Lechler Made-to-measure for yourapplication.

Working closely with plantoperators and with scientificinstitutes, Lechler has devel-oped a variety of mist elimin- ators that exactly meet the

above-mentioned require-ments and they have provedto be highly successful inmany fields of industry: inreducing environmental pollu-tion from existing plants, ingas-washing installations, inthe chemical and woodpulpindustries, on offshore rigs, inair-conditioning and ventilationsystems, in cooling towers andin evaporative condensers - infact, wherever it is necessaryto separate droplets of liquidreliably and effectively solu-tion, that is why each

played a vital role in manyprocess operations and in gaswashing plants. They becomeeven more important nowthrough the imposition of evermore stringent environmentalprotection regulations thatnecessitate a drastic reductionin the pollutants carried by thegases leaving gas-washingplants.

Such regulations make it nec-essary to install high-perfor-mancewhile generating as little pres-sure loss as possible, arecapable of arresting even thefinest droplets, often with adiameter of less than 10 μm.

Such an objective calls for aseparation system with only afew components that is capableof dealing with high flow rates.

It is necessary to the designand planning of mist elimin- ators to have a thoroughunderstanding of the functionand performance of the vari-ous separation system as wellas a good understanding ofthe process in which themist eliminator will be incor- porated. It is of great impor-tance when designing amist eliminator to have an understanding of how dropletsare generated and of how theyare transported in a flow ofgas. We can honestly say thatwe know as much or more inthis respect than any other, forwe have been engaged in thedetection, measurement anddefinition of droplets for morethan 125 years. It is not without reason that Lechler mist eliminators have become suchessential elements in almostevery field of process engineering. As a means of determining theperformance data of Lechlerhigh-performance mist

eliminators we use our ownlaboratory facilities equippedwith the most up-to-date mea-surement equipment that isoften of our own design. Forexample, the droplet-particleanalyser, which simultaneous-ly measures and immediatelyevaluates the size and velocityof droplets, or the high speedcamera which photographsdroplets "in flight". Apart fromour own facilities, we use awide range of measuringequipment of many scientificinstitutes. Many measurements made onsite in plants already in opera-tion have proved the high per-formance of Lechler misteliminators and their superiordesign.

In the design phase of a vane-type separator it is of greatimportance for Lechler toknow the nature of the medi-um from which the dropletshave to be separated and ofthe liquid of which the droplets

are composed. Lechler's com-puter-aided design is basedon this information and ondata of water-air systemsmeasured under normal con-ditions.

The working point on theimpact surface is determinedwith the aid of a special trans-formation equation. This equa-tion makes allowance for all

process-engineering parame-ters. It was developed on thebasis of natural laws and itsvalidity was confirmed throughlaboratory and field tests.

In addition, calculate the an-ticipated pressure loss, thedegree of separation, thedroplet flight path, and othertechnical data the user mayneed for the design of his plant.

The functional principle- Primary separation- Secondary separation

Lechler vane-type separatorswork on the physical principleof inertia, and separation isthus effected in two stages:

n Primary separation andn Secondary separation

Primary separation

A flow of gas, laden withdroplets, flows through a bandof curved and speciallyformed baffle vanes. Forces ofinertia act upon the dropletswhile these are subject todirectional flow changes in thebaffle vanes. These forcesdivert the droplets from theoriginal gas flow.

The geometry of the bafflevanes, the nature of the gasand of the fluid, and the sizeand initial locations of a partic-ular droplet, determinewhether the gas will carry itthrough the space betweenthe baffle vanes, or whether itwill come in contact with oneof the separator surfaces.

Droplets that under given con-ditions come 100% in contactwith a baffle-vane and thenjoin with others to form a filmof liquid are designated "limitdroplets" are separated at thisstage. At the same time only asmall number of the smallerdroplets are separated at thisstage. The proportion of droplets car-ried on by the gas flow is des-ignated the "fractional degreeof separation" and serves as ameans of assessing the effi-ciency of a mist eliminatorsystem.

Secondary separation

The curvature and shape ofthe baffle vanes are such thatthe film of liquid formed ontheir surfaces as a result of pri-mary separation is completelyremoved from the gas flow. This is generally achieved bythe baffle vanes having spe-cially-formed phase-separa-tion chambers. Where dropletseparators are concerned thathave to work with as little pressure loss as possible, thebaffle vanes are provided witha series of grooves that act asphase separators.Depending on the application, the phase separation cham-bers differ in shape and size.Apart from directionalchanges in gas flow, the num-ber and form of the phaseseparation chambers consid-erably affect the pressure lossacross the mist eliminatorsystem.

Horizontal, vertical oroblique gas flow

Various vertical and horizontaltypes of Lechler high-perfor-mance mist eliminators areavailable, depending on thedirection in which the gas isrequired to flow. Where cir-cumstances demand, it is alsopossible to provide separatorsfor an oblique flow of gas.The choice of the suitable sep-arator depends on the designof the plant and other require-ments. The Lechler engineeringstaff will ensure the rightchoice and will be pleased toassist the customer in alldesign aspects.

Mist Eliminators with vertical gas flow

In vane-type mist eliminators with a vertical gas flow the baffle vanes are arranged hor-izontally or at a slight angle tothe horizontal. Since the gasflows upwards in the oppositedirection, it is necessary for thebaffle vanes to be designed sothat certain regions arebypassed by the gas flow. Thus zones are provided inwhich the droplets can be col-lected without interaction withthe gas. These zones also pro-vide a secure diversion of thecollected liquid from the sur-face of the vanes. This require-ment can be met in variousways and in function of theprofile and shape of the vanes.

As the liquid has to flow in theopposite direction to the gas,the film of liquid that forms onthe vane has to be converted

back to droplets. To preventoverstressing of the system bydroplets being picked up andrecirculated by the gas flow, these droplets must be sub-stantially larger than those car-ried into the separator by thegas.

Functional principle of a horizontal separatorFunctional principle of a vertical separator

Mist Eliminators with horizontal gas flow

Vane-type mist eliminatorsfor a horizontal gas flow havea system of vertical bafflevanes. The provision for sec-ondary separation is of a dif-ferent design from that of sep-arators for vertical gas flow.

When the flow of gas is hori-zontal the baffles stand verti-cally and the liquid film thatforms on them flows down-wards by gravity. The provi-sion of regions, before orbehind the phase-separationchambers, that are bypassedby the gas flow, enable the liq-uid film to flow off the baffleswithout renewed contact withthe gas.

The fact that the flow-off isassisted by gravity results inmist eliminators with a particularly high performance.

Depending on the separator,gas-flow rates of up to 10 m/scan be achieved.

The baffles can be shaped forparticularly satisfactory gasflow characteristics, thereforethe pressure loss across suchseparators is remarkably now.

To suit the needs of each par-ticular application, a choicecan be made from a finelystaged range of baffle-vanetypes with a simple or multiplegas-flow diversion.

Each project calls for a specialdesign and arrangement ofdroplet separators. Thedesign, construction, and themanner in which the bafflesare arranged in a Lechlermist eliminator dependentirely on the requirements, details and specification of theproject. Lechler does not offera standard "off the shelf" solu-tion but designs and assem-bles the most suitable separatorfor each specific requirementutilising standard elements ofthe Lechler unit constructionsystem.

For extremely fine droplets –Lechler aerosol separators

Under special conditions itcan be necessary to separatedroplets which are much moresmaller than the limit drop sizeof a van-type separator. Inthose cases fibre packs withregulated or unregulatedstructure are used as aerosolseparator or as aerosolagglomerator in combinationwith vane-type separators.

For horizontal gas flow:agglomerator and vane-typeseparator

This combination of a fibrepack agglomerator in the firststage and a vane-type separa-tor as the second stage, offersspecial advantages. The allowed gas velocity of thevane-type separator permitssmall flow areas, which withan aerosol separator alonewould not be feasible. Theaerosol separator catches thehigh speed droplets, andguides them to the vane-typeseparator as agglomerated, larger drops. We can deliver this separatorcombination to you in plastic(PP, PVDF) or stainless steel(1.4301, 1.4571, etc.) in com-plete frame units, with or with-out housings. The diversecombination possibilities ofdifferent vane-type and fibrepack separators offers you awide spectrum of perfor-mance.

For vertical gas flow: thevane-type separator andaerosol separator

For vertical gas flow, we use avane-type separator as the firststage and an aerosol separa-tor as the second. This combi-nation has a higher separationperformance as the singlecomponents alone. So is for example the sensitivityof aerosol (fibre pack) separa- Fibre pack with regulated structure

tors faced with a high watercontent quite unproblematic inthis combination. The firststage of vane-type separatorremoves the large dropsbefore they can reach theaerosol separator. The aerosolseparator can then be usedwith much higher gas veloci-ties as it is possible in a standalone solution. This results invery high separation efficien-cies even for the finest dropletsizes.

Lechler can deliver this sepa-ration concept in pre-fab unitswith the type nomenclature„Demisec“, for mounting onyour support systems. Whencovering larger areas, theunits can be connected toeach other.

Beside the choices of materials, plastic (PP, PVDF) and stain-less steel (1.4301, 1.4571 etc),the diverse combination ofpossibilities offer a very wideworking spectrum and thepossibility of adaptation tooperational changes and otherdemands.

Lechler mist eliminators are designed to provide as little restriction as possible to the flow of gas. Where, however, the gas is heavily laden with dust, the solid particles mayadhere to or be baked ontothe baffles and thus affect theefficiency of the separator.

To ensure continuity of opera-tion and to avoid costly down-times it is desirable to install acleaning system. An arrange-ment that provides cyclicwashing of the mist elimina-tor through full-cone nozzlesmounted to the front and rearof the baffles has proved par-ticularly effective.

Such an arrangement increas-es reliability, avoids encrusta-tion, and ensures that the plantwill maintain its optimum effi-ciency over a very long period.
