Editor’s Point – Why IIT for ENGINEERING?

July is the month of ADMISSIONS. There has been crisis for admissions to NURSERY and DU courses in Delhi where one

of the reasons is shortage of capacity, but ENGINEERING is lucky to have overcapacity in INDIA. The estimated number

of seats is over 15 Lakh in more than 3000 colleges. Choose a college that is close to an industrial cluster.

Don’t hanker around the name IIT; if someone is really serious to do B Tech, the success in engineering is not linked

with name of the institution alone. Of course, the quality of faculty, infrastructure and campus environment has a

positive contribution to personality development, confidence level and it helps in placement also.

Selection of BRANCH is a difficult decision. No one can predict the job situation after 4 years but even the person with

low marks at school level or lower rank in engineering college stands a chance, if he or she is serious about the

INDUSTRIAL training, visits, interaction with experts, SKILL development and is keen to learn BEYOND Syllabus. All these

need equal emphasis to that of the University Examination.

Company PROFILE – 2

Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) is a leading private sector company of India in technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing. With thrust on international business, its overseas earnings have grown significantly and it continues to grow with offices and manufacturing facilities in multiple countries. The organisation structure of L&T is built around multiple businesses serving the needs of different industries (click on the field to get more information)

Hydrocarbon, Power, Heavy Engineering, L&T Construction,

Electrical & Automation, Machinery & Industrial Products, Information Technology,

Railway Projects, Financial Services, and Shipbuilding

L&T was founded in the year 1938 by two Danish engineers, HENNING HOLCK-Larsen and SOREN KRISTIAN Toubro.

The interesting part of the story is that Larsen and Toubro were school-mates in Denmark. They were learning about

India in history class but would never have dreamt that one day they would create history in India.

Leaving comforts of Europe the two friends started their own operation in India representing Danish manufacturers

of dairy equipment. Their first office in Mumbai was so small that only one of the partners could use it at a time!

Germany's invasion of Denmark in 1940 stopped supplies of Danish products. With restriction on imports during the

Second World War, they were compelled to stand on their own feet and innovate and they started a small

workshop. They started manufacturing dairy equipment indigenously. With success of the products, L&T came to be

recognised as a reliable fabricator with high standards.

The war-time need to repair and refit ships offered L&T another opportunity that led to the formation of a new

company - Hilda Ltd. With two more repair and fabrication shops - the Company began to expand. During this period

the sudden exit of German engineers because of the War, the installation of soda ash plant of TATAS was stuck up.

This gave L&T a chance to enter the field of installation and commissioning, an area where their capability was well

respected and recognised. (The L&T story to be continued in next issue of UDYOG SANCHETANA)

It has been so enlightening to go through the News Letter …. I feel our students need to keep track of such vital information and mind stirring articles. The article on 'Nanotechnology' in June, 2014 issue is praiseworthy. I am passing on this information to all Faculty members as well as to the students of Engineering stream to go through the website and include in their routine to deliberate upon the issues raised and information furnished.
