Invitation from the Conference Organising CommitteeCAIRNS, QUEENSLAND, one of Australia’s greatest attractions, is the venue for Medicines Management 2013, the 39th SHPA National Conference from 19-22 September 2013.
Medicines Management 2013 invites pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and associates practising anywhere in the health system to Get Smart, Get Personal and Get Inspired about their practice and the delivery of pharmacy services into the future.
The health care barometer is rising. We are under increasing pressure to optimise medicines management, patient safety and quality in an evolving and increasingly demanding health care environment.
To swim against the tide and emerge victorious from a battle with the elements, we need to GET SMART. We can innovate and embrace technology to improve the way we work. We can make the most of our technician workforce. We can harness
the power of research to demonstrate the value of our contribution to patient care. We can grow our minds through education and training.
To build capacity and nurture relationships within the health care team, we need to GET PERSONAL. We can assist one another and our colleagues to realise their full potential at work. We can personalise evidence based medicine to ensure our patients’ needs are met. We can develop our professional networks to broaden our spheres of influence.
To secure our rightful place in the future as expert leaders in medicines management, we need to GET INSPIRED.
We invite you to join us in Cairns to tackle these hot topics in the tropics. You will enjoy a diverse scientific program, thought-provoking speakers, a stellar social calendar, and an invigorating dose of sunshine, rainforest and reef!

0900-1500 SHPA PHARMACIST LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: Managing the challenges of performance reviews: Critical feedback skillsFacilitator: sonia thomas, Thinking Matters, Senior Neuropsychologist
Registration is open to SHPA members only. Registration is complimentary for SHPA members who hold positions on SHPA Branch committees, Committees of Specialty Practice, Reference Groups or other official SHPA working groups / committees. A nominal registration fee of $70 (incl GST) is required for all other members. Numbers are limited and will be allocated in order of receipt and payment of registration. Details of your SHPA position must be included with your registration.
Managing the Challenges of Performance ReviewsPerformance reviews often engender strong responses from both parties involved, such as fear, stress, and defensiveness and can leave even experienced managers wondering about their effectiveness. A clinical manager is in a critical position to influence the client experience (e.g. prevention of harm to clients, effectiveness of clinical input) by facilitating staff development and addressing underperformance. Fundamentally, improving performance is about behaviour change and effective feedback skills are the tools for achieving this. The main areas that will be covered in the workshop will be building a foundation on which to conduct performance reviews, recognizing and facilitating readiness to change and feedback skills to encourage behaviour change. Overall, the workshop will give participants the opportunity to discuss challenges in conducting performance reviews, and to develop practical techniques for managing these through self-reflection and group discussion.

Host CityCairns is a tropical paradise tucked between the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea, and the lush rolling downs of the Atherton Tablelands to the west. A jewel in the crown of Australia’s natural attractions – enjoy adrenaline-charged adventures such as diving, white water rafting and bungy jumping, or more gentle pursuits such as birdwatching, strolling through the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest, or sipping a cocktail beneath a spectacular sunset.
Cairns is generally hot all year round, but September should see relatively low humidity, and daytime temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius.
AccommodationSpecial accommodation rates have been negotiated for Conference delegates at a number of hotels within easy walking distance of the Cairns Convention Centre. To receive the special accommodation rates, bookings must be made via the Conference Secretariat and not with the hotels directly. Accommodation is only available for the Conference dates, but can be organised outside these dates on a ‘on request’ basis.
All accommodation bookings are subject to availability. Please note that accommodation in Cairns is in high demand during the month of September, and delegates are advised to secure their preferred accommodation options early.
Please visit the conference website for details of each property. All hotels listed below are within a 5 minute walk of the conference venue.
