The Windows Store• The Windows Store is Microsoft’s central

location for distributing and purchasingapps.

• It provides access to both traditional appsas well as Windows apps (e.g., packagedapps).

Windows Apps• Windows apps use the new Windows user

interface (UI) designed to display and workacross Windows 8 devices with different form

factors and display sizes.• There are currently thousands of Windows 8

apps available within the store, and thenumber is continuing to grow on a daily

basis.

Microsoft Accounts• To install, reinstall, and update Windows

Store apps, you need a Microsoft accountand an Internet connection.

• A Microsoft account (formerly calledWindows Live ID) includes an email addressand a password that allows you to sign in toall Microsoft sites and services.

Uninstalling WindowsStore Apps

• If you decide after using the app that youno longer need it, right-click the app’s tile

and choose Uninstall from the menu that

appears along the bottom of the WindowsStart screen.

Reinstalling WindowsStore Apps

• Each time you install a Windows app on adevice, it’s saved to your Microsoft account

and the device is added to the list of

devices allowed to run it. This provides youwith two capabilities:

o You can install the app on up to five Windows 8devices using the same account.

o If you uninstall a Windows App, you can reinstall itquickly.

Restricting Access to theWindows Store Content

• You can restrict access to the WindowsStore content by using AppLocker, whichcan be used to control which Windows apps

are allowed to run through the configurationof rules and properties.

• AppLocker controls which applications andfiles users can run on their Windows 8 client

computers through the creation ofAppLocker rules.

Creating RulesYou can create AppLocker rules for a singlecomputer or a group of computers:

• For a single computer: Use the Local Security

Policy editor (secpol.msc) to modify localsecurity settings on your computer.

• For a group of computers: Use the GroupPolicy Management console (GPMC) within

a Group Policy object (GPO). A GPO is agroup of settings that define how acomputer will behave for a group of users.

Rule Collections• The AppLocker Microsoft Management console

is organized into four areas (executable files,scripts, Windows installer files, and packagedapps) called rule collections.

• Rule collections include the following:

o Executable files (.exe, .com)

o Scripts (.ps2, .bat, .js, .cmd, .vbs)

o Windows Installer files (.msi, .mst, .msp)o Appx (Packaged apps and Packaged app installers;

.appx) — This includes Windows apps and side-loadedline of business (LOB) apps.

Line of Business(LOB) Apps

• LOB apps include apps that are critical torunning the business of the company as well asapps that are unique to the main business ofthe company.

• If your organization has its own LOB apps, youhave two options for installing them on devicesrunning Windows RT, Windows 8 (Enterprise/Pro),and Windows Server 2012:

o Configure it through the Local Group Policyeditor (gpedit.msc) for a single computer, or

o Use GPMC if you are working in a domain-basedenvironment.

Group Policy Orderof Precedence

Group Policy settings are processed in thefollowing order:

1. Local Group Policy object.

2. Group Policies linked to the Site container.

3. Group Policies linked to the Domain container.

4. Group Policies linked to the Organizational Unitthat is highest in the OU hierarchy areprocessed first, followed by GPOs linked to thechild OU, and so on. If there are multiple GPOslinked to the same OU, they are processed inthe order specified by the administrator.
