can.”

What’s your last name?

“I just go by Moana. Although sometimes Maui calls me ‘the Chosen One.’ He can be kinda impossible, but you gotta love him.”

Are you married?/Do you have a boyfriend?

“Uh…no. Being a wayfinder for my people keeps me pretty busy!”

Are you a princess?

“No, I’m the daughter of the Chief. Well, actually, I’m learning how to be a chief, too. There’s been a lot happening lately!”

How did you find Maui?

“I just followed the stars…and got a little help from the ocean. My ancestors believed he was on an island at the bottom of a constellation that looked like his fishhook. They were right!”

Why are you wearing shoes/sandals?

“It’s easier to explore different lands with sandals on! Not everywhere is soft and sandy like Motunui."

Why did Maui steal the heart?

“Well, he was trying to get everyone to love him. It just kinda backfired. But he helped me restore the heart to Te Fiti, which makes him a pretty big hero.”

Are you from Hawaii?/Are you Hawaiian?/What’s your ethnicity?

“I’m from an island called Motunui. It’s beautiful there! I love spending time on the shore, dancing with the waves.”

Are you the chief now?

“Um…not quite. My dad is still Chief. But I added my conch shell to the ancestors’ stones because I’m ready to follow in his footsteps. I have a lot to learn!”

Do you speak Hawaiian? (or any other language)

“No, I speak the language of my people on the island of Motunui. Do you want to know some words from Oceania?”

Performer Note: Teach the Guest a few of the following words:

Moana (Mo-AH-nah): means “ocean”

Tala (TAH-lah): means “talk” or to “talk story”

Motunui (Mo-too-NEW-ee): “Motu” means “island” and “nui” means “big”

Tui (TOO-ee): means “chief”

Pua (POO-ah): means “pig” and “flower”

Lalotai (La-loh-TIE): means “under the sea”

Is your grandmother a stingray?

“Gramma Tala has a special connection to manta rays. She even has a tattoo of one! I guess she chose right.”

Comments

I like your movie.

“You must know Maui! Do you remember when I first met him? I told him exactly what Gramma Tala said: ‘I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat, sail across the sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti.’ It…uh…didn’t exactly work. But I convinced him eventually!”

You’re my favorite.

“Me? Wow, thanks! Don’t tell Maui, though…he thinks he’s everyone’s favorite.”

It’s my birthday!

“Happy birthday! Did you go on a great voyage to celebrate? That’s how I like to spend special occasions…long journeys on the ocean. It’s a friend of mine, you know?”

I’m five. (or any age)

“That’s a really fun age! When I was your age, I loved playing with Pua and Heihei. I still do! They can be pretty silly, but they’re really great friends!”

General Conversation Incorporating elements of the story in conversation makes the Character real and helps bring Guests into their world.

I like your dress.

“Thanks! We make everything ourselves back in Motunui. We try to use everything we can. Like when we pick a coconut, we use the fibers to make nets, drink the water, use the leaves for fires, and eat the meat! Do you make things in your village?”

I was you for Halloween.

“No way. Really?! That’s amazing! I bet you looked just like me. Wait ‘til I tell Maui!”

I like your necklace.

“Thanks! My Gramma Tala gave it to me. It’s kind of a family tradition to pass it down.”

I like Maui’s tattoo of you.

“Wow, thanks! I still can’t believe that happened. I feel pretty honored!”

I thought you were lighter.

“I’ve been wayfinding a lot lately, so I’ve been in the sun a lot! Have you ever seen the way it bounces off the ocean? It’s amazing!”

I thought you were darker.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time in my village lately, so I haven’t been out in the sun as much. My dad is showing me how to be a great chief…I still have a lot to learn!”

To a young girl

“Have you ever been to the ocean? When I was your age I used to play with the waves. Well, I still kinda do. The ocean is a friend of mine! My Gramma Tala taught me how to dance along the shore, and the ocean would dance along with us. You should try it some time. I bet the ocean would love you, too!”

To a young boy

“I wonder if you’ve ever been sailing. It’s so much fun! My people are ocean voyagers. We get to travel all over looking for new islands and exploring different places! You should try it…you could learn to be a master wayfinder, just like me! Whaddya think?”

To any Guest

“Have you seen Maui in your travels? You know – warrior, trickster, shape-shifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men and women. I always thought he was sneaky, so I wasn’t too sure when I first met him. It turns out he really is a hero, and a great friend. Who woulda thought? But keep an eye out…he can still be kinda tricky sometimes.”

Performer Note: These are examples of how to carry a conversation with Guests when they do not respond. Whenever possible, it is important to include the Guest in the conversation and listen to what they have to say.

Pacific Island Terminology The following terms are used by people of Oceania and may be part of MOANA’s dialogue:

Tapa (TAH-pah): Cloth made from the bark of a tree that has been softened. The tapa could be dyed or decorated and used for various things, including depicting images that tell a story. MOANA learned the true story of her ancestors when she discovered the tapa sail of the voyaging ship in the cavern.

Fale (FAH-leh): A name for a simple house, hut, or building.

Hongi (HONG-ee): A traditional greeting in which people press their noses and foreheads together. In it, the breath of life is thought to be shared. When MOANA gave Te Ka a hongi, she helped Te Ka soften and relax for a moment. MOANA then restored the heart to her chest.

Performer Note: Although MOANA gives a hongi in the film to Gramma Tala, Te Ka, and Te Fiti, she would not greet Guests this way. Instead, she gives a hug or a hand clasp.

Haka (HAH-kah): A traditional war cry, dance, or challenge, the haka is performed several times by MAUI.

Performer Note: MOANA would not use the term “haka” in conversation because it means “war.” Instead, she says “warrior” (example: “warrior face,” “warrior dance,” “warrior cry”).

PHYSICAL ANIMATION The film animation does not always translate directly to live performance. The physical traits have been determined by studying the film animation as well as the Character’s personality.

Moana’s Physicality

Stance & Positions Feet

MOANA’s free-spirit and confidence shows in the way she carries herself. Her movements are natural and relaxed, and she openly shows her emotions in her varying facial expressions and shifts in posture.

MOANA stands with her feet shoulder-width apart and toes turned slightly out. When she’s especially proud or confident, she takes a wider stance and pushes forward from the chest (Picture A). If MOANA is feeling more casual she may stand with one foot facing forward and the other turned out, shifting her weight to one hip and relaxing her posture slightly (Picture B).

Occasionally MOANA stands with her feet staggered and toes facing forward or slightly turned out (Picture C). If she’s surprised by something she may shift her weight and lean back slightly, bending her knees and taking a step so both feet are shoulder-width apart with toes facing forward (Picture D).

Arms

MOANA often stands casually with a hand on her hip, keeping her palm flat and slightly sitting into her hip (Picture A). The other arm may be relaxed at her side. When she’s feeling confident or playful she puts both hands in fists with her knuckles on her hips and pushes forward from her chest (Picture B). She occasionally stands with her arms at her side with a bend in the elbow and slightly flexed wrist (Picture C).

When MOANA is determined to do something she straightens her arms and makes fists with her hands (Picture D). She sometimes brings her hands behind her back with bent elbows, holding a wrist with her other palm as she playfully leans forward (Pictures E and F).

At times MOANA may also keep her arms low in front, clasping a hand over her other wrist.

Gestures & Reactions

MOANA freely expresses her emotions through her movements and reactions. She doesn’t hesitate to show bursts of surprise, excitement, or joy, and her relaxed demeanor makes others feel comfortable with her.

Listening

MOANA is eager to hear stories of distant worlds and legendary feats. She’s also happy to listen to Guests describe their favorite things to do or places to travel. No matter what the Guest is sharing, MOANA listens closely, sometimes leaning in and focusing all her attention as she reacts to their story.

Excited

Even though she’s learning to be a leader of her people, MOANA still has a youthful spirit and energy. When she’s excited she can’t help showing it by lifting her shoulders and bringing her hands close to her body in fists, as though she can hardly contain herself.

Encouraging

MOANA is a true friend and she knows everyone needs a boost sometimes. She might tell Guests about the time she gave MAUI a little push by cheering him on, demonstrating how she chanted his name in an excited whisper and bringing her fist close to her chest as she exclaims, “Mau-i! Mau-i! You’re so amaziiiing!”

If a Guest needs a little encouragement MOANA will do the same for them, using their name or simply cheering them on excitedly.

High-five

When something goes well or if MOANA feels like celebrating she might offer the Guest a high-five, sharing her enthusiasm with them.

Wayfinding

As part of her role as a Master Wayfinder, MOANA reads the stars to figure out where she is and where she’s going on long ocean voyages. She may show Guests how she navigates the stars by raising one arm and positioning her hand with her palm flat, fingers together, and thumb extended.

Performer Note: Showing Guests how to wayfind should be done as an Activity moment rather than in posed photos.

Dancing

MOANA learned how to dance from Gramma Tala, and now she teaches those same dances to the children of Motunui. If a Guest is interested in dancing, MOANA may show them a few special moves from her village – she's always happy to share part of her home with them.

Performer Note: For more information please reference additional photos and the MOANA Dance Examples video on CharacterConnection.Disney.com.

Arm Movements

MOANA moves her arms naturally in reaction to things around her. She may bring one hand toward her chest with her fingers relaxed or in a fist, if she’s watching or listening to something. MOANA may bring both arms in front of her with slightly open hands when she’s feeling a little uncertain or as she’s gesturing while telling a story. If MOANA is telling a Guest about trying to convince MAUI to help her, she might push both arms down with her hands in fists, feeling the same determination and frustration as she shares her story.

Performer Note: MOANA would never react to a Guest in a frustrated manner. This should only be used when reenacting a moment with MAUI.

Greetings MOANA eagerly greets everyone like an old friend, making them feel right at home.

Waving

MOANA loves seeing people! She enthusiastically waves in greeting, reaching up and using a quick side-to-side motion of the wrist. Her other hand is at her side with a slightly flexed wrist or resting on her hip.

If a Guest is closer to her, MOANA extends an arm toward them, waving with a flexed wrist and the same side-to-side motion.

Hugging

MOANA is happy to share her affection for friends both old and new. She may greet a Guest with a hug, excited to share in this adventure with them.

Handshake

If a Guest offers to shake hands with MOANA, she might clasp their hand with both of hers or offer a hug instead – it is a more traditional greeting for her people.

Performer Note: You would not shake hands as a greeting.

Interacting with Shorter Guests

Walking

When a Guest’s height is at MOANA’s waist or lower, she kneels to interact on eye level with them so she can get nice and close. She kneels with her legs together and angled toward the Guest, placing one knee on the ground for support. MOANA may relax her posture as she kneels, dropping her shoulder and sometimes leaning in as she listens and reacts to the Guest.

Performer Note: For safety, when returning to a standing position, place a hand on your upper leg for support.

Moana walks with a natural pace and stride, swinging her arms lightly. She may place one hand on her hip when walking.

If Moana is eager to get somewhere, her pace quickens and she leans into the movement as she swings her arms with bent elbows and her hands in loose fists.

PARTNER ANIMATION When partnering it is imperative that the connection between between the Characters is evident, and their relationship must be believable. They should listen to and involve each other with interactions while ensuring the Guest is the focus.

With Maui

MOANA and MAUI didn’t exactly hit it off at first. MOANA grew up hearing stories of MAUI that made her believe he was self-absorbed, tricky, and only out for himself. When she met him that’s exactly how MAUI seemed, but as they journeyed together MOANA saw past MAUI’s tough exterior and inflated ego to the demigod he really was. She realized MAUI only tried to show off and be a hero so people would love him. Once MOANA saw that he had a good heart she tried to help MAUI realize he was more than his magical fishhook – he could be a hero just by being himself. In turn, MOANA learned from MAUI that she was braver and more capable than she ever imagined. MOANA and MAUI pushed each other to find their true identities and embrace them. To their surprise they ended up becoming great friends who will always have each other’s’ backs. Now they’re happy to run into each other in their travels, occasionally voyaging together across the ocean.

MOANA and MAUI have fun greeting Guests together. MAUI is charismatic and loves attention, and MOANA balances his energy with her relaxed, youthful spirit. MOANA may playfully tease MAUI for some of his antics, and she’ll raise an eyebrow if he starts to show off. MOANA is eager to tell Guests about her first ocean voyage with MAUI and learning to wayfind from him, and she helps share his stories with them, too.

AUTOGRAPH

See next page for Autograph Tips

MOANA is excited to sign a book for a Guest – it’s a great way to document their voyages! She continues to talk while signing, pausing to react to the Guest or share a thought. She presents the book to the Guest with a smile, happy to have shared in their journey.

Performer Notes: Sign the official autograph without embellishments. The autograph may be personalized with the Guest's name or a themed salutation, which is written in the Character’s handwriting.

Autograph Tips Use the arrows as a guide to writing the Character’s autograph. The arrows should not be included in the signed autograph.

1. The autograph is written in print-style handwriting.

2. Start with the left leg of the “M.” The center point goes to the bottom and the right leg curves out at the bottom. The right leg is longer than the left leg.

3. The “o” spirals around and into itself. It does not connect.

4. The spine of the “a” curves at the top and bottom. The curved line is shape like a “u.”

5. The spine of the “n” has a slight hook at the top. There is a small curve at the bottom of the leg.
