Our mission is…… to lead the world in transforming the lives of all individuals with

disabilities and complex health care needs, their families and the

community through outreach, engagement, premier educational

programs, innovative research and extraordinary patient care.

MMI Organizational Facts• 1922 – founded as the Hattie Baker Munroe Home for Convalescing Crippled

Children.• 2009 – One of the 8 academic units at UNMC (COM, CON, COD, COP, CPH,

CAH, MMI, Eppley Institute)• 15 Departments; approximately 500 employees• Five supporting Boards: MMI, HBM, MFD, MMI Guild, Scottish Rite• Four Core Grants/Contracts:

• Federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD)

• Federally designated Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program)

• NIH Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA)• NIH Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE)

FINANCES:• More than $37,000,000 yearly budget• More than $8,000,000 in federal, state grants and contracts• Greater than $2,000,000 /year in philanthropy

I. ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• More than 70,000 yearly services (75% takes place in the community)

• Over 50 provider locations across the state (>40 outside Omaha)

• More than 50 types of services provided

• More than 55,000 genetic tests, 130 types of genetics tests provided

to 49 states nationwide and to 4 international locations

• Compliance review completed, measures implemented

• New patient-friendly waiting room at yellow canopy entrance

• Monitor with bilingual messaging at waiting room area

• Drastically reduced patient waiting times in Psychology and Genetic

Medicine

A. CLINICAL / PATIENT CARE

• Social worker hired in Developmental Medicine

• MMI approved as the designated state entity (DSE) for Nebraska's federal

Part B independent living funding.

• Expansion of the ACT Clinic (Autism Care for Toddlers) Program

• Full Speech Language Pathology contract with Nebraska Medicine

• OT/PT contract with Nebraska Medicine small bowel transplant team

• New embedded provider (psychologist) in Norfolk and Grand Island

• Occupational Therapy provided Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy

(HABIT) camp.

• Pediatric Feeding Disorders launched SEEDS (Starting Early: Eating and

Developmental Skills).

• Lois, Starr, M.D., and cardiologist Anji Yetman, M.D., initiated a

Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic for the evaluation of patients with genetic

disorders affecting the aorta.

• LEND grant renewed (over $700,000/year for 5 years; PI Dr. Ellis)

• SEPA grant awarded (over $250,000/year for 5 years/ PI Dr. Godfrey)

• UCEDD grant awarded (over $550,000/year for 5 years: PI Dr. Stuberg)

• MOU with UNO signed for Masters in Psychology ABA program

• Two physicians recruited into Genetic Medicine Fellowship

• Genetic counselor master’s program funded

• Pivotal Response Training (PRT) for more than 40 providers

B. EDUCATION / TRAINING

• AUCD International Fellowship site• Summer internship for Native American Youth• Over 11,000 participants in workshops, conferences, teleconferences

and other community education activities• 107 long-term trainees (doctoral, masters, interns)• Interdisciplinary training in 2015/16: 172 students, interns, residents and

post-doctoral fellows for a total of 118,136 hours• 15 major education, research and community awards

• Approximately 40 faculty involved in research activities• At least 150 clinical and research fellows were trained at MMI in the

last fifteen years• MMI grand rounds re-established• New confocal microscope for basic science researchers • Expanded extramural research funding• Exploring collaboration with iEXCEL, NSRI, Purdue Pharma• Seed grant program implemented

C. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITES

• Updated MMI Mission Statement, new organization chart

• MOU with University of Debrecen, Hungary

• External Advisory Council formed

• “Fast facts” information sheets created for MMI and each department

• Security assessment and securing the building

• Revised tenure and promotion guidelines; many new policies

D. ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

• Organized and hosted a collaboration meeting with health care

provider partners

• MMI Leadership Planning Retreat at Carol Joy Holling

• MMI Leadership team building exercises

• New program celebrates MMI 'Stand-Outs'

• Weekly yoga class for MMI employees (free)

• Community breakfast with our stakeholders

• MMI Monthly and weekly MMI News established

• Yearly report completed and distributed

• Listening tour: Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, Fremont, Columbus,

Norfolk

• MLK Lecture – Alexander Roedlach, Creighton University

• Engaged more than 10 community organizations

• South Omaha community forum

• Scottish Rite Professorship endowed; multiple gifts received

• Go Baby Go by Physical Therapy and UNO students

• Crafted part of LB 438 - $2M/year tobacco settlement for MMI

E. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

• New brochures for each department, translating to be bilingual

• Photography portfolio - approximately 300 new pictures

• Theater camp with WhyArts? – 32 national news outlets carried story

• Digitizing our history

• Commissioned a journalist to write up MMI history

• Rite Care Walk, Walk and Roll, Denim for Disabilities, Owl Ride, Garden Walk

• “Light it up Blue” initiative for Autism illuminated Hope Tower & MMI

• MMI helped state establish ENABLE accounts with Frist National Bank

• Phi Rho's Second Annual Golf Tournament

• Expanded membership in the Nebraska State Autism Collaborative

• Community lecture by Dr. Wallace about multisensory integration in ASD

• New, patient-oriented Web site

• Celebrated 35 years of Camp Munroe
