Advice from 2016 Externs
As a freshman in the externship program, it was my first job that was not part of a research lab. It was a great way to make connections and gain experience working in a professional environment. I would advise externs to take advantage of that opportunity and try their best to make a positive impression on the company, as that would greatly help in their future.
Get an externship in any field you think you might be interested; it's only a month, so it's not a huge commitment if you end up disliking it, but it could be an amazing experience like I had.
Apply to all kinds of places. I ended up at a start-up in the middle of Utah – very, very far from where I could have possibly imagined. It turned out great, though - I loved the people and the work was fun.
Apply to things that look fun! One month is not a lot of time at all, so get ready to dive in the first week!

Skype Interview Tips Don’t make excuses Professional username Dress the part Think about your location Use a headset Maintain eye contact Handle any tech glitches with grace Avoid glitches by practicing Eliminate interruptions Treat this Skype interview as you would any in-
person interview-Michaela Gianotti, Koru
Phone Interview Tips Compile a list of your strengths and weaknesses, accomplishments
and answers to typical questions. Have a “cheat sheet” of compelling story topics (project work, class
work, activities, sports) that highlight your accomplishments. Have the job description in front of you. Have your resume in front of you. Have a pen and paper available to take notes. Be in a quiet place alone--turn off music, the TV, use the do not disturb
feature on your phone, and eliminate any other background noise that might be distracting.
Clear the room. Evict your roommate. Tape a do not disturb sign on your door. Lock your door.
Standing while talking on the phone helps you speak in a clear and confident manner.
Go one step further and stand in front of a mirror. Are you smiling? A smile can be heard over the phone. You’ll appear positive.
Phone Interview Tips cont. Grab a friend and practice. Record your interview. How many
filler words did you use such as um, like, and you know? Take a moment to think about the question, and then respond
speaking slowly and clearly. Keep your answers under two minutes. If the interviewer is
silent, don’t assume you should keep talking. Wait for the interviewer to respond with a comment or the next question. If there is a period of silence, don’t panic, the employer could be taking notes.
Use the S.T.A.R. method to respond: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Present the specific situation. Explain the task and the steps taken. Share the outcome. What did you learn and how will you bring that to the externship?
No gum chewing, eating, or texting during the interview. Follow up with a thank-you email after the phone interview to
reiterate your interest in the position.
Overview Review the opportunities – don’t apply too early or too
late. DO NOT WAIT until 11:55 a.m. on September 27. Apply for only opportunities you will accept – have a plan
if it is outside of Cambridge. What is more important - having an externship or having
a specific externship (withdraw deadline October 17)? Remember it must be a PDF document. Bookmark: https://alum.mit.edu/externship/2017/applicant Go to the Careers Office for cover letter/resume advice. International Students: The ISO must sign off on your
