LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The children of Kings Heath had better get set for a life in front of or behind the cameras.

Young Film Makers is bringing to South Birmingham the chance for children aged 8 to 16 to star in and make movies.

They can get their hands on professional cameras and with guidance from experienced filmmakers create, act in, direct and write their own films.

Young Film Makers have been running film schools for over 5 years and believe that children should be given the chance to learn and enjoy one of the most exciting and rewarding careers in the world.

They even allow you to try it first to see if you like it. It sounds like an opportunity not to be missed.

New heart for Kings HeathKings Heath has a new heart after a £660,000 project to create a village square.

Accompanied by musicians, drummers and choirs, the new square in Kings Heath was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Anita Ward, and the Bishop of Birmingham, the Rt Rev David Urquhart, on Saturday October 15.

The Village Square brings together three separate areas of ground into one beautiful oasis, a place for meeting and relaxing and where a regular programme of events and activities will take place. A cafe will open soon in the adjacent Welcome space. So come and join in -

5th November - Farmers Market 19th November - Christmas lights switch on.

Major features in the square include:

• A ‘bubble pavement’ water feature which symbolises refreshment, new life and Christian Baptism

• A paved labyrinth, designed by Simon Watkins of RGA, the artwork inserts for which were designed by artist Alison Ogle in consultation with local young people and community groups and which includes mosaic inserts and quotations on the theme of ‘Cherish your Life and Community’

• A paved Threshold/Swirl feature, which will spiral outward from a restored Edwardian lamppost at the outer corner of the square toward the centre of the labyrinth and in

Page 11: MKH Dec 2011

11

which is cut a poem by local poet Rosie Miles who was a finalist for this year’s Birmingham Poet laureate.

• A re-sited and renovated War memorial with seating

• 28 new trees and a new Landscaping and planting plan: members of the community have taken part in planting some of the shrubs, trees and bulbs.

During the opening ceremony, which was attended by MPs, Councillors and representatives from other local associations, the Bishop switched on the water feature and blessed the venue. Music and song were performed by the Kings Heath Brass Quintet; the Eritrean church and the Sing Live! choir.

Landscape architect and labyrinth designer Simon Watkins of RGA, and site construction supervisor Peter Smith of Trendgrey completed the labyrinth by the ceremonial laying of the final piece, a centre steel inlay circle.

The project has been masterminded by the All Saints Community Development Company, in collaboration with All Saints Parochial Church Council. The group secured a £430,000 grant for the square from the Big Lottery’s Community Spaces Fund, managed by Groundwork UK, £210,000 from Birmingham City Council and £20,000 from Kings Heath Centre Partnership

Vivien Thickett of the All Saints Community Development Company said: “It’s been hard work putting together such a complicated project but the results make it all worth while. We now have a beautiful square for all members of the community to enjoy.”

Bike recycling project moves up a gearBirmingham Bike Foundry has broken into the high street after a year operating out of a lock up in a music studio.

Birmingham Bike Foundry opened up shop at 1539 Pershore Road - Stirchley High Street. For just over a year Birmingham Bike Foundry have been working, with notable successes, towards building a stronger and more dynamic cycling community within the city. The Bike Foundry has built upon the normal services offered by a bike shop to offer a unique range of resources to Birmingham cyclists.

One of the principal activities of the business is bike recycling. Members of the public donate old and unwanted bikes to the Bike Foundry, whose mechanics expertly repair them, giving local people access to bikes that are both fairly priced and good quality.

Birmingham Bike Foundry also offers training courses which empower people to become independent in their life as a cyclist. Maintenance training ranges from basic repairs and safety checks to highly technical jobs such as wheel building. Sessions covering cycle skills are also available, enabling people to navigate complex roads to find a safe commuter route, and some to simply ride a bike for the first time!

The move to Stirchley represents the product of a years’ work from a very unique organization. This project will surely soon play an invaluable role in the local community, and the wider populace of Birmingham cyclists.

Friday night, takeaway nightThis is one of the guilty pleasures I look forward to at the end of the week, especially as Friday happens to be my most hectic day.

Last week I tried out one of the newest takeaways in town – the Bombay Rickshaw Company on Heathfield Road. Love the name! Firstly, they have done a fantastic job of refurbishing the premises in a clean contemporary style with a few tables and chairs, café style, a food display counter for samosas and bhajees etc, and smart spotless open kitchen.

Earlier in the day I popped in to pick up the menu to read at leisure with my other half during bath time (the kids that is not us). The menu is refreshingly simple, all on one page, with all the dishes you would expect from an Indian takeaway as well as some more unusual choices. And something I’ve not seen before – Tasty Tiffin Combos which are two smaller dishes instead of one main course to give you more variety.

The Rickshaw does deliver (not by actual rickshaw I think the food might get cold) but being impatient I nipped out after saying good night to my little ones to collect it myself while the plates were warming in the oven.

As always we ordered far more than we could possibly eat between the two of us, so with plates overflowing with delicious smelling food we began our well deserved Friday night wind down after a busy week.

So, we chose:

Starters – Tandoori Chicken and

Keema Pav (spiced mince served

on a crispy Indian fried bread)

Mains – Paneer Shashlik

and Chicken Jalfrezi and Lamb Dhansak Tiffin

Sides – Pilau rice, plain naan and tandoori roti

Page 17: MKH Dec 2011

17

The order was all correct and piping hot and tasted just lovely. The Tandoori Chicken starter was a large piece of chicken on the bone perfectly seasoned and really tasty. The Keema Pav was huge for a starter and (according to my other half) absolutely delicious. And having three mains between us was a real luxury because I don’t eat red meat so sharing a curry is always a bit boring for my husband who really enjoyed his Lamb Dhansak. The Chicken Jalfrezi was deliciously spicy and the sauce went really well with my Paneer too. Altogether a lovely meal with substantial left-overs for the next day.

If you are thinking of giving the Bombay Rickshaw Company a try then I can heartily recommend them. The take-away is run by Zubair of Kings Balti on York Road who has been delighting locals with his delicious food for eighteen years. And he follows in the footsteps of his father who opened Kings Heath’s first Indian restaurant in 1975.

Zubair is forging links with the local food producers and allotment holders to use locally sourced ingredients where possible. They are even planning to use herbs grown in the neighbouring community centre edible garden when they are in season. And they are going to be part of the Kings Heath Floral Trail 2012 with balti container flower displays.

For orders over £10 you can get free delivery within 3 miles or 10% discount on collection.

The Bombay Rickshaw Company is at:

2 Heathfield Road, Kings Heath, B14 7DB.

Women's Movement Playgroup Re-unionMore than 50 members of the Women’s Movement Playgroup – both ‘children’ and their parents met for an emotional reunion at All Saints Church Hall recently.

The group which ran for 36 years was set up by ambitious women whose stumbling block to a successful career was the need for adequate childcare. Members would look after each others children in groups so that they could balance work and child-rearing.

The reunion was attended mostly by locals who still live in Kings Heath but there were some people who came from as far away as Brighton to take part.

Local resident Richard Wainwright, a child of the 70s and one of the earliest children to be part of the playgroup went along and met up with one of his playmates and reminisced about the good old days.

The event was held to unveil three commemorative paving stones that form part of the newly created Kings Heath Village Square. So if you were part of this group and couldn’t make the reunion then you could go along and see if you can spot the name set in stone for years to come.

Keeping it local this ChristmasWhy not take some of the hassle out of Christmas at the same time as supporting your local high street this year?

Internet shopping is always hit and miss and you end up paying delivery charges on even the smallest items. The city centre is heaving and parking costs a small fortune.

On the other hand, Moseley and Kings Heath high streets are overflowing with delightful independent shops selling toys and gifts for all the family. Parking is inexpensive and if you live close enough you could even walk.

So, here is a whistle-stop tour of your local shops

Christmas Cards and wrapping paper

For a range of stunning cards and wrapping paper Pottery and Pieces has it all. You can also look in WH Smith and Birthdays in Kings Heath and all of the charity shops which have a good selection too.

Trees, wreaths and mistletoe

Contrasts the florist on Poplar Road always has loads of Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes and they also do wreaths and mistletoe. Make sure you don’t leave it too late; they always run out well before Christmas Eve.

Page 25: MKH Dec 2011

Babies and children

Togademus, a traditional toy shop, is a stunning new addition to the shops on Poplar Road, and Pottery and Pieces is a well established gift shop that has been stocking delightful gifts for your little ones for many years. Also Armadillo on Poplar Road has some lovely unusual and crafty gifts.

If you are looking for more mainstream gifts then there is always Argos and WH Smith. And for those on a budget and for stocking fillers there are lots of budget shops along Kings Heath High Street.

Teenagers

Often the hardest to buy for, if you’re not taking the safe route of cash or a gift token there’s always Game Point, various phone shops, and of course, Argos and WH Smith.

Her

People on Poplar Road always has something special for the lady in your life – if she’s 4 or 84! The Jewellery Stop a few doors down is an overflowing Aladdin’s cave of beautiful jewellery and accessories. A little further on is Armadillo for fair trade gifts and nip over to York Road where the Kitchen Garden Shop has some lovely things for the garden. Pottery and pieces in Moseley has a plethora of gifts to choose from.

Him

For a techno gift you’ve got Game Point and there are a couple of phone shops on the high street. Pottery and Pieces also has a good choice of things for him and don’t forget Polar Bear Records on York Road.

Food

Moseley and Kings Heath both have outstanding farmers markets selling local produce, and the Moseley one includes a craft and arts market in the one before Christmas for unusual handcrafted gifts. See the ‘what’s on’ page for dates.

Another must visit for Christmas is the independent cheese shop on York Road, Capeling & Co. The cheese enthusiast proprietor can tell you all about his cheeses and this is the perfect time of year to indulge in a really special cheese-board. Then there’s Maison Mayci in Poplar Road and on Moseley High Street for mouth-watering French pastries, tarts and bread.

So if you have read this far you must agree you have no excuse but to shop local this Christmas.

Winter Wonderland at Martineau GardensWrap up warm, pull on your outdoor boots and enjoy a walk around a winter wonderland at Martineau Gardens this month.

Lots of animals will be coming into the Gardens, as they look for shelter and forage for food to sustain them through the winter months. Food is provided for birds and there are several bird feeding areas. Take your binoculars (or borrow a pair) and enjoy a session in the bird hide. You can also borrow a guide to help identify different species who visit.

You can look out for tracks of nocturnal and shy animals in the mud or snow. Birds, foxes, badgers and other small mammals are always about looking for food. Younger visitors can follow the Explorers’ Trail – a new quiz which encourages every budding nature detective to look out for wildlife clues.
