Week beginning 20/04 /20 English Have you updated your diary for what you did during your first week at home? Remember to write about the different things you did in the correct order using time words to help you order your diary entry - first, then, next, after that, finally. Our theme for term 5 would have been ‘Sharing the planet’. Within this we would have been learning about the plants and animals we share the planet with. This week we are going to be looking at the story – The Zoo Vet. You can complete your writing tasks onto plain paper or inside the purple books which are part of your packs. Task 1 – Sharing the story – The Zoo Vet I have put a word document version of the story onto our class webpage. Please share the story with an adult – it would be lovely if you read the story to your adult, remember to use expression to make your story reading interesting to listen to. Once you have read the story create a story map of the main events in the same way you did for the story ‘Whatever next’ by Jill Murphy. Here is an example of the start of my story map. Once you have completed your story map, practice retelling the story to an adult.

Week beginning 20/04 /20

EnglishHave you updated your diary for what you did during your first week at home? Remember to write about the different things you did in the correct order using time words to help you order your diary entry - first, then, next, after that, finally.

Our theme for term 5 would have been ‘Sharing the planet’. Within this we would have been learning about the plants and animals we share the planet with. This week we are going to be looking at the story – The Zoo Vet.

You can complete your writing tasks onto plain paper or inside the purple books which are part of your packs.

Task 1 – Sharing the story – The Zoo VetI have put a word document version of the story onto our class webpage.

Task 2 – Describing the animalsThere are lots of different animals in the story but the author hasn’t described any of them. Draw a picture of each animal from the story and write some exciting sentences to describe it. Here is an example for the Tiger –

On Friday the strong stripy tiger wasn’t being very brave! He had a sharp spikey thorn stuck in his sift round paw.

Page 2: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/.../Week-beginning-20_04_…  · Web view2020-04-23 · Pick your favourite animal from the story and complete some research

Task 3 – Get well card

Oh no! At the end of the story the vet became poorly. Imagine you are a friend of the vet or one of the animals who is worried about him. Make a get well card and write a letter to go inside. Within your letter you could write about; how good he is at his job, that the animals are missing him and what he should do to help himself get better

Task 4 – favourite animalNext week we will be continuing our work on animals and The Zoo Vet story. Part of next week’s learning will involve you knowing some facts about a chosen animal. Pick your favourite animal from the story and complete some research about the animal. You could use one of the following child friendly search engines to search for information. Remember it’s important to stay safe on the internet – there are tips on how to stay safe on the internet at the bottom on class webpage.

https://www.kiddle.co/ https://www.alarms.org/kidrex/

Once you have found some facts record them down as sentences either onto a sheet of paper or into your purple books. Keep them safe until next week.

Task 5 - HomophonesIn our spelling lessons this week we would have been learning about some new homophones. A homophone is two words that sound the same but have different meanings. They are also spelt slightly differently. Here is a link to a website explaining what a homophone is - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqhpk2p/articles/zc84cwx Watch the video and then complete the questions and quiz underneath.

On our class webpage I have put a PowerPoint for you to work through. It revisits homophones we have already learnt and has a game to help you identify the correct homophone needed in different sentences.

SpellingsFor your spelling homework this week please learn the following spellings – new, knew, no, know, night, knight, not, knot, there, their. Please discuss the meaning of the different words to ensure the children know the correct meaning. Remember to write a sentence including each word. E.g. You can see the moon at night. The knight rescued the princess.

Maths

Mental Maths activities ● Practice counting on and back from different start number e.g. 25 - 26, 27, 28, 29,

30 and 25 - 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19. If you are finding this tricky please use the hundred square below to support your counting.

● Practice counting in 5s up to 50. Can you see a pattern in the numbers in the 5s count – look at the unit numbers, which two digits keep reoccurring? Here is a website where you can practice counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s - https://uk.ixl.com/math/year-2/counting-by-twos-fives-and-tens-with-pictures

● Practice your five times tables – remember to use your counting in fives learning to help you. You could sing the following song to help you learn your five times tables - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KyDZ7f1RfE&t=10s

● Doubles and halves – being able to recall your doubles and halves instantly is really important. Here are a couple of games to help your practice your doubles and halves - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Measurement – Position and directionThis week you will be doing lots of activities that involve you following and giving directions.

Task 1 – Describing movements – left, right, above and belowDraw around your hands onto a sheet of paper and label them left and right – you may need this to help you identify left and right during the activities this week.

Collect your cuddly toys and place them out onto the floor in rows. Take it in turns with an adult to ask questions about the position of different toys. E.g. Which toy is above the teddy? Which toy is below the dog? Which toy is to the left of the unicorn? Which toy is to the right of the monkey?

Page 4: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/.../Week-beginning-20_04_…  · Web view2020-04-23 · Pick your favourite animal from the story and complete some research

Task 2 – Describing movements – right, left, forwards and backwards.Today you will need to collect some smaller toys – toy cards, lego men, play-mobile men or mini models are great for this activity. Draw a grid like the one below onto a sheet of paper and place your toys onto the grid, making sure you space them out.

Once you have set up your grid take it in turns with an adult to give and follow instructions to move the toys around the grid. Use the directional language – left, right, forward and backwards. E.g. Move the toy car two spaces forward. Move the unicorn two spaces to the left.

Task 3 – Decribing movements – recording directionsOn the grid you used yesterday record the words start and finish.

FINISH

START

Choose a toy and colour in a route to move the toy from the start to the finish. Record directions for the route you have coloured. E.g. forward two squares, right three squares, forward two squares. With an adult you could practice giving and following instructions for different routes. You could also draw more grids and move your start and finish squares.

Task 4 – Revisiting the 4 operationsPlease solve the following number sentences to revisit your addition, subtraction, multiplication and division learning. Remember to visit our class webpage for help on the different methods you can use to solve these questions.

22 + 6 = 37 + 5 =33 + 24 = 48 + 25 =28 – 7 = 32 – 6 =58 – 23 = 63 – 25 =2 x 5 = 18 ÷ 3 =

Science task 1 In our Science lessons this week we would have been learning about the different parts of a plant. Have a look at the following website - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/z3wpsbkWatch the video about the different parts of a plant and complete the quiz to check your understanding.

Science task 2Draw a picture of a plant with a flower and label the different parts. Here is an example for you –

Science task 3To your labelled drawing of a plant please add caption boxes explaining what the different parts of the plant do. For example, for the flower you could write – The flower attracts bees and insects to the plant. The flower also produces seeds.

Science task 4In your garden or on one of your daily walks see how many different types of plants you can find. Draw pictures of the plants you find and label them.
