Ragwort (Senecio jacobea) is an extremely common weed found on road verges, waste
lands and unmanaged pastures. It grows over two years. During the first year it looks like a short stemmed flat rosette leaved plant which can be up to 15 cm in diameter. During the second year it produces tall stems up to one metre high with crenated leaves and distinctive small yellow flowers from spring to autumn.
Normally the growing plants and flowers are not palatable to horses and therefore do not cause a problem. Horses will usually only eat living ragwort if there is no other alternative feed in the pasture. However it becomes very palatable to horses after it has wilted at the end of its second year of growth, after spraying or after mowing pasture for hay. Unknown contamination of hay is the most common source of ragwort poisoning.
Ragwort contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that cause liver failure in horses. How much ragwort needs to be eaten to cause disease is not known as
By Paula Broadhurst
Ragwort PoisoningWith the coming of spring with its sunny days and intermittent rain, the pasture is starting
to thrive again however, this means that the ragwort will also be sprouting forth and require diligent attention!?
both low levels consumed over a long period, and sudden high levels eaten once off can cause liver damage and subsequent failure. Often the clinical signs only becomes apparent many months after exposure.
Horses that have eaten ragwort will initially not show any outward signs of illness, although they are actually developing liver disease. A blood test to check liver function is the only way to check for liver damage at this stage. Clinical signs of liver failure only develop once a significant percentage of the liver has been irreparably damaged. Signs that can be associated with liver failure include:• weightloss• depression• decreasedappetite• ventraloedema(fluidfillingalong
sternum and abdomen)• photosensitisation(ulceration,
crusting and scaling of pink skinned areas that is often mistaken for mud fever)
• hepaticencephalopathy(headpressing, confusion, incoordination, fitting)The onset of signs is often subtle
at first but then progress rapidly and most horses will die within two to four weeks of developing signs of liver failure.
A diagnosis of ragwort poisoning is
made using a combination of a history of possible exposure, clinical signs and blood tests to check liver function. If abnormalities in the liver enzymes are detected on blood testing then a liver biopsy is the next diagnostic step. A liver biopsy is done under sedation and ultrasound guided to collect a sample of liver tissue. This sample is then examined for characteristic changes associated with ragwort – pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning.
Once a horse is showing significant signs of liver failure and a liver biopsy has confirmed that ragwort poisoning is the cause, the prognosis is hopeless as ragwort destroys the livers ability to regenerate. Horses with no or mild clinical signs, mild changes on liver biopsy and slight increases in blood liver enzymes may be able to be managed with special low protein and high carbohydrate diets.
Prevention is the most important step to avoid your horse being at risk of ragwort poisoning. Control of weeds in your horses pasture is a constant ongoing process and ensuring that hay is from a good source and not contaminated with weeds will hopefully prevent a tragic outcome. NM

A s summer gets into full swing, the garden is a
beautiful space to relax in while the kids play.
How better to keep them occupied than a
Wendy House.
Apart from imaginative play away from the TV,
computer and i-pod, the Wendy House can be perfect for
arts and crafts or even painting without worrying about the
mess in the kitchen.
It is a stunning addition to any garden but the only
problem with a traditional Wendy House is that the
children grow too big for it and then what happens?
Luckily NFF Ltd has come up with a cunning plan. Their
design team has evolved a Wendy Shed. This is a stunning
4ft x 6ft timber shed that can be painted in pretty colours.
It is just £495 (inc vat) and the price includes a free tin of
colour stain. The Wendy Shed is well made and very pretty
to look at.
This delightful building will be a joy for any child
to play in and doesn’t have the limited shelf life of a
traditional Wendy House. Being the height of a standard
garden shed, it can be as versatile as it needs to be to suit
a growing family. As the children grow older, the Wendy
Shed can be used for garden sleepovers, homework,
space for teens to play their music or for the storage of
toys, bikes, garden equipment and more. Some have even
suggested it would make a good mini-office!
NFF designs and makes all shapes and sizes of timber
buildings for many different uses. Ask for a quote today.

Lungeing by Dr Hilary Bentley of Equi Ami
M any people only lunge their horses when they are short of time and, ultimately, achieve very little. Like any good schooling session
lungeing should have a plan and a timescale then real targets can be reached. 1. Lungeing allows the horse to develop balance and use
his back and topline muscles without the pressure of a saddle and rider.
2. I t presents a great opportunity to watch your horse closely, noting areas of weakness and imbalance.
3. Done well, lungeing can promote engagement and get the horse really working through his back, developing power and swing.
A lunge session for a horse is the equivalent of a workout in the gym for a human athlete so it is important to work the right muscle groups and get him working in self-carriage. The easiest way to do this is to use a good training aid such as the EquiAmi which will promote engagement, wither lift and a soft, equal contact. There’s no point in the horse whizzing round on the forehand, unbalanced with trailing hocks says Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi.
You should always structure the session to get the best from it. Five minutes of warm-up at the beginning will increase the heart rate and warm the muscles up ready for more intense work. This will help to keep the horse supple and will reduce the chance of injury. The main body of the session, around ten minutes, can involve pole work, canter work, transitions, several changes of rein and spiralling in and out. With a fit horse you can ask a lot but with a youngster, veteran or one undergoing rehabilitation a lower intensity session is ideal; always tailoring the session to the horse. The last five minutes should be devoted to warm-down where the horse works in a long, low outline,
stretching and cooling-down the muscles and bringing the heart and respiration rates back down.
Ideally an all weather surface is best as you have a consistent surface and can make use of the long sides but we do lunge on grass and, if you don’t have a small paddock, poles can be used to create a more confined area. Safety is important so take care to use hat, gloves, boots etc but try and avoid lungeing from the bit if possible by using a good cavesson. Lungeing from the bit gives a sideways pull and puts pressure on the outside of the mouth which discourages the horse from lowering into the contact.
In a good lunge session you can watch your horse working effectively through his back, tracking up, lifting his shoulder and using his topline muscles whilst softening the under neck muscles and tightening his abs – just like any good athlete. Twenty minutes of this once or twice a week can bring many rewards as well as adding another dimension to your relationship with your horse.
The golden rules of lungeing:1. Protect your horse with boots or bandages and yourself
with hat, gloves and boots.2. Spend a few minutes on each rein warming up and
stretching3. Finish with a few minutes cooling down and stretching4. Young, old or unfit horses should be lunged on big circles
and in walk and trot only5. Be in charge of the session and don’t allow the horse to
dictate the pace or circle size.6. Make each pace as good as possible – no dawdling in
walk!7. Make use of transitions and rein changes to keep the
horse interested and listening8. Be clear and consistent in your words and praise him
when he deserves it. NM
With horses coming back into work Dr Hilary Bentley from EquiAmi gives NagMag some timely tips on lungeing techniques

A few years back NagMag
had the pleasure of
visiting and interviewing
Alex Osborn at the delightful
Prestwood Competition Stables. After
six fantastic years at Prestwood, Alex
is on the move and ready to bring
his ‘Alex’ touch to a new venture
at Golden Cross Equestrian Centre.
During his time at Prestwood,
Alex suffered an horrendous fall
and although told never to ride
again, he managed through sheer
determination and against all odds to
not only get back in the saddle but
rebuild his career. He is never one
to shy away from a challenge and
his future hopes are now pinned on
building on the fantastic reputation
that the Centre has achieved
over the years and bringing on an
equestrian centre fit for the 21st
century.
Alex started his career at the
age of sixteen working for Freddie
Welsh and for seven years competed
regularly on the show circuit,

Alex Osborn at Golden Cross Equestrian Centre
has been quietly planning for some
time. As an excellent trainer and
competitor Alex understands the
requirements of the rider and having
maintained excellent livery facilities
in the past, he also understands the
quality of care that is required to
maintain happy horses for optimum
performance.
Alex will be taking care of the
day to day running of the centre
and his partner Craig McClelland
will be taking care of all the catering
needs. Craig has for the past three
years been running a very popular
family greengrocers in St Leonards
and will be transferring his skills
and knowledge to Golden Cross to
making it to HOYS on more than
one occasion in the Newcomers
Final. He also embarked on a
modelling career, appearing in
magazines and television and later
transferred to the position of stylist
for ITV. His television career and
media knowledge has taken him on
journeys across the world and it is
his passion for horses and media
savvy that will see him making a
success of Golden Cross EC.
Having in the past refurbished
and renovated a chateau in France
and built a fantastic Equitation Centre
at Prestwood, Alex is looking forward
to this new challenge, something he

offer the very best in home produce
in the cafe area, looking to source
produce as locally as possible. Hmm
– think we are all looking forward to
some tasty treats! Craig will also be
competing and using the facilities
as much as possible; he is already
a keen competitor and rides out
regularly with the Southdown and
Eridge Hunt.
Following in the footsteps of Ian
Bareham who made an excellent
job of running the shows at Golden
Cross for many years is as Alex
remarks “a daunting task.” However
with an excellent foundation to build
upon Alex is unperturbed at the work
ahead and relishes the challenge to
put his own stamp on the Centre.
Current events being held are BS
affiliated show Jumping, unaffiliated
show Jumping, Clear Round days and
training clinics. In the pipeline and to
be announced will be Dressage and
Combined Training. Team GC have
introduced a new Championship
with qualifiers for non BS registered
horses and ponies that can work
towards the GC Championships on
the 28th September. 1st, 2nd and
3rd places at qualifying shows will go
through to the championship final;
the grand final winner receiving £100
plus trophy, sash and rosette.
There is much that takes place
at this very busy Centre, including
many dog agility classes and training.
Carriage driving events, RDA days,
Pony club meets and Alex is always
open to ideas for further use such
as an Antiques Fair, Western Riding
display, Heavy horse event – in fact
just contact Alex with any ideas, he
will always be keen to help where
he can.
Refurbishment plans are first and
foremost the hard standing areas, so
lorries and cars can make a smooth
transition to the Centre, secondly
levelling and replacement of the
Alex Osborn at Golden Cross Equestrian Centre
indoor school surface, plus general
tidying of the area, including a
lovely Show office and updated
cafe, now known as ‘The
Feed Room’. Plans are
afoot to look at increasing
the size of the outdoor
arena while improving
drainage and to save the
grass arena with Derby
bank to be used for
special occasions such as
The GC Derby Show in July
and other events. 5* Part/Full
and Competition Liveries will be
considered, with access to seven fully
fenced fantastic grass paddocks for
turnout, indoor stabling in American
Barn and full facilities. Alex will also
be offering his proven ability as a top
class trainer.
Eggs used in the ‘Feed Room’ will
be courtesy of the GC Ladies, who are
obligingly laying about eight eggs a day,
so when having a bacon and egg bap,
please say a thank you to the ladies.
Bread Rolls will be delivered on show
days from a local artisan baker and
there will also be an array of pickles,
jams, honey, fresh juice and preserves
that can be purchased on site.

Billy Beware, was delighted with their sixth placing.
“It's the first time we've been to Badminton,” said
Jonathan and Jane Clarke from Dorking, the owners of Billy
Beware, “and it's the first Billy horse to have completed
Badminton! Altogether it's been a very emotional
experience!” NM
Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials 2014
C old, showery and windy weather
during this year's Mitsubishi Motors
Badminton Horse Trials took its toll
on horses, riders and spectators alike and was
certainly a contributory factor in the final result!
Australian Paul Tapner was an early leader in
the dressage phase on a score of 36.0 partnered by the
Irish-bred 17hh grey gelding Kilronan and regained the
lead after the tough cross-country phase. Tapner thought
that the cross-country would be amazingly influential and
predicted that perhaps only five horses would come home
inside the time allowed.
In fact, out of 83 starters, all 35 who completed
Guiseppe Della Chiesa's challenging course incurred time
penalties. Lucinda Green congratulated the Italian course-
builder for bringing the Badminton 4* course back to what
it should be, a sentiment echoed by others.
“I expected the course to be strong,” said Guiseppe,
“but there were some very unexpected mishaps involving
some of the top riders! The Vicarage Vee jumped well
and the Mirage Pond was a strong section but the biggest
surprise was all the unexpected problems at the Owlhole
on the Outlander Bank. I would have liked to have seen
more horses complete the course but I hope the riders

liked and enjoyed the questions I asked.”
Many world-class riders parted company with their
mounts - Mark Todd, Pippa Funnell, William Fox-Pitt - and
even Mr Stickability, Andrew Nicholson, the final rider on
the course, came unstuck! Mary King made a miraculous
recovery after landing on Imperial Cavalier's neck while
negotiating the Owlhole, only to retire three fences further
on. Sussex rider Clare Lewis was annoyed with herself for
incurring penalties at the Owlhole with Sidnificant but,
apart from time penalties and losing her hat silk, crossed
the finishing line relatively unscathed.
“I don't care!” was Clare's reaction after taking three
poles out in the showjumping course. “Sid's normally a
really good jumper, but it's heavy out there and the time
was tight. Despite everything I have enjoyed this year's
Badminton. It's our 8th completion at 4* level!”
Tina Cook also added 12 penalties in the showjumping
arena and agreed with Clare. “It's a shame,” she said. “My

1. Your saddle, new or second-hand, should be fitted by a MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF MASTER SADDLERS. Their first consideration will always be the horse. This may mean that you need to adjust any preconceived ideas you may have about your own preferences in relation to make and design.
2. If you MUST use a numnah or gel pad the saddle fitter must be informed at the time of the original enquiry – and always before the saddle is fitted. Adding a numnah under a saddle which fits well without it is akin to putting thick insoles into shoes that fit perfectly without them.
3. Each horse should have its own saddle. Just as a pair of shoes adapts to the wearer’s foot, so the saddle adopts the contours of the horse. Ill advised riders use one saddle on several horses (‘it cuts down on tack cleaning’…’I ride better in that particular saddle’…) without pausing to consider possible consequences.
4. It may be possible to adjust your existing saddle to fit your new horse – but the advice of a qualified saddle fitter should always be sought.
5. Your horse changes shape regularly. The frequency of these changes will relate to his age, training, management and so on. Try to develop an eye to recognise these changes. Viewed on a daily basis, the changes may seem inconsequential but over a period of just a week or so they can be surprisingly substantial. Have your saddle checked – and any necessary adjustments made – regularly.
6. ‘Feed’ your saddle carefully. Insufficiently treated the leather will dry out. Fed too much, the dressing will not be absorbed and the saddle will be unpleasantly sticky – possibly marking your clothes, or worse, causing the saddle stitching to rot. The regularity with which the saddle requires ‘dressing’ relates to usage, weather conditions and so on.
7. The young horse must be fitted especially carefully. His – or her – back is ‘virgin territory’ and very precious. Great care must be taken to avoid any damage that may cause problems later in life. Young horses should never be lunged in any old saddle. The young back is particularly vulnerable and a swinging/bouncing saddle that doesn’t fit – and may even be damaged – can be the cause of veterinary problems that may be irreversible. Recognise, too, that some young horses develop at a substantial rate and the saddle that fitted well only a short time previously may need adjustment.
8. The standard general purpose saddle is a compromise and can never fulfil the needs of individual disciplines as well as saddles designed specifically.
9. Unlevelness, even slight, in your horse’s gait – especially behind – can cause the saddle to move/gyrate thus possibly exacerbating the existing problem
10. Mounting from a mounting block should not be restricted to the less-than-athletic! It is infinitely better for the
22 ❘ NagMag June 2014 For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com
Saddle Fitting
horse’s back and guards against the saddle tree becoming twisted – quite easy to happen if the saddle is regularly used as a lever.
11. When mounting the rider’s weight should always be lowered gently into the saddle – never ‘thump’ or ‘bang’.
12. If you insist on mounting from the ground be aware that the stirrup leathers should be changed from side to side regularly to avoid the near-side leather becoming longer/stretched.
13. Saddles should be carefully stored on a well-made saddle horse or rack. Never position saddles where they can be knocked off the rack. Appreciate that lifting a saddle onto a very high rack can damage your own back – and often results in the saddle being stored lop-sided.
14. Great attention must always be paid to the condition of the saddle flocking. Irregular/uneven/lumpy flocking can cause pressure points that may seriously damage the horse’s back. Severe irregularity in the flocking can cause the saddle to sit to one side. Correct flocking provides a cushioning effect that helps to reduce trauma. Over stuffed, the saddle will be hard, will not adapt to the horse’s back and may cause pressure sores or sensitivity.
15. The saddle must always be level when viewed from the side. Anything else compromises the horse’s comfort and welfare. ‘Up-hill’ the rider will sit too far back. ‘Down-hill the rider will be encouraged onto the fork.
16. When viewed from the front and rear the saddle gullet must always provide adequate clearance – both before and after the horse is exercised.
17. Most equine insurance can be extended to include theft of tack. Some policies even include accidental damage. Important considerations – but do read the small print ‘exclusions’ carefully before signing up.
18. It is important to ask the saddler to check any saddle in use when a horse falls. ‘Hidden’ damage may be substantial – broken/cracked trees can be difficult to detect. Likewise, if the saddle falls from the saddle rack or is dropped it should be checked over by a qualified saddler.
19. The size of the stirrup irons should be checked when a different rider exercises the horse. Irons that are either too small or too large can be the cause of serious accidents.
20. Weak or defective stitching on any part of the saddle should be repaired instantly. Saddles should be checked every time they are used; equal attention should be paid to girths and leathers.

Saddle Fitting
Essential Knowledge as recommended by The Society of Master Saddlers Recent
independent
research
from Dundee
University has
verified that
Flair – the
air flocking
system give 26 per cent less pressure on your horses back
than wool flocking. This allows the horse to move bigger
with increased stride and elevation of the back, verification
of the claim by First Thought Equine manufacturers of
Flair. For more information about WOW Saddles www.wowsaddles.com or call 01227 831614
Did you realise that Veterinary Thermal Imaging’s
images can be used as a saddle fitting aid? A well fitting
saddle will, when removed, show an even thermal pattern
indicating an even
distribution of
pressure across
the horse’s back.
If a saddle pinches
or is too tight,
more heat will be
produced, showing
a different thermal pattern- as is true for bridging or lumpy
flocking.
VTI offers back and saddle scans for just £50 plus
travel and is currently running a summer special for this
service if more than five horses are booked at the same
venue at the same time. This brings the cost down to £40.

A revolutionary new design of the Future saddle will increase freedom of movement of the horse’s shoulder as it rotates; enabling the horse to lengthen its stride with minimal interference from the saddle. It will enable riders to jump higher, gallop faster and perform better. To achieve this the front panel has been cut away so it can sit comfortably behind the shoulder permitting more movement. To maintain stability and balance for the rider, the front flap is reinforced, also stopping it collapsing against the horse’s shoulder. The Future is available with Event, Jump or GP style flaps. www.harrydabbs.co.uk or call 01922 612238

The much awaited Heavy Horse & Country Show took place in lovely weather on 17th & 18th May and according to organisers South Eastern Shire Horse Association was a great success. This year saw the popular addition of a demonstration of ploughing with a chance to get up close and personal with these lovely heavies. The star of the show was 12-year-old Skye Bransten in the trade and agricultural turnout, with her two shires pulling a grass harrow, Skye took first in a very strong class.
As a showcase for the heavy breeds this show is extremely important. It enables people to become more familiar with the different breeds; is a great day out for families and in the long term will help to stop many of the heavy breeds from joining the ‘at risk’ list. Make it a date for next year. NM
