    CHALLENGE

    Te 8-3/8 hole section o wells in Abu Butabul field spans differentormations with high variations in lithology, including carbonates,compacted claystone, and very abrasive Siltstone and Sandstone. Withcompressive rock strength that ranges rom 15,000 to 35,000 PSI, theresulting hardness and abrasiveness typically required the customerto use several impregnated bits on a turbine motor in order to achievesection D.

    Halliburton Drill Bits and Services was challenged to provide a PDCbit solution that would achieve multiple planned objectives: replacethe impregnated bits and turbine with a long-lasting PDC that wouldeliminate the trip time to surace or bit changes; and both extenddrilling depth per bit and achieve higher ROP.

    SOLUTIONHalliburton Drill Bits and Services worked with the customer, usingthe DatCISMprocess to develop a cost-effective and reliable solutionusing a MegaForceMdrill bit design run on a Rotary Packed Assembly.

    Te resulting eight-bladed MM84DH eatured an aggressive dual-rowcutting structure incorporating advanced 13mm - SelectCutterMPDCtechnology. Reinorcing the nose, shoulder, and gage, the dual-rowcutting structure helps extend bit lie once the primary cutters becomeworn or damaged, while the SelectCutter PDC technology combinesuperior abrasion- and impact-resistance with greater thermal stabilityto withstand riction heat generated during the drilling process andlimit heat build-up.

    Te 8-3/8 MM84DH bit successully drilled shoe to shoe, a total o994.5 meters (3,263 f) in 121 hours, achieving an average ROP o 8.2

    m/hr (27 f/hr), and setting a new record or the longest and astestinterval in the field.

    In this outstanding single run perormance, the MM84DH MegaForcedrill bit rom Halliburton Drill Bits and Services successully achievedall planned objectives, as well as drilling the longest and astest sectionin Abu Butabul field reducing well construction time by 19.5 days.
