Introduction.
Mityana Uganda Charity is a Christian Charity Non-Governmental Organisation that works to improve
the standard of Living and Quality of Life of the people of Mityana and the surrounding districts of
Mubende, Kiboga, Kyankwanzi and Gomba. The Charity was founded by Jean Ajin in 1995 and since
then a number of developments have been registered. We thank Rev Derek Burden, Jean Ajin, Ann
Rosemary Potts (Nabukenya) and the other founder members for the creation of this great institution.
The organisation was later egistered as a company limited by guarantee in 2008.
The Charity is glad to celebrate a number of achievements registered in the previous years, and I wish
to inform us that this is due to a highly committed and self-motivated staff team, we were able to
expand our coverage to the 4th
district (Kyankwanzi) in addition to Mityana, Mubende and Kiboga
districts and our donors and beneficiaries have commended the quality of services we provide.
Before I present the key highlights of the Charity outputs in the past period, allow me in a special way
recognize the B.O.D, Charity Staff and the various committees who have worked tirelessly to ensure
that Mityana Uganda Charity ably contributes to the National goal of Eradicating Poverty and fighting
illiteracy in the National strategic plan 2011/2015

- New Life projects- Livelihood projects, (Lwankuba Farm)
- Prison and free Legal Aid services,

The Charity entirely depends on donations from its sister Organization Mityana UK Charity. In the year
2012, there was an increase in the financial donations received from Mityana UK Charity of £205,541
compared to £188,778 received in 2011 from the same source.
A. Services and Projects
1) Sponsorship Project
Mityana Charity among its core programs continued to provide free education sponsorships to Vulnerable
Individuals throughout the year 2012. This was the first project for the Charity after Ms. Jean Ajin started it in
1995. The program comprises of services that seek to mitigate the impact of illiteracy and its negative
effects to the people of Mityana and its surrounding.
The project started with only 06 primary pupils in 1995 and in 2012 the number had increased to 204
sponsored children per year. 122 (Boys 62 & Girls 60) Children were supported in primary, 61 (Female
25 and Male 36) in post primary (Secondary) and 21 (Female 06 and Male 15) were supported at
Higher Institutions of Learning including Vocational training. A cumulative of 250 children have
so far benefited from the project since its inception. All the above sponsored children were
supported with both School fees and scholastic materials and on top received free medical services at
our selected Health/clinic Centres in Mityana.
Among other benefits, the sponsored children participated in a study tour to Uganda Wild Life
Education Centre – Entebbe, Holiday workshops, Home visits and Art & Craft classes.
2) Free Education Project - Nabukenya Primary School
Nabukenya Primary School is one of the projects for Mityana Uganda Charity Ltd, It was named after a

former Mityana UK Charity Trustee Ann Rosemary Potts (Nabukenya) who spearheaded its
establishment, and later handed it over to Debbie Harris another UK Trustee in 2012. The first Head
teacher Rev. Can. Wasswa Jethro Sebulime retired last year in December and he handed over the school
to Mr. Emmanuel Musaazi as the new head teacher.
Among the many visitors the school hosted last year included Andy and Debbie Harris, Pat Barton, the
Chairperson of UK committee Jean Ajin, Rev. Hugh Wakeling, Rev. Luci Heyn , Ann Potts
Nabukenya and a group of Wellington College students and parents that were led by Mark Boobbey and
Linda Raabe Marjot who came to officially open a Multipurpose Hall which construction they financed.
The Bishop of Mityana Diocese Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Kazimba also visited to dedicate the school
chapel to the Lord. Most of the structures at the school have been financed by Wellington College in
United Kingdom under the leadership of Mark Boobbey and Linda Raabe Marjot, unfortunately both of
them left the college last year.
The school had its first grandaunts sit for their Primary Leaving Exams in 2011; they all passed well
and progressed to Mityana Secondary School where they are being sponsored by the individual
sponsors through the charity.
3) Farming Project
i) New Land Acquisition (500 Acres)
With partnership with Mityana Diocese-Namukozi, the Charity acquired a 500 acres land at Lwankuba
Kitonya Village, Kasanda on a lease basis and with help from Mark Hall of Hall Hunter partnership in
the United Kingdom; the charity is working towards developing a Center of Excellence (COE) of
modern coffee farming in the region. The COE will majorly serve as a learning center for coffee
growers but also as an income generating activity for the charity to raise funds to supplement on its
financial donations.
ii) Coffee Growing
We had 20.8 acres of coffee planted at the begging of the year and by December 2012; we had grown
up to 40.8 acres of coffee. Preparations have already started to have more 30 acres planted by
December 2013. The Charity is working closely with different coffee producers and experienced
individuals in coffee production to ensure maximum production of good quality coffee beans. In
September this year, we anticipate to pick at least 4 tons of red cherries (4,000kgs) which is
approximately 1.5tons (1,500kg) of Kiboko.
iv) Community Capacity Building Activities
The Charity also provided community capacity building for the youth in Uganda with support from the
same Donor of the farm, Hall Hunter Partnership, a well established farm in the UK, employing a
group of 12 Ugandans (05 girls and 07 boys) at its farm in the UK. They left Uganda on 4th
April 2012
and returned on 8th
January, 2013, 10 of these will be returning to UK next week. Another group of 16
youth (09 girls and 07Boys) will be traveling on 1st April 2013 to begin their session.

This opportunity has helped many of the beneficiaries to set up businesses, help their parents recover
bank loans. Two beneficiaries want to finish their bachelors using the funds acquired from the project.
v) Other support for farmers
In the other developments, the farm drilled two boreholes (one allocated to the community and the
other used to pump water to the farm tanks), purchased a self driven Lawn Mower from Kenya and we
are in the initial stages of installing a Wet Mill Processing machine which will as well benefit the
neighboring farmers.
4) Safe Water Project
With help from Eng. Rev. Hugh Wakeling from UK, different water projects have been initiated in
2012. This service has been undertaken in three different approaches; i.e. drilling of boreholes,
Construction of concrete rain harvest water tanks as well as provision of plastic tanks as follows;
Mwera Prison 02 Concrete Tanks
Myanzi prison 01 new concrete tank.
Mityana Prison 01 plastic tank (6000 liters)
Magala Prison 01 Repaired existing water tank.
Kasolo Secondary School 03 concrete tanks and one plastic tank
Lwankuba Community drilled 02 boreholes.
Bamusuuta Parish drilled 01 borehole.
We have contracted Victoria Pumps Ltd to drill one borehole at Mpirigwa C/U Primary School and we
expect them to complete before end of March 2013.
5) Strengthening Health Services Project
In the year 2012, the Charity continued to partner with Mityana Diocese through Rev. Moses
Ssemogooma to contribute towards the improvement of the health sector in the region.
i) Provision of medical equipments and supplies
With financial support of £2,750 (UGX: 11 Million) from Mityana UK Charity, we managed to
equipped Kyato Health Centre II with medical equipments which among others include: Metalic beds,
modern delivery beds, Delivery set, BP machines, Trolley, Mattresses, Office Chairs & Tables, etc. The
charity will continue provision of medical supplies and equipment to health facilities in the region as
strategy to strengthen the capacity of health workers to offer quality health services. In future, the
charity will partner with other implementing health partners to conduct training for health workers to
build their capacity to provide improved health care services to patients.
ii) Clean water supply to health facilities
In order to identify the critical problems in the health department, the Charity with support from Rev.
Moses hired two qualified nurses to conduct a needs assessment survey, and as a result Mityana UK
Charity has secured funding to supply clean water to most of the clinics in Mityana Diocese and roofing
of the building at Lulagala Health Centre. The clinics that were sampled out for the survey included;
6 | P a g e
Kyato HC, Lulagala HC, Buwaata H/C, Mawujjo H/C, Bukwiri H/C , Kyanamugera H/C and
Bamusuuta H/C.
iii) Distribution of mosquito nets
With financial support from Jean Ajin, 200 treated mosquito nets were distributed to sponsored children
to help reduce the cases of malaria. In addition about 100 elderly people in Naama Parish received
domestic supplies such as Sugar, salt, cooking oil, matchboxes, rice, maize flour, tea leaves, Vaseline
and soap from Jean Ajin and Pat Barton.
iv) Community Health Education
Health Educational talks have been carried out at various community levels but especially using the
Church structures. In here, people have been sensitized on how to wash hands, importance of bathing,
proper usage of latrines, personal hygiene etc. It’s important to note that Health facilities being
supported sofar have continued to provide quality health services to their community members and
these include; Buwaata, Kyato & Kyanamugera Health Centres.
6) Legal Aid Project
The Charity continued to grow by establishing this is youngest project, it was officially started in April
2012 by Ann Potts Rosemary Nabukenya with the objectives of providing free legal counseling, court
representation, and rehabilitation of Ex-prisoners. Due to the limited funding at the moment, the project
focuses on four prisons in Mityana District, i.e. Mityana, Mwera, Magala and Myanzi prison.
Among the activities conducted by the project included;
a) Court Representation:
Legal representation was provided to a few remand prisoners at Mityana Chief Magistrates Court,
Kakindu court and Mubende court. We are grateful that those who were found innocent were realized as
a result of the project intervention.
b) Counselling and guidance to the prisoners:
This involved both the inmates who were on remand and those that had been convicted. Those
convicted were prepared and counselled on how to cope up with prison life as well as finding out if they
were actually aware of their sentences. It was also important to find out whether the prisoners that had
been convicted were satisfied with the position that court had reached concerning their different
charges.
c) Awareness on the Rights of prisoners:
This was offered to all the inmates, some of the them were not aware of their charges and others were
not aware of their legal rights as prisoners, we are glad that by the closure of the year 2012, prisoners in
the four prisons above were well sensitized on;
1. The right to a fair and speedy hearing Article 28(I) of the constitution establishes this principle.
2. The right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty or until that person has pleaded guilty.
3. The right to have the legal representation from the state in case of any offence which carries the
sentence of death or life imprisonment.
7 | P a g e
4. The right to be realised on Bail, where a person is arrested in respect to a criminal offence which
is bailable, the person has the right to apply to court to be released on bail.
B. Human Resources
The charity has 7 Major different Projects/departments i.e. Sponsorship, Finance & Administration,
Farming (Lwankuba Farm), Nabukenya Primary School, Water & Construction, Health and Prison &
legal Aid Project. All these work hand in hand to ensure that the charity runs smoothly to the betterment
of service delivery to the clients, donors and all partners.
The Charity has also got a team of part-time staff that have continued to offer services.

Overall adequate and motivated staffing levels were maintained throughout the year. Farewell parties
were also organized for the retiring staff to thanks them for the great contributions made to Mityana
Charity in general. At this point Hon. Guest of Honor allow me present to you a list of our members
who have worked tirelessly for many years to ensure that Mityana Uganda Charity moves forward.
C. Networking and Partnerships
Mityana Uganda Charity has continued to work closely with other implementing partners in order to
offer services in the area of operation. Key partners include; Mityana Diocese, Victoria Pumps Ltd,
8 | P a g e
Mityana, Magala, Mwera and Myanzi prisons, All Saints Church Busiimbi, Uganda Christian Lawyer’s
Fraternity, AFFINET Vocational Training Institute, A Child Un Heard, Centenary Bank Mityana
Branch, Enro Hotel, schools that educate our children and other development partners to mention but a
few. I wish to register our sincere appreciation to all of you our dear partners in your
distinguished capacities.
D. Challenges
High demand for sponsorship and Legal Aid support yet the Charity has limited capacity and funding
for these services. E.g. all the students that sat for PLE at NPS last year (2012) have no funds to join
secondary schools, yet the Charity has not secured any donation to facilitate this.
Most of the land meant for the farm at Lwankuba is occupied by the squatters, this leaves us with a small piece of
land for development hence small output, which is against the donor’s wish.
E. Future Plans
Construct well furnished Boys and Girls dormitories, kitchen and Nursery Blocks at Nabukenya
Primary School.
Install a first class Wet Coffee Processing Machine at Lwankuba Farm to be able to process our
coffee up to the parchment level.
To work with the community at Lwankuba to establish a big Valley dam to solve the problem of
water, before the processing plant starts operating.
Establish a well equipped resource centre in Mityana which will offer free reading and research
services to the people and students in the region.
Further support the public health facilities through Health system strengthening in order to
improve access to quality health services, clean water and good accommodation for the health
staff.
Establishing/Partner with Vocational Training Institutes to help equipped the needy children
with vocational skill.
F. Appeal
I wish to appeal to all stakeholders including government to prioritize the poverty eradication programs
so as to avail more funding for Income Generating Activities to the Low income earners, increase on
the sensitization of modern farming mechanism, increase health workers at health centers,
improving their motivation as well as providing the required drugs in right amounts and timely not
forgetting the need for the government to consider funding to NGOs doing such great work so that we
reduce donor dependency.

G. Appreciation and Conclusion
Many thanks go to Mityana UK committee which worked tirelessly throughout the year 2012 to ensure
that the required funds to meet the different project budgets were available, the partners who provided
the support that helped us to realize the achievements attained in the year and the Board of Directors
which always guided the management team. The Government of Uganda is also appreciated specifically
for the peaceful working environment and the Donor community was all very helpful. The Charity also
acknowledges the key role played by its beneficiaries, staff, and volunteers, especially the Charity
Advisory Committee, in ensuring that program activities were implemented successfully. We promise
continue to work together with all our partners.
