LA TripEight of MSA’s talented students are baskingin the excitement of their Hollywood extravaganza during Winter Learning. Funand learning abounded! This was a realitycheck of show business…the glamour andthe hard work from behind the scenes to infront of the camera. A huge highlight was visiting the set of Entertainment Tonight (ET).ET star, Mark Steines acted as a mentor asstudents watched the stars taping and doingvoice-over recordings for the show. Play-by-play commentary of each aspect of theprocess was provided by Mark.Mary Hart and the cast and crew. Then

Mark took the kids on a private, VIP tour ofthe entire studio. They met all of the crewand got to actually spend time in the editingbay, graphics department, costume shop, teleprompter station and with the sound designer, technical director and the director. They watched them work and each crewmember took time to explain everything theywere doing. They told fun stories and sharedphilosophy. We went to the news room andsaw where and how research was done. Thiswas far more than a ‘fluff tour’. It was a truelearning experience. The rest of the week was filled with

exciting workshops and celebrities. Studentsdid a voice-over workshop; audition work-shop; several acting classes; scene study; Q &A’s with industry professionals; saw an im-prov show; theatrical production of Proof;went to Universial Studios; Santa MonicaPier; the beach; Hollywood Bowl; Chinese

For added fun, the students recreated theirlearning by putting on several performancesfor the Lower, Middle and PreUpper schoolson January 28.

Lasting ImpressionsYou’ve seen them before at the movies and atthe theater: posters, displays and cutouts ofcharacters or scenes from previous or comingevents. Usually larger than life, they wowedyou, enticed you and tickled your imagina-tion. This was the driving force behind week-one of this year’s Winter Learning forMSA’s student artists. Through a class called“Combining Characters, Cutouts and Color,”

students brought to life theatrical productionssuch as Once Upon a Mattress, Little Shop of Horrors, and Joseph and the AmazingTechnicolor Dream Coat with hand painteddisplays. During week two students participated in

“Artistry in Set Design,” taught by Mill Springs’ Technical Director, JamieFambrough. The course was designed to direct students in the masterful art of build-ing and decorating sets and props specific to MSA’s upcoming Spring Musical,Masquerade, and the Middle School’s playThe Bridge to Terabithia. Everyone did a wonderful job in creating set pieces that will continue to spark our memories andimaginations for years to come.

Hiking North GeorgiaFor the second week of this year’s WinterLearning Program, a group of fourteen students from MSA’s Communication Arts Department led by teachers MatthewMcConnell and Michael Griffeth went on a series of day hikes around north Georgia. Communication ArtsTakes a Monumental Trip The sun rises beyond a panorama of rich-redbuttes, infusing the sky with a kaleidoscope ofreds, pinks, and orange shafts of light. It’s justanother morning in Monument Valley for thestudents of Communication Arts, who traveledto Arizona and Utah for their annual trip toStagecoach Trails Dude Ranch. After experi-encing “the world’s best sunrise,” accordingto student Carly Reynolds, the group hikedthrough the canyons of Monument Valleywith four Navajo Native American guides.“Around every corner there was a spectacularview,” said student Devin Orkin. The guidesshowed the group petro glyphs created by

the ancient Indian tribes. They also learnedthe history of the Navajo code talkers duringWorld War II. One of the highlights of thetrip for student J.C. Howard was the porcu-pine they discovered in a tree. “We had studied the wildlife of the mesa, but it wascool to actually see a real live animal.”Eighth-grade student Lindsey Flax liked the Navajo food: “fry bread rules!,” she exclaimed. In addition to their trip to Monument

Valley, the group enjoyed a train ride toGrand Canyon north where they viewed thebreathtaking vistas of the famous landmark. Then it was back to the Dude Ranch where

they rode horses, had cowboy poetry read-ings, participated in a rodeo, watched oldWestern movies such as Stagecoach starringJohn Wayne, learned to line-dance, studieddesert ecology, and learned to sing oldWestern classics such as Cool Water andHappy Trails. “Our goal is to give the studentsa total immersion in Western and NativeAmerican culture,” said chaperone MatthewMcConnell. “Our students are some of thefew kids their ages who have been exposed toThe Cisco Kid, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, and Bonanza,” he added. “For another point of view, we showed them Bury My Heart atWounded Knee, the story of Chief SittingBull’s last days.” The group also traveled to an old western

mining town in Oatman, Arizona where thekids got to pet the wild burros which roamthe streets. Eighth grade student, ErinMcCallum, summed up the trip best whenshe said, “two weeks is not enough outhere…let’s build MSA West right here inArizona.”

Rock Band The screech of a pinch harmonic, the crashing of a cymbal, the utter failure of trying to reach the same pitch of Steven Tylerin Dream On: this was the Winter learningprogram, Rockband. Students joined forcesto form three bands: • M.A.D.E—named for the members whowere Matt Mosley, Alexandra Mail, Erin

For the second year in a row, TheCommunication Arts Department hasbeen awarded a $1,500 “Bright Ideas”

grant from the Sawnee EMC Foundation. This program is designed to help schools withprojects that are worth pursuing and thatoffer educational opportunities above and beyond the regular classroom experience. The grant was given to Communication Artsto help support their India Festival, which involved students dressing as notable Indiancharacters, giving a speech about their character, preparing an Indian food, and creating a display featuring the person theyare representing. The students also help design and paint sets for the event.Social studies teacher O.B. Stokes noted,

“The Sawnee EMC grant really helped bringthe cultural experience to a more meaningfullevel. We were able to enrich the festival witha classical Indian dancer who not only taughtthe students the history of Indian dance, butalso taught them the dances. And best of all,

every student at Mill Springs attended theevent, so everyone gets the benefit of thisgrant.” Student Mason Taylor summed it upbest: “Hey, it’s a really cheap way to visitIndia! I felt like I was really there.” O.B.Stokes, the social studies teacher who

organized the festival, also noted that it…“helps our kids learn in the way they lovebest”… “hands-on and experiential. It’s agreat way for students to learn about historywhile getting a boost of self-esteem in theprocess.”

Lower School Makes Reading Fun!

Mill Springs’ Lower School students, teachers and principal participated in “Book Character Dress Up Day”. Everyone dressed up as theirfavorite book character, then paraded the campus for all to see.
