Saving Money In Several Areas With CowManager

Prior to investing in CowMan-ager, Trailside had been utilizing a fully timed A.I. program (PreSynch, OvSynch, ReSynch). In addition, for a year they had been tail chalking to help increase the heat detection rate. Since starting to breed the cows utilizing CowManager in January 2015, the repro program has been so successful that Mike has gradu-ally implemented several changes:

1. Shots (and related costs) have been reduced - breeding more cows off natural heatsa. Catching more cows in heat

after the Voluntary Waiting Period (VWP)

they are enrolled in OvSynch2. Breeding more cows at the

optimal time of insemination3. Three months after all the

breeding cows had CowMan-ager tags (tags are currently put on as animals enter the

prefresh pen), tail chalking was elim-inated

(they no longer hire a company to do that), saving them money. Mike notes, “At this point, I was

confident enough in the system to stop tail chalking and it’s been going great.”

Mike also notes that with Cow-Manager they are catching more

cows in heat at 19-22 days since

last heat and identifying cows that come into heat early or late on the

timed OvSynch program. This is probably one of the factors that has contributed to Trailside’s repro analysis summary showing that the percent of cows confirmed pregnant at less than 150 DIM has jumped from 36% before CowManager was installed to 45% now.Utilizing Modules Together

Using the health module in conjunction with the fertility module to confirm heats is one of the “big-gest benefits” of CowManager, notes Mike. In their herd when a cow is actually in heat, rumination time decreases and eating time increases. Mike explains that this helps him separate the cows that are actually in estrus from the ones that have increased activity from pen moves, cystic cows and false heats.Detecting Health Problems Sooner

Prior to CowManager, Trailside really didn’t have any tools to moni-tor cow health. With CowManager, early detection of mastitis, fresh cow illnesses and subclinical respi-ratory infections has been substan-tial. “I am treating cows sooner, which sometimes means I am able to use supportive medications instead of antibiotics,” states Mike. Then, he uses temperature, eating time, rumination time and activity time to determine if the treatment is working or if further action is needed. “I am definitely catching the majority of sick cows earlier. In most cases, there is a faster recovery and the cows bounce back sooner.” Because Mike constantly looks at the information, he can take immediate action to intervene if a cow only temporarily responds to treatment and then takes a turn for the worse.

Mike concludes, “The service I have received during and after the installation of the CowManager system has been extremely valu-able and timely. Select Sires is a progressive company that I look forward to partnering with well into the future.”

hen Peder and Susan Barsness, Starbuck, MN were looking for a way to

efficiently manage their cows, they decided to purchase CowManager.

They felt that the CowManager ear tags seemed like a worry free way to monitor herd health and manage heat detection compared to a collar system. “The ear tags are easy to put in and you don’t have to deal with the hassle of switch-ing collars from cow to cow,” notes Peder. The Barsnesses installed CowManager and attached 130 CowManager ear tags on Christmas Eve of 2014. Since then, they have relied 100% on CowManager for heat detection.

“Before CowManager, I would have to jump out of the skid steer to try and see the ear tag of a cow in standing heat in the barn. Now with CowManager, I can trust the system to tell me who is in heat 24 hours a day,” states Peder.

The CowManager ear tag is de-tecting cows who usually don’t show strong heats for the Barsnesses. “I recall breeding five cows who were not showing visual standing heats, but were showing heats on Cow-Manager. When I palpated them,

they felt great and I bred them. Three of the five were pregnant on the next herd check and that’s ex-actly what I want!” explains Peder.

The herd’s overall re-productive performance has improved. The aver-age DIM pregnant has dropped from 176 days to 149 while the 21-day pregnancy rate has improved five percent.

Susan Barsness is also a big fan of CowManager. “When we are on vacation with the family, I’m able to look at CowManager directly from my phone. It is reassuring that I can still monitor the farm when I’m away from home and check in with employees about alerted cows,” says Susan.

The Barsnesses utilize CowMan-ager’s health module for early iden-tification of cows that are getting sick or have displaced abomasums.

When asked about their invest-ment in CowManager, Peder replies with confidence, “It’s going to pay for itself in no time for us. It was a no brainer!”

odd Heieie, Brooten, MN milks 120 cows and was looking for a way to improve the heat de-

tection on his dairy. After research-ing the options, Todd installed CowManager from Select Sires. “The ear tags seemed like a better way of monitoring cows than other systems out there,” explains Todd.

Since installing CowManager in February of 2015, Todd has seen an increase in reproductive perfor-mance on his dairy. “Heat detection has been amazing, especially at night. I’m breeding more cows than I was with visual heat detection,” states Todd. The Heieies are getting cows pregnant faster - 44% of the cows are pregnant at less than 150 days in milk compared to 29% in November 2014.

Todd believes CowManager’s

health module has been a big benefit to the dairy. He continues, “It helps us find sick cows sooner and helps us make management decisions on individual cows.” The herd is now at 134 SCC compared to 381 in November.

The mobile version of CowManager has also been a valuable tool and asset for Todd. “I can be in another state and still see everything that is going on with the cows.”

Todd feels CowMan-ager is a very good in-vestment and declares, “CowMan-ager is the best money I’ve spent on my cows - it just works!”

ince Dr. Paul Fricke, University of Wisconsin-Madison spoke at the 2015 Central Plains

Dairy Expo, a 30 percent pregnancy rate (PR) on a 30,000 pound dairy herd has been the topic of great interest. Fricke encouraged produc-ers not to be happy with a 20-24% pregnancy rate, but instead strive for 30%. Herd reproductive perfor-mance is critical for profitability, and pregnancy rate affects a multi-tude of areas on the dairy including days in milk, culling, number of replacements born, days open, etc.

Fricke stressed that producers need to focus on four key areas to achieve a 30% 21-day pregnancy rate:

1. Aggressively inseminate cows at the end of the vol-untary waiting period (VWP)Many dairies struggle with

getting semen in cows in a timely manner after the end of the VWP. Today, a variety of tools are avail-able that can help. Monitoring devices (such as CowManager and Heatime) and tail chalk-ing programs increase the effi-ciency of estrous detection. As well, synchroni-zation programs

and timed A.I. can help you get se-men in virtually all eligible animals.

2. Increase fertility of first A.I.Inseminating at the proper time

so that semen reaches the healthy and viable egg is important.

Some of our producers are deter-mining the best time to inseminate by looking at the activity graphs of CowManager and Heatime.

Many of our producers use synchronization programs to utilize

hormones in a structured schedule to initiate ovulation and allow the implementation of timed A.I. There-fore, compliance to the protocols is critical. In a PreSynch/OvSynch protocol, even 95% compliance at each dose isn’t enough because that only translates to 77% compli-ance across the entire program. GnRH based synch programs are also successfully used to induce cyclicity in anovular cows.

3. Identify nonpregnant cows and aggressively reinsemi-nate themRelying on synchronization of

ovulation and timed A.I. can im-prove first service A.I. insemination rates. However after first service, cows that do not become pregnant too often fall through the cracks and do not get re-inseminated dur-ing their next heat cycle because of poor estrous expression or detec-tion. Because 60% or more of lac-tating cows will fail to conceive to a given A.I. service, timely rebreed-ing of these cows is essential for improving reproductive efficiency and profitability. Vet palpation or ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis is also important to determine if a cow is cystic, noncycling, or in the luteal or follicular phase of the reproductive cycle.

4. Increase fertility of sec-ond and greater servicesStudies have shown that even if

a cow does not become pregnant after the first service, it is possible to achieve a 30% pregnancy rate. Monitoring systems and ReSynch programs are excellent options to improve reproductive efficiency. There are many options for ReSynch programs, including those that can be initiated before pregnancy determination.

Above: a 300-cow herd that does not heat detect. If a cow is open at preg. check, they re-enter her in a synchronization program. By utilizing heat detection, an activity moni-toring system, or Resynching with GnRH seven days prior to preg check, the herd could increase 4% PR, which could easily save them from $13,000 to $20,000 each year ($44 to $71/cow/yr * x 300 cows).

oday’s youth are the agricul-tural leaders of tomorrow. Minnesota Select Sires is con-

tinuing its tradition of supporting the future of the local dairy industry by awarding scholarships to stu-dents pursuing agricultural careers. The cooperative inaugurated the program 14 years ago.

Minnesota Select Sires General Manager Chris Sigurdson com-ments, “This scholarship program is one part of our effort to be a foundational “champion” of the local dairy and beef industries. The program has allowed us to get a great sense of the impact our lead-ers of tomorrow are already having on our industry. Being responsive to our members’ needs is one of the fundamental goals of our coop-erative, and helping their children achieve their educational pursuits has been well received.”

Chris notes that considerably fewer students have applied for the scholarships in the last couple of years and encourages all eligible students to apply.

Two deserving students were selected as winners of the $500 scholarships this year. This year’s winners are: Andrew Krause, son of Charles and Robyn Krause, Buffalo, MN; Susan Hintz, daughter of Bob and Debbie Hintz, Flasher, ND.

Qualifying candidates must be a family member of a Minnesota Select Sires cooperative member in good standing, and must be com-pleting at least the first semester of the second year in a two or four year program. Applicants need to submit an application, grade transcripts, and a written essay. In a blinded approach to judging, the selection committee evaluates 1) dairy industry pursuits, 2) academic achievement, 3) active involvement in activities aligned with support of the dairy industry.

If you or someone you know is interested in this year’s scholar-ship, applications are due October 31, 2015. For more information, contact Minnesota Select Sires at 800-795-1233 or [email protected]. Minnesota Select Sires

global company, Select Sires, Inc. is dedicated to enhancing the productivity

and profitability of dairy and beef producers. But, the beauty of Select Sires’ structure here in the U.S. is that it is comprised of nine farmer owned and controlled cooperatives that are focused on the local needs of their own members.

As customer-owners of Minne-sota Select Sires Co-op, Inc., you expect your cooperative to profit-ably serve your herd’s genetic de-velopment and reproductive needs. We are built to serve the type of producers that expect results---the best their available dollars can buy. AND we do it with local expertise, local employees who are part of your community, working together for strong beef and dairy industries in Minnesota and North Dakota.

2015’s business year is much stronger than anticipated. This is a great sign that our customers’ businesses have remained healthy following a year like 2014. You’ll find the growth of the Coop this year is coming very strongly from both dairy and beef customers.

Our professional service teams are hard at work heat detecting and inseminating while our genetic and reproductive technical experts are providing additional guidance. We’ve also seen a strong continued investment in cow monitoring sys-tems and this year the CowManager system is leading the charge.

I’m extremely proud to be part of the growing number of individuals that are making success happen every day. With 55 passionate, dedicated employees, your coop-erative is strong, growing and local.

‘Think Globally-Act Locally’ that’s what we do for you!

ften you cannot maximize your herd’s performance, reproduction, and genetic

potential because of the animal’s inability to deal with stress. The L-form Lactobacil-lus, along with the other specialized ingredients in the BioCycle line of products, enhance the animal’s immune system to overcome the negative effects of everyday challeng-es and stress.

Unique & ProprietaryThe secret to the success of this

unique and proprietary product line is the cell-wall deficient bacteria-based technology. L-Form bacteria have an excellent shelf life and sur-vive when mixed with high mineral feed ingredients, allowing them to reach the lower digestive system unharmed and ready to go to work to enhance health, performance, and reproductive efficiency in livestock. Two of the products (DTX & BioCycle Plus) are formulated to specifically counter the debilitating effects of mycotoxins. No More Hassle With On-Farm Mixing

Many producers are having their

feed mills mix the concentrate directly into their rations. Some feed mills are keeping inventory in stock or you can have the product shipped directly to the feed mill. Ask your nutritionist or feed consul-tant if they are already doing this for other customers. Or contact Chad Christensen at 651-764-2175 and he can make arrangements for you. It will save you time and the hassle of mixing at the dairy. Save Money

BioCycle, BioCycle Plus, DTX and Ultimate are all available in concentrate form and cost less than the non-concentrates.
