Sam: Excuse me, is this seat free?

Morgan: Sure. Oh, hi. You’re the new exchange student, aren’t you?

Sam: Yes, I am. I started last week.

Morgan: Right. Er … I’m Morgan.

Sam: Cool! I’m Sam.

Morgan: Er, do you mind if I ask you a few questions, Sam? You see, er … you come from Canada, don’t you?

Sam: No, I don’t. I come from New York, but we lived in Canada for two years.

Morgan: Ah, I see. That’s cool. You see, my family are thinking of visiting North America next year. So, you can tell me about the USA and Canada, can’t you?

Sam: Yes, I can. Well, I can try.

Morgan: So, you’re from New York. That’s the capital of the USA, isn’t it?

Sam: No, it isn’t, although lots of people think that! Washington DC’s the capital.

Morgan: Oh, yeah, right. I remember now. And Toronto isn’t the capital of Canada, is it? I think Montreal is the capital, isn’t it?

Sam: No, it isn’t. Toronto’s the biggest city, but Ottawa’s the capital. You don’t know much about North America, do you?!

Morgan: No, I don’t. That’s why I want to visit. Now, which is bigger: Canada or the United States?

Sam: Well, in terms of size, Canada’s bigger. In fact it’s the second biggest country in the world. Only Russia is bigger.

Morgan: Wow, but the USA’s big too – there are 50 states, aren’t there?

Sam: Yeah, there are. The USA is the third biggest country, after Russia and Canada.

Morgan: Right. We learned about the States in Geography last week. The USA has got a much bigger population than Canada, hasn’t it?

Sam: Yes, it has. About ten times as big. In fact, Canada’s population is really small, only about 35 million people live there.

Morgan: Sounds a lot to me!

Sam: Well, it isn’t … 35 million is much lower than some European countries. For example, Italy’s population is over 60 million – that’s nearly double the population of Canada and Italy is much smaller.

Morgan: That’s amazing. Now, most people in Canada speak English and French, don’t they?

Sam: No, not really. About 70% of the population speaks English and about 30% speaks French. Most of the French speakers speak English, but most of the English Canadians don’t speak French.

Morgan: Oh, I see. So, if we start our trip in Vancouver, we won’t have to speak French there, will we?

Sam: No, you won’t! In fact, in Vancouver the two most common languages are English and Chinese. Tons of people from China live there.

Morgan: Wow! That’s good. I love Chinese food!

Sam: So, you’re going to start your trip in Vancouver. Well, that’s a great city.

Morgan: Yes. My dad wants to go skiing there.

Sam: But if your dad wants to go skiing, you should go to the Rocky Mountains.

Morgan: Oh, but Vancouver is near the Rocky Mountains, isn’t it?

Sam: Well, it depends what you mean by near … it’s about 500 miles from Vancouver to the Rockies – to the Canadian Rockies, that is. It’s much farther to the US Rockies, of course.

Morgan: Oh, that’s a long way! But … the Rockies aren’t in the States, are they?

Sam: Yes, they are. They stretch all the way from New Mexico in the US to British Columbia in Canada. They’re about three thousand miles long – I think.

Morgan: Wow! Three thousand miles – that’s huge!

Morgan: Oh … you don’t need to get off the bus yet, do you? You see … I’ve got a couple more questions.

Sam: No, I don’t. It’s ne. I get off at the next stop.

Morgan: Tell me about sport. I’d really like to go and see some sport while we’re there – some baseball, for example.

Sam: Well, you won’t see a lot of baseball in Canada, but you could go and see an ice hockey game? It’s really popular. In fact, ice hockey is the most popular sport in Canada.

Morgan: Hmm. I’m not really interested in ice hockey. Maybe we could see some baseball in the USA. It’s the most popular sport in the States, isn’t it?

Sam: Yes, it is.

Morgan: Right, so if we drive down to California – to San Francisco – from Vancouver, we could see a baseball match there, couldn’t we?

Sam: I guess you could, Morgan, but it’s about 800 miles from Vancouver to San Francisco, you know!

Morgan: Wow! What a long way! I didn’t learn that in Geography! Oh, this is your stop … well, thanks a lot. That was really useful.

Sam: That’s OK, Morgan, any time.

Morgan: You have different words for lots of things, don’t you?

Sam: That’s right. We North Americans use lots of words that you guys in Britain don’t use. For example, in the US we say ‘elevator’, but you say ‘lift’.

Morgan: Oh yes, that’s right. And you say ‘sidewalk’ when we say ‘pavement’, don’t you?

Sam: Yeah – and in North American English, we say ‘subway’, but in Britain you say … oh what do you say?

Morgan: Underground – we say ‘underground’. Oh, I know another one – erm, the American word for ‘ lm’ is ‘movie’, isn’t it?

Sam: That’s right, and for us, pants are what you call ‘trousers’.

Morgan: Yeah, that’s a funny one for us! How many more can we think of?

Sam: Oh – I know! This is an easy one: in the US we say ‘soccer’ instead of football.

Morgan: Oh, right – soccer. And football is American football. I remember now.

Sam: And another one – you say ‘ at’ and we say ‘apartment’. Oh, and we say ‘garbage’, but you say ‘rubbish’ …

Morgan: OK – one more! You North Americans say ‘cookies’, but we say ‘biscuits’ .

Sam: And another one is what I call an ‘eraser’ and you call a ‘rubber’.

Morgan: That’s true – and we say ‘sweets’ but you say …

Sam: … candy!

Morgan: Wow – how do we understand each other? It’s the same language, but so many things are different in the States and in Canada!

Sam: Yeah, but the Canadians aren’t as different as the Americans. I mean, not so different from the British. They spell lots of words the same way as you do – words like colour, for example. In the US, color doesn’t have a ‘u’, but in Canada and Britain it does …

Morgan: Oh yeah? I didn’t know that. Tell me some more words that have different spellings …

I’m sure you all know about the novel that I chose. It’s called Robinson Crusoe and it’s by an author called Daniel Defoe. He wrote it in about 1719. Robinson Crusoe is a really long novel, but the story is in three main parts. I’m going to talk about the three parts.

The fi rst part is everything that happens before Crusoe gets to the desert island. He comes from a rich family in the city of York in the north of England and his father wants him to study Law. At fi rst Crusoe tries to do what his dad wants, but he’s interested in adventure and he wants to go to sea. In the end, he gets on a ship that’s sailing to London and he starts his life of adventure.

On one sea trip he nearly dies in a storm, then on the next one he makes some money selling things. When he’s on a voyage to Africa, some pirates capture his ship and he becomes a slave. However, he escapes to Brazil and he buys a sugar plantation there and makes lots of money. After this, he sails back to West Africa for business and he gets shipwrecked in the Caribbean and he fi nds himself on a desert island.

The second part of the novel is about Crusoe’s life on the island. It’s my favourite part. It tells the story of how he survives and what he does there.

He builds three buildings: his fi rst shelter, his country home on the opposite side of the island and his ‘fortifi cation’, as he calls it, for his guns and stuff.

When he lands on the island, he makes a cross and he carves the date on it. Then he makes a mark on it every day so that he can always work out what day it is. He also keeps a diary of everything he does.

After a while he feels quite happy about being on the island, and he calls himself the ‘king’. He trains a pet parrot, takes a goat as a pet and teaches himself how to make baskets, bread and pots.

He wants to try and fi nd other islands, so he cuts down a huge tree and builds a canoe, but it’s too big and heavy to get to the sea. So then he builds a raft. He rows around the island on it, but he nearly dies when a huge wave hits him, so he gives up on that idea too. After that he just stays on the island and lives happily … for twenty-six years!

Then one day he sees a footprint on the beach and he understands that he isn’t alone on the island. He’s really shocked, especially when he discovers that the other people there are cannibals!

First he hides from the cannibals and then he fi ghts them and he rescues a man from them. The man is really grateful – of course – and he becomes Crusoe’s helper. The day when this happens is a Friday, so Crusoe calls the man Friday and he teaches him to speak English.

After this it all gets rather complicated to explain, but basically, an English boat lands on the island. There’s a problem between the men and the captain. Crusoe helps them to solve the problem and they agree to take him and Friday to Europe.

This is when the third part of the novel starts: with Crusoe’s trip back to England. When Crusoe gets back to London, he discovers that he’s rich because of his sugar plantations in Brazil and he gets married. Right at the end, eight years after sailing back to England, Crusoe sails on another ship and he visits his desert island again. Lots of Spanish people are living there and it’s very different.

When you fi nish the novel, you wish there was another one with more stories of Crusoe’s adventures, but Daniel Defoe didn’t write one.

That’s it, then. Thanks for listening. Has anyone got any questions?
