Today’s students are eager to learn, collaborate, be challenged, and effect positive change, and they fully embrace the mens et manustradition. At the same time, they express deep gratitude for the opportunity to be here—anopportunity afforded in large part by donors like you.

By supporting undergraduate scholarships, you ensure the Institute’s ability to remain a meritocracy, where financial constraints are no obstacle for those who earn admission to MIT. The following pagesprovide a glimpse into the truly remarkable impact of your fund. Your generosity is transformative inboth the financial support it provides today, as well as by demonstrating the importance ofphilanthropy to those who will one day be alumni themselves.

As you well know, our students are among the brightest and most talented in the world, and they facemany challenges and pressures during their time on campus. By supporting undergraduatescholarships, you afford students the opportunity to focus on their studies and activities, not thefinancial burden. At the same time, you demonstrate to them the importance of philanthropy.

On behalf of the Alumni Association and MIT, I thank the alumni and friends who contribute to thisfund, and the leadership who made this endowment a fundraising priority.

I feel that I really fit in and that it is aplace I can thrive.

MY TIME AT MITMaybe not MIT itself, but I lost what little confidence I had in myself and my abilities after a horriblerelationship and poor academic during first semester. I went through a couple of really emotionally toughmonths in the beginning of second semester and am finally healthy again as of about two months ago. Ithink I've grown a lot from my MIT experience so far, even though it's been hard. Everyone is crazy smart, but everyone is also pretty normal in other respects.

MIT ACTIVITIES

ARTS

ATHLETICS

I participated in club volleyball.

ACADEMIC/RESEARCH INTERESTS

I participated in ChemE Doyle's group last year. I plan to find a new Undergraduate Research OpportunitiesProgram (UROP) more closely related to my interest and major.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

I interned at Electronics Telecommunications and Research Institute (ETRI) at South Korea this summer of2013. I learned a lot about communication and how data travels across the network.

CAREER PLANS

Because I have not studied deep enough in one area, I don't know the specifics of my future plans. But I dowant to learn more about my subject by working in a company, then do business with the creative ideas Ikeep in store that are worth commercializing.

MY TIME AT MITMIT is an interesting place. It has made me feel so big yet so small. Like most of the MIT population, Ihave had a fairly smooth high school academic career. There was not much chance for me to hit a hardwall called limitation. A little bit of effort typically gave me a sufficient enough result to stop pushingmyself. And MIT became the place of my utter helplessness, yet the place I can reach beyond imagination. The challenges and geniuses here makes me break down that wall and extend my dream into a biggerscale.

I was most surprised at the respect MIT gives to the students. I believe it is hard for universities to evenact like they care for each student. I really appreciate the freedom and responsibility MIT gives us in everyarea. Along with the freedom, MIT gives so much opportunities for students to excel. MIT has become theplace for us to stretch our dreams and creativity a step further than what we think we can achieve. Fromthis financial aid, dormitory decisions, MISTI programs, to UROP, there are too many things to takeadvantage of. And I realize once again that people don't awe at the name of MIT for no reason.

SUPPORTING MERITOCRACY: BY THE NUMBERS

As of October 18, 2013

MIT is a true meritocracy, admitting the best and brightest students regardless of their financial circumstances and awarding financial aid solely on the basis of need. The full cost of an MIT education—tuition and fees; room and board; books, supplies, and personal expenses; and average travel allowance—now surpasses $59,000 a year. Resources are needed to ensure that an MIT education remains accessible to all talented young people. Your gifts to scholarships at MIT make dreams possible. Students come here to make an enduring impact on the world. With your support, they will surely succeed.
