RingTheBell GAME 2 MISSOURI WESTERN VS #5 FORT HAYS STATE Thursday, SEPT. 6, 2018 // 7:00 p.m. CRAIG FIELD AT SPRATT MEMORIAL STADIUM (7,200) The early season gauntlet continues this week for Griffon Football as Missouri Western’s 2018 home opener welcomes the defending MIAA Champion Fort Hays State Tigers to Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium. Missouri Western dropped the season opener at No. 5 Northwest Missouri last week, 28-6. A visibly improved Griffon team moved the ball up and down the field against the vaunted Bearcat defense, but saw drives stalled by penalties and missed opportunities. Missouri Western totaled 324 yards of offense against the Northwest defense that limited opponents to 213 yards per game a season ago. A Griffon de- fense dotted with new names gave up 378 yards to Northwest, but 182 of those yards came on three long touchdown plays, all at least 34 yards and two more than 50. Missouri Western held Northwest to just one third quarter first down on four drives. Fort Hays State trailed Central Missouri for the first 45 minutes of its home opener last week, but a 5-yard touchdown pass with three minutes remaining clinched a 20-16 vic- tory for the Tigers. Down 16-6 late in the fourth quarter, Fort Hays scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes to complete the comeback. The game winning score came three plays after an unforced fumble by Central Missouri’s back-up quarterback at the UCM 3-yard line. Missouri Western quarterback Dom Marino led the Griffons with 75 rushing yards on 14 carries and passed for 226 yards without turning the ball over. Keylan Mack was Marino’s go-to target for much of the game, pulling in seven catches for 67 yards. Elijah Cunningham caught three passes, but averaged 21 yards per reception, totalling 64 receiving yards. Transfer tight end Luke Vang caught four passes for 50 yards. James Huskey didn’t look like a linebacker playing his first MIAA game since 2016. The redshirt senior led the Griffon defense with eight total tackles, 2.5 for loss. The Griffons also recorded a pair of sacks against the Bearcats. Kwentin Polk got a strip sack in the fourth quarter that ended a Northwest drive in Missouri Western territory. Tyler Basch went 2-for-3 on field goal attempts in week one. The senior was named to the Fred Mitchell Award preseason watch list. After making his last 10 attempts of 2017, Basch missed his first attempt of the 2018 season, but was true on his other two to give the Griffons their only points last week at Northwest. Fort Hays State gave up 508 yards of offense to Central Missouri, most of it coming in the first half. The Mules rushed for 277 yards and passed for 263. Fort Hays State totaled 327 yards of offense, 134 on the ground and 226 through the air. Charles Tigner leads the Tigers on the ground with 83 rushing yards. Tigner averaged 7.3 yards per carry against Central Missouri. Jacob Mezera was 19-of-40 through the air for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Layne Bieberle caught eight passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Doyin Jibowu led four Tigers with double-digit tackle numbers. Jibowu had 12 total tackles with one sack. Tanner Hoekman had an interception and broke up two other passes. The game is the second of three-straight against ranked opponents for the Griffons. Next week, Missouri Western travels to No. 21 Central Missouri, pitting the Griffons against the MIAA’s top-three teams from 2017 in the first three weeks of the 2018 season. Missouri Western’s first three opponents this season combined to win 28 games last season, while the other eight teams the Griffons will play this year won a total of 34 games in 2017. Fans will find a new Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium feature this week as the Bill Snyder Pavilion debuts. On Griffon Football game days, the “Pavilion Party Deck,” is open to all fans with a ticket to the game. Fans will find food provided by VanZino’s BBQ and Anheuser-Busch products provided by Hi-Ho Bar and Grill. The pavilion was dedicated this summer in honor of the St. Joseph native and legendary Kansas State football head coach. Snyder also attended Missouri Western, briefly, when it was St. Joseph Junior College. The pavilion was conceptualized and donated by Steve Craig. 8/30 @ #5 Northwest ........................... 2018 GRIFFON FOOTBALLWEEK 2 NOTES VS FORT HAYS STATE

#GriffUp

2018 RESULTS breakdown

MWSU IN HOME OPENERS - The Griffons’ loss last week gave the program consecutive losses in season openers for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Missouri Western hasn’t lost a home opener since a 34-7 loss to eventual national champion Pittsburg State in 2011. Since 2009, Missouri Western is 8-1 in home openers and has outscored the opposition by an average score of 39-13 in those eight wins. The last time MWSU faced a ranked opponent in its home opener was Sept. 6, 2008 when the Griffons lost 47-18 to No. 17 Minnesota Duluth.

YEAR OF THE GROUND GAME? - Known for high-scoring and high-flying offenses in the recent past, the first week of the MIAA season looked more like old school football. Missouri Western entered week two of the season ranked second in the MIAA with 226 passing yards. By the end of 2017, 226 passing yards per game would have ranked MWSU eighth in the conference. Only four teams in the MIAA threw for more than 210 yards in week one, Northwest (216), Fort Hays (226), Missouri Western (226) and Central Missouri (263). Four teams in the MIAA rushed for at least 225 yards last week with Nebraska Kearney going for 474 on the ground. All but three teams rushed for more than 100 yards last week and Central Oklahoma came just one yard short of making it just two under 100.

RESULTS BETTER THAN RANKING - The low passing totals last week around the MIAA left the Griffon pass defense ranked eighth in the MIAA after holding Northwest to 216 yards passing. Last year, Missouri Western ranked 5th in pass defense, allowing 212 yards per game. Two long touchdowns made up for almost half of Northwest’s passing total last week. The Griffons gave up a 52-yard and a 60-yard touchdown pass last week, meaning Northwest threw for just 114 yards in the rest of the game. Missouri Western’s pass defense limited the Bearcats to just six passing first downs and 16 completions on the night.

HUSKEY’S BACK - Redshirt senior linebacker James Huskey missed the entire 2017 season due to an injury suffered in the spring of 2016. He didn’t seem to miss a beat in his return to the field last week at Northwest. Huskey led the Griffons with eight total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. As a junior in 2016, Huskey was one of the top at his position in the MIAA. The second team All-MIAA selection was second in the MIAA with 16.5 tackles for loss and second on the team with 90 tackles. Huskey also tied for the team lead in 2016 with 3.5 sacks.

THE GREAT WALL OF ST. JOSEPH - Missouri Western may feature one of the most talented and experienced offensive lines in the MIAA. Hayden Eatinger moved to center this year after a second team All-MIAA season (2017), an honorable mention selection (2016) and 22-straight starts at guard the last two seasons. Shawn Rouse started his 23-straight game at left tackle last week after an honorable men-tion All-MIAA nod last season. Isaiah Colbert will be the opening day starter at right tackle after starting two games at the position as a true sophomore last season. As talented and experienced as the group is, it’s still young. Tanner Hale is the only senior listed on the two-deep for MWSU along the offensive line. Rouse, Jared DeVoe, Eatinger, Jacob Olson and Colbert are all juniors. Four of the five reserves listed on the two-deep are redshirt freshmen. The unit helped MWSU rank second in rushing yards and fourth in sacks allowed in the MIAA last season. Most of the offensive line was also part of the group that paved the way for the conference’s leading rushing team in 2016. Last week against Northwest, the Griffons didn’t allow a sack.

MARINO LINES UP IN THE PISTOL - It’s a line Griffon fans are likely to hear from the voice of the Griffons, Dave Riggert, throughout the 2018 season. Dave Brown, whose mentor Chris Ault popular-ized the rare offense at the University of Nevada, Reno, will call plays for MWSU in 2018. The versatile formation pulls from the traditional shotgun and I formations with elements of a single back offense. The quarterback typically lines up just four yards behind the center, allowing him to read the defense well, but still have space for passing situations. Believed to have been invented by Jerry Glanville while he was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Brown was an assistant at Nevada when the Wolf Pack became the first team in NCAA history with three 1,000-yard rushers in the same season (2009). Brown also wit-nessed the pistol help Colin Kaepernick become the only player in NCAA history to throw for 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 in a career. Now Brown has Marino who rushed for more yards than any quarterback in the MIAA last season - in just nine games and only seven starts. Behind Marino this year with diverse skill sets. Shamar Griffith started the final three games of 2017 as a true freshman, going for 111 yards at Emporia State in week 11. Derek Gray, a senior do-all back, has seven career rushing touchdowns as a reserve the past three seasons. That duo is joined by Western Illinois James Bailey Jr. who impressed coaches in the offseason. Bailey torched defenses for 30 touchdowns as a dual-threat quarterback at Wil-liam Chrisman High School where he was also a four-time state medalist in track and field.

NFL BLOODLINES - No, Griffon quarterback Dom Marino is not related to NFL Hall of Fame quarter-back Dan Marino. But, several of his teammates do have NFL Bloodlines. Wide receiver Joe Horn Jr.’s father, Joe, is a member of the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame. The senior Horn made four Pro Bowls in seven seasons with the Saints. Horn set the Saints career record with 50 receiving touchdowns and had the second most receptions (523) and receiving yards (7,622) in Saints history. Fellow receiver Elijah Cunningham is the nephew of four-time NFL All-Pro quarterback Randall Cunningham. Randall led the NFL in passer rating in 1998 with the Eagles. His nephew led the Griffons with 308 receiving yards last season. Arnold Crayton’s uncle, Neil Smith, was once a teammate of Joe Horn’s with the Chiefs. Crayton will start at defensive end for the Griffons after a redshirt season in 2017. His uncle was one of the most feared edge pass rushers in the NFL throughout the 90s. Smith led the NFL in sacks in 1993 and was a five-time NFL All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection, winning two Super Bowls with the Broncos.
