United have acquired U.S. National Team midfielder, Paul Arriola, from

Liga MX side, Club Tijuana, on a permanent transfer, to a multi-year Young

Designated Player contract. The transfer fee marks the largest amount

the organization has paid to a foreign club in franchise history, breaking

the record set last offseason when Luciano Acosta was signed from Boca

Juniors. Completion of the transfer is pending the receipt of the player’s

International Transfer Certificate. United acquired Arriola’s rights from the

LA Galaxy in exchange for $300,000 in general allocation money ($200,000

in 2018 and $100,000 in 2019) and $200,000 in targeted allocation money

    in 2018.

Arriola joins Major League Soccer after spending the last four years in Liga

MX with Club Tijuana. The Chula Vista, CA, native made over 100 appear-

ances in all competitions for Xolos, and made his Liga MX debut on July 19,

2013 as an 18-year-old. Less than a week later, he scored in the CONCACAF

Champions League. Most recently, Arriola scored the game-winning goal

for Tijuana on Tuesday in the Copa MX.

The versatile forward has represented the United States at every level,

culminating in his senior team debut on May 22, 2016, against Puerto Rico,

where he scored and had an assist. Arriola became only the ninth player in

U.S. history to score a goal in his first two international matches when he

scored the Yanks’ final goal in their 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago

in September’s World Cup Qualifier (which also happened to be his WCQ

    debut).

  • 2017 Game Notes Saturday, August 12 2

On the effort after going down a man…

“I'm proud of the group. I thought the first half we played well and our energy, commitment and discipline were good. The second

half was a different ball game because we were down to 10 men but it took guts and the guys dug in. We were selfless and disci-

plined in how we defended for the second half. It was a performance that we can build on.”

    On the own goal…

“Each game has its own story…but, so what? We talked about it and I asked 'what’s your response to all this?' It would be easy for

these guys to not be selfless and disciplined in the second half and to throw their hands up, because there’s been a lot of things that

have not gone our way this year. But they didn’t.”

    On scoring early…

“This game takes a collective effort from the team and if there isn’t a joint effort then you’re in trouble. Tonight was a group perfor-

mance across the board and that’s what it takes to get points in this league. If we don’t play for each other, dig in and do the little

things right then we won’t get points. That mentality was there tonight and it’s encouraging because it’s been a while since we’ve

    had that kind of discipline.”

    On possible new signings…

“There will be a signing or two in the next few days to bolster this group. There are still a lot of things playing out over the next cou-

ple of days, both within the league and outside of it. You’ll certainly see a new player or two.”

    United midfielder Marcelo Sarvas

    On defensive success...

“First of all, I think it’s not the result we deserved today. They didn’t really create anything in front of our goal. There were crosses,

but everyone was in good position doing their job. If someone was out of position, the other one was working. So, I think the disci-

pline and the commitment was the key of this game. The message is important that we showed today nobody’s with the situation

    we’re in.”

    On possible new signings...

“We’re in last position. We don’t have the luxury to say we don’t need this or that. … But if the player that comes comes with the

same mentality to help everyone here, it’s important. It doesn’t matter the position, it doesn’t matter what kind of players come, you

know? If you come to add something, it’s what we need.”

On defending Bradley, Altidore and Giovinco...

“It’s not easy. You close down Altidore and then you have to be thinking about where Bradley is, where Giovinco is. … Everyone has to

be alert [all] 90 minutes and I think we did well tonight.”

    MIDFIELDER MARCELO SARVAS QUOTES

    HEAD COACH BEN OLSEN QUOTES

  • 2017 Game Notes Saturday, August 12 3

    DEFENDER KOFI OPARE QUOTES

On being down a man against Toronto...

“It’s tough. Obviously with eleven guys they’re a very potent attacking team and to play with ten men was even harder. But the guys

fought, worked for each other and managed to come away with a point.”

On drawing against the best team in the league...

“It instills confidence. It definitely shows that we are capable of playing well. The past few games we haven’t really shown up at all

and do this against arguably the best team in MLS right now is a testament to the quality we have on this team, even though, like I

said, we haven’t shown it at times. The quality is still there. We are able to put in a good performance.”

On changing mindset for second half...

“As professionals, we have to prepare ourselves for different scenarios. You don’t want to be a man down, but I think everyone un-

derstood what we needed to do as soon as we went down a man. Everyone fought for each other and even though it’s not three, it’s a

point and we can definitely build off this performance.”

HISTORY AND LAST GAME V. REAL SALT LAKEUnited are 7-7-5 all-time against Real Salt Lake and 6-0-3 at home. The Black-and-Red have scored 31 goals against the Royals with 23 scored at RFK Stadium. The last time the two teams met, they tied 1-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 1, 2016, thanks to a stoppage time goal from Jared Jeffrey (92’). Juan Manuel Martinez scored a 57th minute goal in the draw. Satur-day’s matchup will be the 20th all-time between the two clubs.

UNITED ACQUIRE PAUL ARRIOLAUnited have acquired U.S. National Team midfielder, Paul Arriola, from Liga MX side, Club Tijuana, on a permanent transfer, to a multi-year Young Designated Player contract. The transfer fee marks the largest amount the organization has paid to a foreign club in franchise history, breaking the record set last offseason when Luciano Acosta was signed from Boca Juniors. Completion of the transfer is pending the receipt of the player’s International Transfer Certificate. United acquired Arriola’s rights from the LA Galaxy in exchange for $300,000 in general allocation money ($200,000 in 2018 and $100,000 in 2019) and $200,000 in targeted alloca-tion money in 2018.

UNITED ACQUIRE ZOLTÁN STIEBERUnited acquired Hungarian midfielder Zoltán Stieber from 1. FC Kaiser-slautern in Germany on a permanent transfer. The 28-year-old has 21 caps for the Hungarian national team, including three appearances during the 2016 UEFA European Championship. Stieber scored against Austria in Hungary’s first match at the tournament and has appeared in matches throughout World Cup and Euro qualification. He also made 129 appear-ances in 2. Bundesliga, scoring 26 goals and recording 38 assists.

After making 51 appearances for the reserve team, Canouse made 20 appear-ances in 2. Bundesliga for Vfl Bochum. A box-to-box or holding midfielder, Canouse has also played on the right side of defense. He scored one goal in 2. Bundesliga last season and played at the CONCACAF U-20 Champion-ship in Jamaica.

OPARE NAMED TO MLS TEAM OF THE WEEK Kofi Opare has been named to the MLS Team of the Week thanks to his Man-of-the-Match worthy performance against Toronto FC on Aug. 5. The defender gave United an early lead when he headed home a Lloyd Sam corner in the 6th minute. The goal was Opare's first of the season and first since May 13, 2015.

UNITED TRADE BOBBY BOSWELL United have acquired a third round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft from Atlanta United FC in exchange for veteran defender Bobby Boswell. Over two stints with United, Boswell made 198 league appearances (regular season and playoffs) for the club, scoring 10 goals and recording eight assists. The 34-year-old originally signed a developmental contract in 2005 and quickly established himself as a starter in his rookie season. Boswell is currently third for most regular season starts in league history (360) and is one of only three currently active players to make 350 career MLS starts.

UNITED TRADE LAMAR NEAGLEUnited have acquired a natural 2018 MLS SuperDraft fourth round pick from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for Lamar Neagle. The 30-year-old midfielder/forward made 53 appearances for the Black-and-Red (30 starts) since being acquired on Dec. 7, 2015 from Seattle. Neagle was United’s leading scorer last season with nine goals.

Lloyd Sam crossed an early corner kick in to Kofi Opare (6’), who headed in his first MLS goal since 2015. A 52nd-minute Steve Birnbaum own goal tied the game for Toronto FC, who were able to steal a point on the road, despite going up a man after a Lloyd Sam red card in the 44th minute.

LLOYD SAM RECORDS UNITED’S 75th ALL-TIME RED CARD After a 44th-minute red card in a 1-1 draw against Toronto on Aug. 5 at RFK Stadium, midfielder Lloyd Sam recorded United’s 75th all-time red card. 17 of those red cards, including Sam’s, were recorded in the first half—the Black-and-Red are 2-11-4 after recording red cards in the first half.
