Toronto Blue Jays Birthdays in January and February

On January 1, pitcher Neil Wagner celebrated turning 30 years old. Before being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2005, Neil attended North Dakota State University where he broke school records for career saves with 18. The Blue Jays signed Wagner during the 2012 offseason. This right-hander made 36 appearances out of the Blue Jays bullpen this season, while maintaining a 3.79 ERA.

NEIL WAGNER

On January 18, Blue Jay Brett Lawrie turned 24 years old. The Langley, British Columbia native has been with the Blue Jays since 2010 when he was traded to the team from the Milwaukee Brewers. Though he started the season on the DL, Brett returned to form and finished the season with a .254 batting average, 11 homers, 46 RBIs and nine steals.

Luis Perez celebrated turning 29 years old on January 20. Luis spent the 2013 season recovering from Tommy John surgery by rehabbing at the Blue Jays Minor League complex in Dunedin, but is looking forward to being healthy for the 2014 season. Tommy John surgery is a procedure that repairs an injured elbow ligament.

On January 4, outfielder Kevin Pillar turned 25 years old. Originally from West Hills, California, Kevin made his Major League debut on August 14, 2013, and recorded his first hit of his Major League career on August 21, 2013.

On February 9, one of the newest Blue Jays, catcher Dioner Navarro, will be celebrating his 30th birthday. Dioner signed with Toronto after playing one of his best seasons with the Cubs, where he hit a career-high 13 home runs. Navarro has played 10 seasons in the Majors, and is looking forward to playing in Toronto this season.

Ryan Goins will celebrate turning 26 years old on February 13. The Round Rock, Texas native was selected by the Blue Jays in the 4th round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft. Spending most of his season in Triple-A Buffalo, Goins joined the Blue Jays in late August and tied a franchise record by opening his career with an 8-game hitting streak.

Edwin Encarnacion turned 31 years old on January 7. Edwin had a strong start to the season, but it was unfortunately cut short when he needed surgery in September to remove cartilage from his injured wrist. Despite missing the endof the season, Edwin still finished the season with 36 home runs, 104 RBIs and7 stolen bases.

Spring Training Preview On February 16, Blue Jays pitchers and catchers report to Dunedin, Florida to begin Spring Training. During Spring Training, the Blue Jays play in the Florida Grapefruit League, against other Major League teams with facilities spread out across Florida. Dunedin has been the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays, as well as the home of the team’s minor league affiliate, the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Class A Florida State League, since their inception in 1977. The current ballpark opened in 1990 and has a capacity of 5,510 people.

For the 2014 season, the Blue Jays will be playing two of their exhibition games in Montreal, Quebec at Olympic Stadium.
