Our success depends on the quality of our interactions and the clarity of our communication with others. Forming, nurturing and maintaining positive relationships is the ideal outcome of our time together at work, in class and at leisure. To this end, MizzouRec works tirelessly to provide an outstanding environment to cultivate relationships that last a lifetime.

relationships

Mizzourec has three additional guiding values.

These statements are mere words until we integrate them as values in our individual lives and reflect them in our institutional policies and practices. We pledge ourselves to make them effective in the very fabric of our lives, our community, and all our relationships with others, thereby enhancing the development of individuals and the well-being of society.

philanthropyMizzouRec has been given great gifts of support and wonderful resources from generations of students and administrators at MU. It is part of our culture to share appropriately and wisely with a variety of worthwhile causes and initiatives.

authenticityIn a world filled with brands, labels, expectations and images, it is important that each of us reserve time daily to connect to our true selves. Placing an organizational value on authenticity means that being genuine in our words and our deeds is important and a priority.

respectRespect for one’s self and for others is the foundation of honor and the basis of integrity. A hallmark of our community is respect — for the process by which we seek truths and for those who engage in that process. Such respect is essential for nurturing the free and open discourse, exploration, and creative expression that characterize a university. Respect results in dedication to individual as well as collective expression of truth and honesty. Respect is demonstrated by a commitment to act ethically, to welcome difference, and to engage in open exchange about both ideas and decisions.

discoveryLearning requires trust in the process of discovery. Discovery often fractures existing world views and requires acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Therefore, the university must support all of its members in the lifelong process that is both challenging and rewarding. As we seek greater understanding and wisdom, we also recognize that knowledge itself has boundaries — what we know is not all that is.

responsibilityA sense of responsibility requires careful reflection on one’s moral obligations. Being responsible imposes the duty on us and our university to make decisions by acknowledging the context and considering consequences, both intended and unintended, of any course of action. Being responsible requires us to be thoughtful stewards of resources — accountable to ourselves, each other, and the public we serve.

eXcellenceWe aspire to an excellence which is approached through diligent effort, both individual and collective. Pursuing excellence means being satisfied with no less than the highest goals we can envision. Pursuing excellence involves being informed by regional, national, and global standards, as well as our personal expectations. We recognize and accept the sacrifices, risks, and responsibilities involved in pursuing excellence, and so we celebrate each other’s successes. We commit ourselves to this process in an ethical and moral manner.

I FORGOT MY ID. CAN I GIVE YOU MY ID NUMBER? We must see a Mizzou Student ID, Mizzou Campus ID or MizzouRec-issued photo ID for every person who comes through the door. This is done to keep you and your identity safe. Double-check to make certain you have your ID it before you leave for the Rec, and put it right back in the same spot every time so you never have to miss a workout.

CAN I STUDENT ChARGE AT ThE REC? Yes, you sure can! You can student charge membership fees, classes and even spa services. Just make sure to check your monthly bill and know who is responsible for paying it.

I’M GETTING A WORkOUT IN AFTER CLASS. WhERE ShOULD I PUT MY STUFF? Store your stuff in one of the 96 lockers behind the Cardio Gallery, in a quarter locker outside the Jungle Gym or in a locker in the general locker rooms. (Make sure to bring a lock for the that one!) Don’t break a sweat looking for your stuff; lock it up and leave valuables at home!

I LOST SOMEThING. WhERE ShOULD I GO? All lost and found items are stored at Brewer Station. It’s the desk right across from the locker rooms. If you find something, bring it to Brewer or to the nearest Team Mizzou member.

DO I NEED TO MAkE A RESERVATION FOR MAT PILATES CLASSES? You only need to make reservations for any of our cycling or reformer Pilates classes. Those classes use machines, so space is limited. Stop by or give zouLIFE a call (573-884-6555) to make your reservation the day before or the day of. And if you like Pilates, give reformer a try!

I WANT TO hOST AN EVENT AT ThE REC. WhERE DO I START? There are quite a few ways! A good place to start is the FAQ we’ve put together on page 20. You can also go to mizzourec.com/events to find everything you need to know about how to use our space. Lastly, email us at [email protected] or call (573) 884-5600 to get in touch with us about your event.

CAN I BRING A GUEST?Short answer: Yes. longer answer: We love that people want to share their MizzouRec experiences with people close to them, and we want to help make that happen. However, we have the safety and security of our members in mind, and we can only accommodate guests at certain times of the week. Guests using the facility must be 18 years old and provide a photo ID. All other details can be found at mizzourec.com/guests. We also host Mizzou Family Nights several times per semester, which is an opportunity for your family (including children) to visit the Rec (see page 11).

WhAT IS YOUR ROLE WITh MIZZOU?

I’m a retired faculty member. I used to teach chemical engineering classes. I taught my first class here in February 1959.

hOW LONG hAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO ThE REC?

I started coming here in 1961. At that time there was just Brewer Fieldhouse. I remember my wife and I had basketball season tickets. A pair of reserved seats cost us $15. I remember I got to watch the first black player to ever be on the basketball team play. Other than that I used to always come to the Rec to play handball.

WhY DID YOU ChOOSE MIZZOUREC?

It’s convenient, I have an office on campus so I park my car, go to the office, have coffee with my friends, and then come to the Rec.

DESCRIBE SOME OF ThE ChANGES MIZZOUREC hAS MADE SINCE YOU’VE BEEN A MEMBER.

There were just huge amounts of construction. There were three

additions to Brewer Fieldhouse, and I was a

part of all three. I was on the Advisory Committee when they decided to make those additions to Brewer. I remember I got to turn the spade to shovel out dirt when they were putting in the foundation for the expansion. On the Advisory Committee, we served as advisors to the students as they developed plans for programs and additions. The students had a lot to do with it. My specific job was to represent retired faculty and staff like myself who were using the facilities. I just listened to what the students were asking for and was involved with helping develop facilities and programs for retirees.

WhAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS TO ThE ChANGES AS ThEY WERE BEING MADE?

I thought all of the programs were going really well. Students were using the facility, faculty members were using the facility, and you couldn’t have a better place to come exercise.

WhAT kIND OF AN IMPACT hAS MIZZOUREC hAD ON YOU?

It’s a terrific facility and I’m pleased to see the students use it as much as they do. I just enjoy exercising.

sIlveRmemBeRSTATUS

Our facilities have experienced major renovations over the years, and we’ve been fortunate to have so many loyal members who have stayed along for the ride. These members have all been a part of our community for at least 15 years.

Here’s a look at our transformation through their eyes.

WhAT IS YOUR ROLE WITh MIZZOU?

I’m a Mizzou alum, and now I volunteer at Mizzou. I’ve been a volunteer with the Alumni Association for more than 30 years, and I’m on the Governing Board. I was on the Boone County Chapter Board, serving as President twice, and I was President of the College of Arts and Science Alumni Group.

DESCRIBE SOME OF ThE ChANGES MIZZOUREC hAS MADE SINCE YOU’VE BEEN A MEMBER.

When I went to Mizzou, very little of what is here in MizzouRec today existed. I’m so happy that the students decided that it was worth the investment in their student fees to make these renovations happen.

WhY DID YOU ChOOSE MIZZOUREC?

I come here because of the people I get to see, the students I get to know. Particularly the students that work here at the Rec. They’re incredibly dedicated. The students, staff, and

administrators here are appealing to me. There are other places in town

to play racquetball, but I really like coming

here. I love to connect with students. I like being connected to the campus.

WhAT DO YOU DO WhEN YOU COME TO MIZZOUREC?

Normally I play racquetball with my friends and occasionally I’ll lift and stretch in order to work on certain muscle groups. Normally we get here between 5:30 and 6 in the morning and we’ll play until 7 or so Monday through Thursday. We’ve grown to a group of 6-8 people on different days of the week.

WhAT kEEPS YOU COMING BACk TO ThE REC?

The grief I’d get from my friends, for one. I’m working on correcting years of being too heavy and too lazy by trying to get more exercise. I’m the kind of person that really can’t exercise by himself - I’ve got to do something that’s social, so having this group of guys here keeps me on track. It helps me work on my fitness goals and my weight loss goals. In the last four years I’ve lost about 30 pounds.

WhAT IS YOUR ROLE WITh MIZZOU?

I’m an EY Teaching Scholar at the School of Accountancy.

hOW LONG hAVE YOU BEEN COMING TO MIZZOUREC?

20 years, two decades! I moved here from Texas and got here in 1994 and that’s when I started coming here, and man has it changed since then.

WhY DID YOU ChOOSE MIZZOUREC?

Well, it’s convenient. Cornell Hall, where I work, is just across the street, and I like to workout during the day so I can just walk over. Compared to some other gyms, it’s also a pretty good bargain.

WhAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS TO ThE RENOVATIONS AS ThEY WERE BEING MADE?

I was really excited about it. I thought it had a lot of potential and I couldn’t wait to see what they did with it. I thought it was fun and you could see it changing overtime. It was just an

exciting project, and the students voted to pay for it.

WhAT DOES BEING A MEMBER OF MIZZOUREC MEAN TO YOU?

It puts me in a group of people that have some of the same interests that I do. It’s a place where I know I can come and be comfortable. It gives me a wide variety of workout options, which is nice. To me, the best part is the students. I just love students. The staff is responsive, friendly.

WhAT kIND OF AN IMPACT hAS MIZZOUREC hAD ON YOU?

If I weren’t coming over here I wouldn’t be at the level of fitness that I am right now. It keeps me pretty fit when I put the effort in, and I’ve made a lot of friends here just by talking to people in the weight room. You start seeing the same faces everyday and you get to meet people across campus. I wish everybody would come over here and use this place. I think there are a lot of people that just don’t use it, and they don’t know what they’re missing.

By diANe gUSe dAHlMANN

Each semester, when the latest edition of MizzouRec NATION Magazine is released, we send out copies to a number of organizations and individuals. There is one person on the list whose name I added several years ago after we reconnected. Her name is Karen Kenyon. She was my junior year physical education teacher at Maine Township High School South, in Park Ridge, Illinois. After sending out the last NATION in early January, I received an enthusiastic email review from her. The subject line read, “WOW!!!” And in the text, “The magazine is terrific...I am so proud of you. Your coach and teacher, Karen.” This single message meant the world to me, coming from someone I looked up to in high school and whom I continue to admire and respect to this day.

Karen Kenyon’s email provided me with the inspiration for this article. This is an especially relevant topic as many incoming first-year students and parents will be exposed to the NATION for the first time during Mizzou Summer Welcome. Transitioning from secondary to the higher education world is significant. Those lessons we learned in high school helped pack the bags brought to campus today.

Maine South was a big, beautiful, new high school when I attended back in the day. Hillary Rodham was in the first graduating class, I graduated in the seventh commencement. The teachers were the best, the facilities were college-like, the curriculum was broad and varied. Junior year for girls physical education included several weeks in the sport of fencing. This was a big deal.

Maine South had a successful boys fencing team with many of the members being fellows I had known since grammar school. Besides the winning record of the team and the uniqueness of the sport, the team was coached by a woman. A boys team coached by a woman was virtually unheard of in the ‘60s, and is still rare today. The coach was Karen Kenyon; so it was an even bigger deal if you were assigned to her class for junior year girls PE. I recall my glee when

I saw the course and instructor assignments for the year ahead. Good fortune was mine, the assignment read: “Kenyon/GirlsPE.”

The class unit on fencing had started by mid-autumn. A small group of us truly took to the sport and excelled to the point where we were invited by Miss Kenyon to join the boys junior-varsity fencing team practice after school several days a week. Girls from other classes joined in along with a few freshmen and sophomores. It was a thrilling experience; drilling and practicing footwork, and of course, learning the etiquette of fencing.

As a point of reference: high school girls practicing any sport in the ‘60s, let alone practicing with boys, did not happen. Because we were girls we could not form a team according to the Illinois State High School Association rules and regulations. However, we could practice and compete as a individuals. With the guidance of Miss Kenyon, we joined the Amateur Fencers League of America and became eligible to compete as individuals.

By January, we were ready for our first meet and had earned the privilege of calling Miss Kenyon, “Coach.” All of the arrangements were made, including car-pooling from the suburbs to the University of Illinois-Chicago campus where the all-day Saturday meets were typically held. We competed with a variety of other young women in three different age groups, coming from other communities. Even though we were required to compete as individuals, we thought of ourselves as a team.

Throughout the late winter and early spring we competed, including a special invitational meet in Pleasant Plains, Illinois. Located downstate, 16 miles west of Springfield, Illinois, the Pleasant Plains

meet was an overnight event requiring signed permission slips. Six of us were on board. Coach Kenyon partnered with the local sponsoring fencing club for gym space, arranged host families for our lodging and personally provided transportation in her new station wagon. On the trip south along old Route 66, we sampled the menu at the Dixie Trucker’s Home, learned road trip lingo from each other like “pitstop” and began to give each other nicknames. The meet went well, although I don’t recall who came home with a trophy. I know that I did not. We were all so excited to be able to compete, that winning a trophy did not define the experience for us. On the road home, we began to talk about our competitive possibilities.

“Coach, if we can’t be a team,” we asked, “then can we be a club?” As she drove and listened to our chatter, she would quietly nod or provide a few words of advice. Always calm, always even-toned and never leading the conversation, she took in all that we had to say.

“Yes,” she replied, “but not a club from the high school.” Disappointed but not deflated, we kept up the spirited discussion. Ideas flew around the cabin of the car until we struck gold. Cautiously we tried a different angle. “Could we be a Park Ridge club, then?” taking the name of our town. Coach Kenyon smiled broadly as she savored our “Eureka!” moment. Never taking her eyes of the road, she said: “Yes, I think you could do that, if you wanted to be a community club.”

Her response ignited the chatter level to full-blast and the car filled with our excited voices. We had to have a name, something to call our club. In fencing, a touch on an opponent was a point. To have a touch scored on you was not in your favor. The girls in the car came up with the perfect name for a Chicagoland fencing club. We decided that we would be called “The Park Ridge Untouchables.”

At the next practice, the road trip girls brought the club idea and name to the others, and all were in full agreement. Coach Kenyon helped us find a reasonably priced t-shirt vendor who would print shirts for us with our club name. The Untouchables were on their way and spirits were high.

As my junior year came to close in early June, The Untouchables received the news that Coach Kenyon had been selected for a promotion. Beginning in the fall, our coach would become the girls physical education chairwoman at a rival high school. We were stunned. What would we do? With our champion leaving, who would make the arrangements and allow us to practice, and so forth?

Four of us decided we would go see the coach about the future of The Untouchables. So there we were in our red, one-piece gym suits and white tennis shoes, sort of huddled around her desk at the end of the day. “If you are leaving, then we aren’t going to fence anymore,” one of us stated, speaking for all of us. For some reason we thought

that this position was appropriate and that it might demonstrate our loyalty or perhaps, just maybe, convince her to stay.

Coach Kenyon looked up at us evenly and said in her matter-of-fact way, “You should be fencing because you love it, not because of the person coaching you.” That was that, a defining moment for each of us. We filed out, heads down without another word spoken.

Nothing more was said that day, but we found each other later and agreed that we would continue with our club and fence for the love of the sport. The Untouchables continued to compete in sanctioned meets. Coach Kenyon advised us from a distance while she continued to grow the sport at her new school. During my senior year, we welcomed some new freshmen recruits. As upperclassmen, we helped and coached them along in the sport we had grown to love.

Many of us continued to fence throughout high school and college. Those young high school girls grew into confident, capable women. The Untouchables alumnae ranks has doctors, Ph.Ds, health professionals, wives, award-winning teachers, mothers and grandmothers, and yes, even a higher education recreation professional. We learned how to determine what was important and how to pursue what we loved because we had a confident, capable and strong role model in Coach Kenyon. She didn’t call herself a mentor or role model and she probably didn’t see all of those unpaid hours of coaching us and traveling as a sacrifice. Coach Karen Kenyon taught us about what it meant to love the sport, and she led by example by fully engaging in life and pursuing her priorities with unbridled enthusiasm. She made a difference in our lives forever, with her confident presence, strength and grace. So much of who I am today is the result of Coach Kenyon and lessons learned in high school on the fencing strip.

As you unpack your bags from home, reflect on the good people who have influenced you and the lessons you have learned from them on your way here. Be certain to thank them and make them proud of all you have become, and of who you will be. •

At MizzouRec, we like to keep our facilities dressed to impress. This past academic year saw several major renovations, branding initiatives, and

equipment additions that elicited some “oohs and aahs” from members and the campus community. We’ve highlighted seven projects proudly completed this year.

the Mizzourec Fitness showcase was one of our most ambitious undertakings of the year, and led to the introduction of more than 30 pieces of the fitness industry’s newest and most elite equipment.

FACILITIES UPDATE

29NATION

The updates won’t stop here—MizzouRec already has further projects in mind for maintaining its top-notch facilities and achieving excellence in collegiate recreation. This summer, Brewer Board Room will be updated with higher-end technology, and the Membership Desk will be restructured.*

2 MizzouRec’s sport courts were given a glamorous makeover. Flooring on the 10 basketball courts in Brewer Fieldhouse and the North SRC was stripped, refinished and branded.

3 The West Entrance to the facility was renovated to allow for a smoother member check-in.

4 96 new convenience lockers were also installed in the Jungle Gym to prevent non-secured belongings from occupying the space.

5 The five hardwood racquet sport courts and the three fitness studios were also resurfaced.

6 Outdoors, Stankowski Field received a new scoreboard system. New fencing now lines the perimeter of the turf in order to protect the field against improper usage.

7 The Brewer Balcony Spirit Wall now looks over the courts in Brewer Fieldhouse, adding some Mizzou pride to the historic facility.

MizzouRec established five core functions in 2000 to clearly define the purpose and priorities of our department. They guide and support our vision

of aspiring to be the nation’s best and the world’s finest collegiate recreation organization. While originally presented in no particular order of priority, today our student staff and full-time staff members would agree that Team Mizzou is our most important core function.

CORE FUNCTIONS

31NATION

Recreation is one of the most staff-intensive fields in existence today. Because the field is based on people- to-people interaction, it requires people to operate and animate all of the programs, services and facilities. People are the most valuable asset and our highest priority at MizzouRec. We take great care in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, training, evaluating and developing our incredible student staff into full-fledged Team Mizzou members. Team Mizzou is the key to our success formula and our future.

Q: What was your role on Team Mizzou?

A: I started out as Frontline for

Membership, and then I was a Membership Specialist, and then later I became a Membership Lead. I was a member of Team Mizzou for three years.

Q: Were there any recognitions you received or leadership positions that you held while a part of Team Mizzou?

A: I was on Selection Team, so I got to conduct Team Mizzou

Recruitment Interviews. I was also on the Team Mizzou Advisory Council. I received the Emerging Leader award and I was a Team Mizzou Scholar for two years in a row, receiving two textbook scholarships.

Q: What were the greatest skills or life lessons that you gained from your Team Mizzou experience?

A: MizzouRec sponsored me to go to the University of Missouri Leadership Academy, so I definitely got a lot of professional development in working here as well. Those skills will help me so much no matter what I do later on in life.

Q: How do you hope to help Team Mizzou students?

A: A lot of new people were hired recently, and I’m just really looking forward to helping them have a great experience on Team Mizzou like I did. Working at the Rec definitely molded my undergrad experience because of all the opportunities it opened up for me. I’ve met so many great people, and I’m excited that I can help Team Mizzou students get involved and really take advantage of their time here.

Team Mizzou AlumniThe only thing better than having some of the best and brightest students on Team Mizzou is having them return to MizzouRec as members of our professional staff after they graduate.

Q: What was your role on Team Mizzou?

A: I was a team Mizzou member from October

2009 to August 2013. I did a variety of things, basically any job you could do. I worked in RecSports as an official and as a RecSports Lead, in Events as both a Specialist and Senior Specialist, and also in Brewer Station, Strength & Conditioning, and Membership.

Q: What was your favorite part about

being a member of Team Mizzou?

A: The friendships I made were a huge part of why I loved working at the Rec, but the biggest things were the wide range of experience I gained throughout my time in Frontline positions and then Lead positions. I knew people trusted me with lots of responsibility and that was a cool thing to have come from my bosses.

Q: Why did you want to be a member of MizzouRec’s Pro Staff?

A: I still have dedication and a sense of

loyalty to this organization that I thought could still benefit not only MizzouRec but also myself. This position is giving me great experience for anything I do in the future.

Q: What do you enjoy about being a member of the Pro Staff?

A: The added responsibility of the job - after you get used to it, is fun and challenging. Having to deal with problems on a daily basis keeps the job interesting because they are rarely the same issues.

Q: What was your role on Team Mizzou?

A: I started as a Tiger Swim Instructor in August

of 2006, and then cross-utilized into the Jungle Gym (February 2007). I also began working Aquatic Events (before there was a position for it!). I was promoted to a BAR Attendant in September 2007 (when it still existed in the Jungle Gym). I eventually got promoted to a Facility Lead for my last year and a half of service (March 2008). I was a Team

Mizzou member for three and a half years.

Q: What were the greatest skills or life lessons that you gained from your Team Mizzou experience?

A: I learned how to professionally handle stressful situations and to remain (somewhat) calm in the face of adverse situations.

Q: What was the transition from Team Mizzou to Pro Staff like?

A: REALLY HARD! I was the first person to directly transition from being a student

to Pro Staff, so I had to figure that out on my own in a way. I was still friends with everyone and knew almost everyone that worked at the Rec. So learning how to create that “professional barrier” was complicated…but I think I did ok.

Q: What do you enjoy about being a member of the Pro Staff?

A: I love interacting with my student staff and watching them grow as employees and people. That is the most rewarding part of my job.

The Spring Roar Celebration of Excellence is a MizzouRec tradition at the end

of each academic year in which Team Mizzou members are honored for their

service and dedication to the department. At this past May’s 15th annual Spring

Roar, Team Mizzou and Professional Staff members enjoyed dinner and each other’s

company at Reynolds Alumni Center. The event was red carpet-themed, complete

with a photo booth, candy bar, hors d’oeuvre table. Spring Roar is regularly hailed as

the highlight of the year for Team Mizzou members, and this year’s event certainly

didn’t disappoint.

Amanda Hobbs was so nervous during her first membership frontline shift that she fainted, but she’s come a long way. Rest assured – Amanda hasn’t fainted on the job since. In fact, Amanda’s positive attitude and dedication to spreading smiles around MizzouRec earned her the Stephanie Joseph Spirit Award at this year’s Spring Roar celebration. And that’s what Spring Roar is all about – recognizing Team Mizzou members for their personal growth and contributions of excellence to MizzouRec.

“The Stephanie Joseph Spirit Award honors our former Team Mizzou member who even throughout her battle with cancer kept a positive attitude,” Amanda says. “It’s an honor to know that I was able to keep a similar kind of positive attitude while at work. The Rec is a great place to go and just let stress leave. All you have to do is talk to people here and they make you feel so much better about yourself. And I truly believe that they do that not because

they have to, but because they want to. I really try to make the Rec the best part of someone’s day.”

In addition to recognizing outstanding Team Mizzou staff like Amanda, the 15th annual Spring Roar Celebration of Excellence made MizzouRec history. This year, MizzouRec awarded a total of $40,000 in tuition and fee scholarships to five Team Mizzou members. These are the first tuition and fee scholarships presented by the department, distributed in full and half ride increments. MizzouRec Director Diane Dahlmann says it has been a longtime dream of hers to be able to offer such substantial scholarships to exceptional Team Mizzou staff.

“I’ve waited 15 years to be able to announce these special scholarships,” Diane says. “We started the gift fund through the MU Development Office in the late ‘90s in hopes that gifts would begin to come in and the fund

By MiCHeAlA SOSBy

would grow to support scholarships like the ones we’ve been able to develop. Those hopes have been realized and now MizzouRec is in the position to change some lives and help make some dreams come true for our most outstanding Team Mizzou members.”

Kylie Karam has worked in Member Services for more than a year and a half as both a Frontline staff and a Membership Specialist. She received a $5,000 Team Mizzou Scholar award, and for her the scholarship means the chance to attend graduate school for physical therapy.

“I am an out of state student so undergraduate tuition costs are huge,” Kylie says. “Taking out loans can be a really scary thing as a young adult, and because of this scholarship not only will I not have to take out as big of a chunk, but also I am able to help fund graduate school- something that until now I didn’t know was going to be possible. To make a really long story short, this scholarship definitely just changed the rest of my life.”

Aaron Esterle was also recognized as a Team Mizzou Scholar at Spring Roar, receiving $10,000 toward his education. Aaron has been a Team Mizzou member for three years, working as a RecSports Lead and Brewer Station Frontline staff.

“The fact that the Rec honors outstanding individuals excel not only in their areas but also in the classroom is pretty awesome,” Aaron says. “[This scholarship] is just going to help me a lot. It’s going to be nice to not have to have student loans.”

Jordan Liekweg was awarded a $5,000 Team Mizzou Scholar award, and says that his fellow employees have been a big part of what’s made his three years at MizzouRec truly special. Jordan spent time as a Tiger Swim Instructor and Aquatic Events Frontline staff, and now works on MizzouRec’s Creative Team as a photographer.

“I absolutely love getting to see all of my friends at Roar,” Jordan says. “… If you want to find some of the best people at Mizzou, all you have to do is walk into the Rec and find someone wearing a nametag. This past Spring Roar was my third, and every year I become more impressed. I don’t know of any other employer that celebrates their staff as much as MizzouRec does.” •

This April, Elizabeth Brown got pedaling on an indoor cycling bike for the first time and Emily Russell wiggled her fingers through some kickboxing gloves. For many TigerX members like Elizabeth and Emily, April was the month of fitness challenge, consistency, and fresh workouts.

The Maximum Participation incentive program was launched to encourage members to follow a consistent workout regimen and explore the wide range of TigerX class offerings. Elizabeth and Emily discovered a newfound love for TigerX classes beyond those they attend normally. Elizabeth plans to continue taking Cycling classes, and Emily plans to participate in Pilates and Kickboxing classes more regularly.

Maximum Participation is also the philosophy of MizzouRec. “I started the program because I really wanted people to embrace MizzouRec’s philosophy of maximum participation,” Fitness Coordinator Pangku Moua says. “A lot of people find their niche within a certain kind of TigerX class, and that’s fine, but I wanted to encourage them and give them the opportunity to branch out and try new ones … April is a busy month and I also thought the program would help people stay engaged and know that their fitness goals don’t have to stop after spring break.”

Members who completed a total of 16 classes within the 30 days of the program were rewarded with a TigerX tumbler or drawstring bag.

“I was actually really surprised the Rec didn’t do a program like this sooner,” Elizabeth says. “It’s great. You get to basically pick which classes you want to take. You get to pick when and where, it’s all on you. You don’t have to finish, it’s just a great way to explore what TigerX has to offer. No pressure or anything, but it’s probably nice to get a TigerX bag or a tumbler that says ‘Hey, I did this.’”

“I feel really good after completing the program,” Emily adds. “My friends kept making fun of me saying, ‘It’s only for a tumbler.’ For me it was more about knowing that I met my goal and did all of the classes within that time period. Just knowing that I did it gave me a feeling of accomplishment.”

Both Emily and Elizabeth say they enjoy TigerX’s energetic group setting because it motivates them and provides them with structure. In the future, Pangku hopes to implement another incentive program like Maximum Participation into the TigerX curriculum.

“[TigerX] definitely gives you structure, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing or you’ve never worked out before,” Elizabeth says. “It gives you a plan for which muscles your going to target and helps you switch it up. I would always just go and run on the track, which was great, but I wasn’t always focusing on certain trouble areas that I wanted to target. Especially if you have a semester pass, it allows you to customize your workout.” •

Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball represents the University of Missouri in the Central Intercollegiate Division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. The team concluded this past year’s season with a fourth place finish at the National Tournament, the best outcome in program history. Over the years MWB has continued

to mature into a prestigious and competitive program, with more and more recruits considering Mizzou. The program also maintains a high level of academic excellence and continually produces true student athletes who are competitive both on the court and in the classroom. In addition to the team’s own training, MWB players and coaches recognize the importance of giving back to the community.

Each year the program hosts the Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball Camp, which welcomes men and women ages 12-19 with a permanent disability of the lower extremity to learn fundamental skill development and strategies in team play. With an array of leadership, academic and athletic opportunities, the MWB program contributes to the high standard of excellence here at Mizzou.

Getting involved on campus doesn’t have to be difficult, and RecSports is a great place to start. RecSports is MizzouRec’s intramural-style team sports program that is all about fun, teamwork, and competition. RecSports is a great outlet for building camaraderie and competing for bragging rights

within your residence hall, Greek chapter, campus organization, or group of friends. There are a variety of team sports available through RecSports, including Flag Football, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Racquetball, Water Polo, Wheelchair Basketball, and Kickball. Every RecSports event provides a fun and safe environment for competitive recreational activity. Players

may compete on one Men’s or Women’s Open team and one Co-Rec team for each sport per season, and members of Greek Life organizations may also participate in one Men’s or Women’s Greek team for each sport per season. Students also have the opportunity to become a RecSports official through Team Mizzou.

RECSPORTS

mizzourec supports team building and personal growth. As an organization that champions team building and personal growth, MizzouRec recognizes the importance of sports and competition as a core

function that advances positive interaction among students. Through the implementation of meaningful programs such as Club Sports, RecSports,

and Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball, MizzouRec strives to foster the kind of athleticism and competition that value challenge above victory and teamwork

above conquest. Above all, MizzouRec aims to provide a fun and safe environment for sports and competition so that it may contribute to the enrichment of student lives

and a cohesive student body.

MizzouRec’s Club Sports program is your key to a fun and competitive sports and team-building environment. All of MizzouRec’s Club Sports are student-led organizations that travel to compete against other collegiate recreation teams from around the nation. Though many of these teams are competitive, some are also

instructional in nature. Club Sports has plenty of sports and activities to choose from – everything from Quidditch, Waterski and Wakeboard, and Paintball to Basketball, Volleyball, and Lacrosse. All of these clubs comprise the Mizzou Club Sports Federation (MCSF), which seeks to develop student leadership, promote student participation in various physical and athletic activities,

promote healthy lifestyles, and create a community atmosphere between clubs. Participating in Club Sports is a great option if you’re looking to try something new, or if you want to maintain a competitive connection with a sport while in college. Club Sports are a fantastic way to get involved on campus and meet people who share a common interest.

Ask Eric Martin, Jamie Blankinship, or Kaleb Kasitz what makes the Mizzou Club Wakeboard and Waterski team special and they’ll all cite the team’s likeness to a big non-biological family. All three of them joined the team as freshmen and haven’t gotten out of the water since. Eric was last year’s Club President, Jamie is this year’s Club Vice President, and Kaleb is this year’s Club Treasurer.

“You immediately get the sense that we’re a close-knit family that hangs out a lot,” Eric says. “… These are the people that I spend all my summers with, the people I see on campus, and the people I hang out with even when I’m not waterskiing.”

But the club always loves adopting new people into the family. Over the past four years, the team has gone from having less than 10 members to having more than 30 this past spring semester. Eric, Jamie, and Kaleb all stress that no experience is necessary— zero, none, zilch.

“We don’t even require that you know how to swim,” Kaleb says. “That’s what life jackets are for, they float. We have plenty of equipment that’s really easy to learn on and we have plenty of people who can coach you through it.”

“This year we had seven students who had never water skied and two who didn’t know how to swim,” Eric adds, “so we got them life jackets and made sure they were safe, and by the end of the semester they had all competed in a tournament. We’re going to teach you no matter what your ski level is at. If you’ve been skiing your whole life, great— we’ve got tips for you, and if you’ve never been on the water, great— we’ve got someone who will teach you. I think the club took a really big turn when it started pulling in people who just wanted to learn.”

As a MizzouRec Club Sport, the team travels across the Midwest to compete against other collegiate Club Sports teams. Forget staying in a hotel—this club is all about the outdoors, so while at tournaments, members choose to camp out on the lake instead.

“We get to the tournament site and we set up camp,” Jamie says, “and it’s fun because we compete against the same schools each weekend so we really get to know the students that are part of teams from those schools. It’s like we all go to the same school, that’s how much we see each other. We get up early on Saturday, ski until the sun goes down, and then we’ll all go out to eat together. Then at night there’s a bon fire and everyone just hangs out together.”

WATeR sKI WAkEBOARD micheala sosby

49NATION 49natIon

“Once the sun goes down, you’re just camping out with a bunch of your friends,” Kaleb adds, “and everyone feels included because everyone water skis.”

Since expanding its membership, the team has enjoyed some unprecedented successes. The team was named last year’s MizzouRec “Club Sport of the Year” and was promoted to a Tier 1 Club Sport ranking, allowing the team to receive more substantial funding. The club also competed at Regionals for the first time in its history this past fall.

Members of the club pay between $50-$80 each semester, and Jamie says the team does plenty of fundraising in order to keep dues low. The club’s fundraisers include hosting a tournament each year, organizing 5K races, sending letters home to family and friends, and having “Flapjack Frenzy” and “Donut Days” in Speaker’s Circle, where the team serves reasonably-priced pancakes or donuts and coffee to passerby.

The club even raised enough money last year to fund the purchase of its own boat, which it uses during team practices on the Osage River or at Flat Branch Lake. Eric jokes that it’s not hard to get people to show up to practices and tournaments because “it’s not hard to talk people into hanging out on the water on a boat in the sunshine.”

Club members still like to hang out with each other even when they aren’t clad in life jackets and wet suits. Jamie lives in what the club calls the “Ski House,” where Kaleb says there is “basically an open invitation for the team to come hang out anytime.” The club also has Sand Volleyball and Soccer RecSports teams. However, Jamie assures anyone who has ever seen them play that they are “much better at waterskiing than at RecSports.”

“All of a sudden I just felt really connected to the campus. It’s just a really big, fun, loving group of people,” Jamie says. “Whenever there isn’t a tournament, there’s always a group of us that will get together and do something fun. We have our meetings on Monday nights and afterwards we always go hang out downtown. We do a lot of outside bonding outside of practices and competitions.”

Eric, Jamie, and Kaleb all assert that joining the Mizzou Club Waterski and Wakeboard team was one of the best decisions they’ve made here at Mizzou. More than anything, they hope to help other students grow to love water sports as much as they do.

“I’ve had five or six people tell me that they would have transferred away from Mizzou and just gone to a community college close to home had it not been for the Waterski and Wakeboard [club],” Eric says. “Once people join our team, they realize that they don’t necessarily have to go home all the time to see their family because they also have one here.” •

there Are three events At club wAterski & wAkeboArd coMpetitions. The club gives team members the opportunity to compete and train for any and all events they like.

sLALom: The Slalom event kicks off each competition in the morning when the water is calm. It’s like downhill snow skiing except in the water. The boat moves along a straight path in the water and to the left and right of the skier are 3 buoys on each side. The skier attempts to navigate on the outside of the buoys. Points are awarded based on the number of buoys successfully maneuvered, the speed of the boat, and the shortness of the rope that connects the skier to the boat.

trick: Competitors have 20 seconds to complete as many tricks as they can on either water skis or a wakeboard. Judges on shore or on the boat observe and award points based on difficulty of the tricks whether or not the tricks were completed. Competitors can use a wakeboard instead of water skis during this event, but points are deducted from their scores.

JumP: Skiers wear longer skis and the boat directs them towards a 5-foot ramp going 35 mph or slower. Points are awarded based on the successful landing of the jump and the distance covered between the ramp and the landing point. •

sTATe oF THe NATIoNSuccess breeds success— or so it seems at Mizzourec.

The team has had a rewarding and productive year developing

new programs, new opportunities and new partnerships. At

the top of the list, the MizzouRec Fitness Showcase debuted

in January with an enthusiastic response. We started the

showcase concept with a simple question: “What can we do to

enhance the fitness experience for our members in this space?”

This question coupled with a special event engineered

courtesy of our partners at OrthoTech Sports Medical

Equipment, Inc. led the way to an answer. Orthotech arranged

to debut the Star Trac VersaClimber at MizzouRec. It was a hit

with our members. Not only did they get a brand-new kind of

cardio experience, but they now had bragging rights that come

with being among the first in the world to try the latest offering

from Star Trac. Well, before any other campus, at least.

As more pieces of cardio equipment arrived, we decided to

approach installation differently from the way we had been.

Rather than rotating new pieces of equipment into the mix with

those already on the floor, we looked at ways to highlight the

new units.

An idea formed in short order: what if we shaped existing

space into a two-tiered stage or showcase to feature our

newest acquisitions? In no time at all, a design was drawn up

and construction on the showcase started. By the middle of

January, the showcase was operational. A sign and flat screen

panels were added with more signage to come. The space

continues to evolve. To kick up the experience, the showcase

will feature pre-production test pieces of equipment from our

new partners Star Trac, Octane Fitness and FreeMotion.

The MizzouRec Fitness Showcase started with a question

about how to enhance member experiences, and has quickly

evolved into one of our most innovative features. We’re leading

the pack again.
