Laphroaig 10 year old (G) Islay £3.60 The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper/chilli. Finish is Big and drying, as the savoury, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.

Oban 14 year old (D) Highlands £3.60 Notes of citrus with smooth sweetness. The smoke wafts with notes of seaweed. The oak is quite rich with grist and cereal and malt. The finish is of good length with fruit and dry oak.

Macallan Gold (D) Speyside £3.60 Sweet notes of toffee and custard tarts balanced by some fresh green-apple skin. Cinnamon, raisins, baked apples, panna cotta. Quite rich and weighty. Smooth, rich and clean.

Balvenie Doublewood 12 year old (E) Speyside £3.60 Initially burst of rich sherry and red apple, quickly dried with lightly spiced and smoky oak, beautifully balanced with stewed fruit and ginger bread.
