CARBON EFFICIENT BUILDING MANAGEMENT

The primary function of the Environmental Solutions Division was to utilise the Group’s wealth of knowledge and in-house expertise to implement energy efficient building management control systems - the heart and soul of any building services installation – as an integral part of Mitton Mechanical Services design projects.

This approach has proved the key to providing a cohesive, joined up approach to building services, which is fundamental to Mitton’s stated operational philosophy.

Access to this level of in-house expertise enables Mitton’s mechanical system designers, control system designers and the controls electrical engineers to start an efficiency-focused dialogue at the earliest stages of the design process, maintaining the coordinated approach which is inherent in the Group’s operational principles.

Environmental Solutions also provides the technical facilities and management skills for the on-site commissioning of energy efficient installations.

All work carried out by Environmental Solutions uses SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) methodology to ensure consistent and reliable evaluation of energy use in commercial buildings.

Over a decade ago, recognising the vital role that energy efficiency would play in the near future, the Mitton Group adopted an industry-leading stance in the environmental arena with the establishment of a dedicated Environmental Solutions Division.

The response team assumes responsibility for ensuring that the appropriate maintenance personnel are despatched to individual sites to resolve these issues.

Mitton Eye is responsible for monitoring one of the largest building management networks in the country, totalling over 800 sites, supervising a range of systems from simple installations through to business critical plant and equipment.

Statistics demonstrate that continuous plant management achieved through the Mitton Eye Bureau is also successfully driving down energy consumption and use, improving energy efficiency and minimising energy costs.

Mitton Environmental Solutions champions the drive for peak performance; consultative design and installation packages help clients ensure that buildings and integral services installations operate at maximum efficiency to optimise life cycles.

Mitton Environmental Solutions also provides sophisticated monitoring functions for building management control systems, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via the Mitton Eye energy bureau, supported by a 24/7 response team to resolve issues encountered.

Page 10: Mitton Mechanical Brochure

Mitton’s Environmental Division identified an installation in a large abattoir where this waste heat was not only being rejected to atmosphere, but where expelling this heat to atmosphere required yet more energy to power the ventilation system. The implementation was not straightforward, as the existing compressed air installation had grown organically with the business, featuring a range of compressors with differing capacities and heat outputs. The compressor manufacturers specified and installed a system on each compressor, which diverted hot oil from the usual air heat rejection radiator through an “oil to water” heat exchanger.

Mitton then designed, specified and installed an LPHW system featuring intelligent controls and variable speed / flow pumps to maximise the heat recovery available from each compressor, without over cooling the oil. The combined LPHW from all the compressors is then circulated around a high efficiency plate heat exchanger, which transfers this heat to the domestic hot water system. This slave circuit approach affords an element of protection insisted on by the client so that, in the event of an equipment failure, the risk of cross contamination between the compressors’ oil (which is food safe in any event) and the domestic hot water system is negligible.

After careful commissioning to ensure maximum heat recovery and system balance, the client is recovering nearly 836,000 kWh of heat, which equates to £28,000 per year of natural gas which has been displaced. Heat recovery opportunities exist for a number of industrial processes – contact Mitton to find out how and where you could save.

SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS USING HEAT RECOVERY FROM COMPRESSED AIR Generation of compressed air can be a significant energy expense for businesses, whilst by their very nature air compressors generate large amounts of waste heat.
