City Financial Serv. Manager gone City of Merritt CAO Shawn Boven confirmed yesterday that Ben Currie is no longer an employee of the City. A job posting on the City’s website states that they are “looking for a desig- nated finance professional (CPA) to fill the role of Financial Services Manager. In addition to overseeing the daily opera- tions of the finance department, this po- sition also performs the role of Tax Collector.” Applications will be reviewed starting September 9, and will continue until the position is filled. Fire danger rating headed to ‘extreme’ Merritt & the Nicola Valley fire dan- ger rating currently sits at ‘high’, but with hot dry weather forecast for this weekend, the BC Wildfire Service says it is expected to level up to ‘extreme’. Environment Canada shows temper- atures above 30° through most of the weekend, a bit of a dip down to 22° on Sunday, then back up to the high 20s next week. No rain in the foreseeable future. Coldwater River near ‘level 4’ drought condition Despite normal flows for many streams and Level 1 drought conditions elsewhere within the Nicola region, low flows in the Coldwater River system are nearing Level 4, or “extremely dry,” drought conditions. The Province is urging surface water and groundwater users within the Cold- water River system and Merritt municipal boundaries to voluntarily reduce con- sumption by 30%, in accordance with the provincial BC Drought Response Plan. Low flows on the Coldwater River are threatening chinook salmon, which are currently in the river system. With con- tinued hot, dry weather in the forecast, river flows are expected to continue to drop. These low flows not only threaten spawning salmon, but all fish populations in the Coldwater system. Ministry staff are closely monitoring river levels and may upgrade drought levels and consider regulation of water usage if the weather continues to have a negative effect on stream flows and water supply. Residential, agricultural and industrial users within municipalities & regional districts are encouraged to observe local water con- servation bylaws. Similar to 2015, partial or complete closures of the Coldwater River for recreational fisheries may need to occur this summer. Water conservation is everyone’s responsibility.
