1B1. General

7B1.1. Purpose of product numbering

Product numbers based on a standard set of criteria are an essential prerequisite for DP-assisted handling of business. They serve to provide a clear means of communication between customers, regional organizations, head office and production workshops with respect to: Preparation of quotations, selection and project

planning Processing of orders

Ordering Order acknowledgment Handling of products on stock Order processing in the dispatch points Delivery and dispatch Internal and external accounting

Reporting and planning Exchange of product master data Service and warranty.

1.2. Range of application

Product numbers are determined for the products of the manufacturing locations/dispatch points of the regional office manufacturing and service

centers of associated companies and, if applicable, products from other vendors

(including manufacture under license). marketed by Siemens AG in Germany and abroad. The products are: Hardware products (equipment, systems, plants,

devices etc.) Software products (operating systems, programming

systems, process systems, control systems etc.) Standardized services (e.g. courses, examinations,

building acceptance tests, standard wiring, installation services, standard project work, services)

Technical documentation (Instruction Manuals, equipment manuals, training documentation etc.).

1.3. Definition of the numbering systems

The most important numbering systems approved within Siemens AG are as follows: Machine-readable product designation (MLFB)

according to SN 01030 Siemens item number (SSN) according to SN 01001 Technical numbering system according to SN 01060

according SN1000 HUhttps://ccs.siemens.com/CCS/CCS_en/siemens_standards_en.html U

The MLFB numbering system is to be used in the sektors of Industry and Energy. Each product must only be identified within Siemens AG by one product number. If products and modules of one Group are also marketed by other Groups, the product number of the originally responsible Group is retained.

Group-internal numbering systems, e.g. factory drawing numbers, are not allowed in cross-group ordering/accounting (if necessary, numbering for spare parts in accordance with SN 01050).

1.5. Central Working Group (ZAG) MLFB

The "central working group for machine-readable product codes", or ZAG MLFB, is made up of numbering designees and representatives from the former divisions A&D, I&S, PG and PTD and is responsible for arranging the products into super, main, and sub-groups of the MLFB. Since February 2008, new sub-groups will also have the 4th digit of the MLFB authorized by the ZAG MLFB.

2B2. MLFB numbering system The MLFB is the Order No. of a product and, at the same time, the model/system designation. The model/system designation starts with the first position of the MLFB and at least comprises the data positions 1 to 3, but, at the most, the first block of the product number.

2.1. Numbering scheme

The machine-readable product designation (MLFB) at least consists of block 1 (7 digits) but, at the most, of 3 blocks (16 digits). Since June 2000 the first two blocks (12 digits) are necessary for newly released MLFB sub-groups. In DP processes, the order codes are managed in one or more fields. A maximum of 32 order codes are possible. For machine-based order processing, order codes must be specified according to the following model – see also section 2.4.3: The following meanings apply: A The letter space (alpha space) without "O" (for order codes ANA without "I" and "O") N Digit (number space) - Separator (hyphen) + Separator (plus) Z 2-digit mandatory code to identify "special designs"

Assigning an MLFB to a sub-group therefore encompasses the data spaces 1 to 4. Applications must be sent in writing to the responsible contact center. All MLFB keys must be approved by the responsible ZAG MLFB member. The centrally determined results are registered by the ZAG MLFB and published in the MLFB manual for SN 01030. UNoteU: MLFBs with 6 to 11 digits may still occur for older products. In addition to the MLFB, certain products have supplementary Order codes for further basic technical data, identified by "9" or "Z" within the MLFB, and/or special versions identified by "-Z" at the end of the number. The "ANA" Order code scheme applies to other basic technical data, and the "ANN" Order code scheme to special versions (see 2.3).

2.3. MLFB with Order codes

In many cases, products available in multiple versions cannot be fully identified using the 16 digits of the MLFB. It is possible to handle these products automatically, however, with the aid of "order codes", which are codes for the special designs. 2.3.1. Order codes for "Further basic technical data" (ANA)

"Technical Basic Specifications" refer to the technical features and characteristics that are already encoded in certain letters or digits of the productnumber. If you want a design that goes beyond this, an ID must be used for digits 7 through 16 according to the specification in the catalog.

33B2.3.2. Order codes for "Special designs" (A N N)

"Special designs" refers to further technical features that are not encoded in certain letters or digits of the product number – beyond the "technical basic specifications". When ordering, the identifier "-Z" must be added to the MLFB for "special designs". The order code is in the "ANN" format.

There are 2 types of order codes: Order codes for "Further technical basic specifications" A N A for the 16 digits and letters of the MLFB

and order codes for "special designs" A N N

additional technical specifications beyond the 16 digits and letters of the MLFB

"9" for a digit or "Z" for a letter The order code is in the "ANA" format. The first letter (alphabetic) specifies the corresponding data space in the MLFB.

2.3.3. Order codes requiring additional data ( A N Y ) or ( Y N N )

In some cases, a product version cannot be precisely technically defined in the catalog, for example the inscription on a measuring point label of recorders. However, the price for this version has been defined. The requested version – e.g. the exact inscription – still has to be specified in plain text. 2.3.4. Combination of Order codes

Combinations of "Other basic technical data" and various "Special versions" can be represented by stringing together Order codes in any sequence, where a "+" sign must be inserted between two Order codes, without leaving spaces in between.

In order to be able to access the PMD or to enable DP handling, Order codes must have the format

A N Y for "Further basic technical data" plus plain text, and

Y N N for "Special versions", plus plain text.

The separators " + " are data spaces. The number of order codes is not limited by the MLFB system, but it can be limited by DP processes, if applicable. It is recommended to put a blank space between the "-Z" and the first order code.

2.4. MLFB notation

It is permissible to interrupt block 1 using a gap (space) to make it easier to recognize the number, e.g. 3TF46 22. The space is taking into consideration in catalogs and price lists, but is left out when entering the number into the data processing system on a computer. If the number is written by hand in orders or correspondence, the MLFB should not contain any further spaces.

2.4.1. Catalog notation

If possible, the MLFB should be written completely in a catalog. Products having a wide range of versions should be composed in a classified manner as far as possible, i.e. certain product features should be assigned to the individual data positions (basic technical data). For clarity reasons and to save space, it is often useful to break down these classifying product numbers in the catalog into an MLFB group and one or more supplements. A supplement may also comprise several consecutive data positions. A supplement position is shown by a dot or a little box. Examples: The complete product number, when applied, must be formed in several stages by combining the MLFB group with the supplements in accordance with the catalog data. An MLFB whose supplement positions have not all been specified is incomplete and cannot be ordered. 2.4.2. Documentation notation

In orders, delivery notes, invoices etc., MLFBs, Order codes and any additional data in plain text are written in the following order: MLFB 1LA5 186-4AA69-Z Short Codes M1F+A11+Y54 Plaintext for Y54 Special paint RAL 7005

3B3. Principles for etablishing the MLFB 3.1. General

Technical criteria are decisive when assigning the product features and their characteristics to the data positions of the MLFB scheme. The function of a product is the prime consideration when defining the MLFB. The technical characteristics and their attributes in the catalog correspond to the ranking of the criteria in the data positions of the MLFB (4.1). If possible, the data particularly decisive for the price should also be coded as far as possible at the front of the MLFB. Any aspects which may be subject to change (e.g. organizational) must not be taking into account. The manufacturing plant does not form part of the product number. SN 37040 applies to the identification of the manufacturing plant on products. The product number must satisfy the requirements of personal handling and electronic data processing. The unambiguity and uniformity of the product numbers and the reserve available for new products are monitored centrally by the central working group ZAG MLFB.

For these reasons, no department may itself define or change any product numbers. In the event of faults, it must be expected that any MLFBs which have not been agreed upon will be changed!

3.2. MLFB for products manufactured abroad

Products which are manufactured abroad by a regional company, constructed under license or purchased from another vendor are assigned a product number according to the same rules as the original Siemens products. The following points apply in addition. 3.2.1. Characters reserved until now

The characters reserved until now: “0” at data position 4 “Y” at data position 9 and Order codes “I..” are released for normal use since 01.06.2006 The appointed MLFBs with these chareacters until now remains valid furthermore. 3.2.2. Identification of manufacturing plant

The manufacturing plant is not coded in the product number in the case of products manufactured abroad either, but is identified on the rating plate or product label in accordance with SN 37040.

3.3. Product numbers in the case of changed products

If a product is changed, the responsible parties referred to in Section 1.4 will check whether a new product number has to be defined or whether the previous number can be retained. It should be remembered that a change in the product number will, in many cases, require extensive changes to documents in the head office, regional organizations and at customers. The product number should therefore be retained if the product is fully replaceable with respect to functional and operating characteristics, reliability, installation conditions and interfaces (e.g. electrical connections). If any design changes affect the spare parts service of the product, the MLFB can still remain unchanged. If necessary, production numbers according or serial numbers will enable the function status or product status to be recognized or derived. For further details, please also refer to SN 10370 "Products and technical documents, exchangeability and condition". 3.4. Reuse of product numbers that have become free The responsible parties according to Section 1.4 decide on the reuse of a product number. Prerequisites are: The manufacture of the previous product has been

discontinued everywhere (also construction under license abroad)

Stocks have been used up The normal period for stocking spare parts has

expired 10 years must have passed since the MLFB has

become free. 3.5. Numbers parallel to the MLFB

In addition to the MLFB, the international article numbers (EAN; see also SN 01090-1) and the Universal Product Code (UPC; see also SN 01090-2) are permitted as well as the product-ID numbering systems which are generally required by external customers.

4B4. Issuance and introduction of the MLFBs 4.1. System for assigning the MLFB

The MLFB should be formed using a high degree of classification in conformance with the ranking of selected technical data, characteristics and attributes. The criteria decisive for the price should be coded as far as possible at the front of the MLFB. A classified structure means that the individual data positions are allocated certain product characteristics and attributes (basic technical data) in the sequence of their significance. When transposing the information to the MLFB positions, the number of available characters (numerical/alpha positions) must be taken into account in the existing number of versions. The significance of supplementary data positions within the MLFB must not contradict the meaning of previous data positions. Clear presentation in the catalog, in particular with respect to breakdown into the MLFB group and supplements, must be possible. The supplements are show in the sequence of data positions without any overlapping. 4.2. Assignment of the MLFBs taking into consideration SAP, FDB and catalogs

With the introduction of SAP, the so-called "Master material data" (e.g. for marketable products, modules, parts) can be recorded in SAP, i.e. adoption and updating of these data are carried out in SAP. Classifications are saved in SAP as configurable material (KMAT). The product master data is divided into core and supplemental sets. To ensure the uniform flow of SAP material master data and PMD and their depiction in catalogs, close cooperation of the responsible centers is required as early as the product development phase and right up to the release to sales. 4.3. Assignment time of MLFB

The MLFB should be assigned in good time by the responsible departments (see Section 1.4), or in coordination with them, i.e. already during the development phase (development agreement) of the product.

4.4. MLFB for products of modular design

An MLFB must be defined as a product number for every listed module. Racks or cabinets fitted with modules (constructional units) and combined module packages can be assigned their own MLFB in order to simplify ordering and processing. 4.5. MLFB for accessories and spare parts

In many main groups, the letter "X" is assigned at data position 3 for accessories, and the letter "Y" for spare parts. Wherever the existing reserve and selection logic permit, accessories and spare parts should be numbered in these subgroups. Otherwise the number "9" can be used for accessories and spare parts at the data position directly following the type designation (usually at the 5th position). 4.6. MLFB for Instruction Manuals and technical documents

Instruction Manuals must be numbered taking into account the numbering system (MLFB or SSN) to be applied. In the exA&D Group, this applies in part to all technical documents to be supplied, e.g. Instruction Manuals, equipment manuals, programming instructions etc. The Order No. is determined within the context of the product numbering system. 4.7. MLFB for special versions

An unambiguous order designation is required for electronic data processing of frequently ordered special versions of listed products (e.g. customer versions). It is then often useful to retain the product number of the normal version, and to use an Order code in accordance with Section 2.3 to identify the deviation. 4.8. Introduction of defined MLFB

When an MLFB is defined, the participating departments agree on its date of introduction. The date depends on: Availability of the products in PMD

(release for sale, release for delivery) Production of catalog/price list Production of Instruction Manuals

5B5. Application 5.1. Product number

When ordering, it is obligatory to specify the product number (full identification, also with additional ordering data according to Section 2 if applicable). The recipient of the order is not obliged to additionally check the product description for conformance with the product number. 5.2. Product description

The product description should lead to the product number (= Order No.) of the desired product. It consists of one or more blocks with a maximum of 31 characters each. In the case of products which have several versions, for which the MLFB has been defined as a main group and supplementary blocks, the product description is broken down into the "main group text" and texts for the supplementary positions. A maximum of 20 lines can be used for each block, but may be restricted by certain DP procedures. The product description shall be applicable for price lists, quotations, orders, order acknowledgments, dispatch documents, invoices, parts lists and technical documentation. 5.3. Standardization of product numbers

The conventions regarding the notation/storage form of the product number must be strictly observed for electronic handling of orders and access to databases. This can be assured by using the NORM standardization program. Further details can be found in the Siemens standard SN 01080. 5.4. Functional and constructional units without own product number

Functional and constructional units may exist for which it is inappropriate to assign a product number (e.g. one-off custom-specific configuration) or not feasible because of the complexity (e.g. plant, system). Constructional units of this kind can be described and offered in catalogs, but it is not possible to define a separate or combined Order No. For ordering purposes, the MLFBs of the individual assemblies constituting the requested (or planned) constructional unit must be specified item by item.

Conventions have been agreed upon to link up the individual items to permit the ordering, dispatch and accounting of such constructional units. These are published in the Siemens Logistics Lexicon (SLL) by CSP Mch: Central regulations and information Electronic business handling - Orders –

Identification for supply coherence.

6. PMD I IA/DT, I BT LV, I IS and Energy (in part) manage their products in PMD (Product Master Data). Product master data (product no., product description, prices, ORG-ID, etc.) are saved in PMD, which are made available to the user processes such as bids, configuration procedures, order handling processes and to the PMI Corporate Service and for preparing the Mall, CA01 and PMD on PC. The product master data encompass commercial and technical information. The PMD responsibilities were regulated in the A&D BV circular dated 28 Oct. 2005.
