So, how did you do?A month to go before the New Year begins!

How many of you remember the

theme of last year’s Rosh Hasha-

nah message? If you didn’t, (and, by the way, I had to look over it

again myself!) this paragraph might help jolt our memory:

“Rosh Hashanah is an annual return to what G-d wanted from us in the first place, to restore our souls. It’s about focusing on what we are doing in the moment, savoring the moment, reflecting on the challenges of the Unetaneh Tokef prayer. It is about stripping away the emails and the distractions, the busyness with which we fill our lives, thinking that if we are busy, it must be meaningful. But you know most of the time it’s just being busy. So this year let’s get rid of the busyness as much as we can. I know we live in a multi - tasking world and I can’t really say that we’re going to have a chance to roll the clock backward.

So, this year if you’re a parent, disconnect. Disconnect at least during dinner time, at least until the kids are asleep…Slow down!

Disconnect when you are out to lunch with a colleague. You move too fast.

Disconnect when you’re out to dinner with friends. Slow down.

Disconnect when you’re in a conversation with a friend. You move too fast.

Because Rosh Hashanah will come again and when you turn around when all that time passed you will ask, “What happened?”

My question to you is simple. How did you do this year? Did you find the time to slow down, to put the technology down and pay attention to the people in the world right in front of you?

When you receive this newsletter, it will be a month to go before we celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

If Rosh Hashana is about the birthday of the world, it is also about the birthday of our souls. Built into the creation story is the idea that if we are to be truly human, we need to renew and restore. Each of us has a month to revisit the past year, and even begin to make the changes now, that were asked of us last year.

Let’s begin that journey together.

Certain familiar

melodies start to

sneak into my head

this time of year. The changing color of

the leaves, the crisp bite in the air in the

evenings, the talk of school starting again

and the end of the summer, all have a sound

track to them, and it's the sound of those

High Holy Day melodies. It's undoubtedly

a Pavlovian response: the time of year and

everything that comes with it is inextrica-

bly linked with the music of Rosh Hashanah

and Yom Kippur in my subconscious.

It’s actually very comforting to return to

the same familiar tunes every year, like

seeing an old friend or visiting a place

from childhood. The difference is, while

the friends and the places inevitably

change with time, the music doesn't seem

to. While there certainly are some creative

and enterprising cantors, composers, and

musicians who come up with new melodies

for the Machzor, the Siddur, and other

sacred texts all the time, and many of these

new melodies are refreshing and delightful,

F r O M t H E D E S K O FC A N t O r S H A N A

many of us feel most comfortable with the

old melodies we've always known. Some of

these melodies are so old, they have been

labeled "MiSinai," from Sinai, that is, they

were supposedly given to Moses on Mount

Sinai along with the Ten Commandments!

Of course, there is no proving that, but it

certainly lends status and credibility to a

particularly evocative or favorite tune.

Music is meant to connect to our emotions.

As the words of the musically stirring

Unetane Tokef remind us: "On Rosh

Hashanah it is written, on Yom Kippur it

is sealed: who will live and who will die...

but Teshuvah, Tefillah, and Tzedakah lessen

the severity of the decree." Every year, we

are asked to do these three tasks to affirm

that our names will be sealed in the Book

of Life. Our internal voice of logic, or

inertia, or stubbornness, may wish to stamp

its little feet and ask, "But I did that last

year! Why must I do it again?" The Rabbis

knew what they were doing when they

established these as yearly activities: they

are skills, and like any skill, they require

regular practice. It is a skill to commit to

Teshuvah: the act of returning, making an

honest assessment of one's own behavior,

and asking what can be changed. It is

perhaps an even more challenging skill to

engage in Tefillah: prayer, looking inward,

seeking guidance and inspiration from a

Higher Power to truly change. And the skill

of Tzedakah, too often misunderstood as

charity, but truly meaning justice: to bring

about change for the better, to make an

effort to repair the damage we have done

to others, to attempt to create a more

balanced world in whatever way we can.

These are not easy tasks, but they are not

to be put off for another day or reserved

just for special occasions. We are reminded

by our texts, by our community that relies

on us, and by our holy music, given to us

as a gift every year by previous generations,

that these tasks are our holy responsibility.

May you and your families each be written

and sealed for a sweet new year in 5777!

F r O M Y O U r E X E C U t I V E D I r E C t O r …

the Answer My Friend Is Not Blowing in the Wind…

these days, it seems that it is very hard to focus on what is going on in our

lives and in our world. Maybe it is the heat, maybe the crazy elec-tion cycle we are in or just that we don’t know where we should be looking for answers. I heard on a radio interview with a novel-ist a great quote that could provide us with a means of focusing our attention.

E.L. Doctorow said, “Writing a novel is like driving at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” Wow, think about it. Dorothy had the ability all the time to go home (with her ruby red slippers), and we don’t have to search far and wide for answers or a means to focus. It is all right in front of us, all of the time.

Didn’t you hate when you were a kid and family asked, ”What do you want to be when you grow up?” or the dreaded question on job interviews, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

A kid wants to be a kid while they are young enough to enjoy it. A job seeker wants to be the best at the job at hand, not pining away for a shot at CEO.

Closer to home, our Board of Directors, our Officers, our Clergy and our Staff have all sorts of goals and plans for the future. Make no mistake, there is no time like today to set a path to the future. But the single most important focus of all of us (the leaders and staff of MJCBY) is YOU!! You the members of our kehillah (family) and your well-being is Number 1 for our plans and actions.

The services we lead, the programs we plan and present, the schools we provide for your children from toddler to teen, it is all there for you to benefit from and be an integral part of. To borrow from the Doctorow analogy, we are building our story – chapter by chapter, page by page, line by line and word by word with you, our MJCBY family, as our focus.

So during these days of Elul, leading up to the Days of Awe, jump into the car and join us on our trip. Be sustained by worship, be heartened by learning, be joyous in our celebrations and come together to help each other.

In this month’s Newsletter, see the names of our new officers for 2016-17 and reach out to them if you need help but also ask them how you can help as well. I know that they will be reaching out to you.

The answers my friends are out there but only as far as your headlights.

We look forward to having you share

in celebration of Zachary becoming a

Bar Mitzvah on the weekend of September

23-24, 2016.

Zachary is an Honor Society student at the

Long Valley Middle School. His recent trip

to Israel, with our extended family, helped

further connect him with the Land of Israel

and the Jewish people. While in Israel, he

did a service project, working to harvest

food for the poor together with Leket

Israel. He was also a host of shlichim from

Israel to his summer camp.

Zachary is a team player in Long Valley

football, lacrosse and basketball teams

– even playing on the inaugural Israel

Lacrosse team this summer in Denver,

Colorado. His individual accomplishments

include attaining a 2nd degree black

belt in Tae Kwon Do and playing musical

instruments. He is also interested in the

arts and sciences. He is compassionate

and caring and has wonderful relationships

with his siblings and family, schoolmates,

teammates and friends.

Naomi and Rick Byank

Alexandra, Victoria and Juliana

ZACHArY MICHAEL BYANK

Matthew and Julie Guss Schneider are

delighted to invite family, friends and

the congregation to celebrate as their

daughter, Sabrina Leigh, is called to the

Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, Sep-

tember 10.

Sabrina is a Dean’s List student in the

seventh grade at Gottesman RTW Academy

in Randolph. She is also an accomplished

tennis player. Sabrina loves the limelight.

One of her favorite things too is being

up on the stage singing and acting. Her

most recent performance was as Dorothy

in her middle school musical, The Wizard

of Oz. Sabrina also enjoys being a camper

at Camp Harlam in Pennsylvania, where

she recently spent her fourth summer. She

is thrilled that many of her close Harlam

friends will be sharing in her special day.

Sabrina has a sweet and patient way

about her, and she decided to put that

to good use at Lester Housing for her bat

mitzvah project. It was there that she

helped cheer up seniors by spending hours

with the residents, building puzzles with

them, singing with them and listening

to their interesting life stories. Sabrina

also volunteered at the Morristown Soup

Kitchen, serving lunches to the hungry.

She instantly felt grateful for the life that

she has and saw how important it is to

help others who are less fortunate.

We are very proud of, not only the

considerate and kind young adult that

Sabrina is, but of also how hard Sabrina

works, and how much she dedicates herself

to whatever project she chooses to take

on. Studying for her bat mitzvah was no

exception.

Our family would like to thank Cantor

Shana, Rabbi Nesson, Gerry Gross, Mia

Mutascio, the teachers at Gottesman RTW

Academy and her pre-school teachers at

Shalom Yeladim, where she began her

Jewish education. Sabrina couldn’t have

done this so well without all of your

support.

The Guss-Schneider family feels fortunate

to celebrate Sabrina with our many

family and friends, as well as with the

MJCBY LIFT FUND

Last year, the Board of Directors committed to install a lift in the

Eastern Entrance. The lift will make access from the parking lot and East-ern Entrance up to the main floor – the Sanctuary level – a seamless transition. We are pleased to let you know that – with generous donations

from the Wolff Family, Sisterhood and members of our com-munity – we are well on our way to making our facility fully accessible! With your help, the lift will be operational before High Holy Day services. Our congregational family will knock down the last obstacle to full accessibility and will make our synagogue building truly welcoming. Please join with us to help achieve this critical next step in MJCBY’s journey - L' dor vador and level to level. Please consider one of the following contribution categories and help us achieve this goal.

$5,000 and above, $3,600, $2,500, $1,800, $500, $360, $180

Your contribution may be mailed to the office. Please indicate Lift Fund.

If you would prefer to put your donation on a credit card, please call Gerry Gross at (973) 538-9292.
