Biography:

George Duke Humphrey was born in Tippah County, Mississippi on August 30, 1897. He

graduated from Tippah County Agricultural High School in 1915 and attended the Mississippi

State Teacher College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) and received his BA from

Blue Mountain College in 1929, with majors in English, history and education. He received his

MA from the University of Chicago, in 1931, in educational administration. He next received

his doctorate in land-grant college and university administration from Ohio State University in

1939.

During his educational process, Humphrey was establishing a career as an educator. He began

teaching right out of high school in 1915. He was then promoted to school principal, system

superintendent, as well as an athletic coach. He was briefly an instructor at Furman University in

South Carolina, was named high school supervisor for the Mississippi State Department of

Education from 1932 to 1933. In July of 1934 he was named the ninth president of Mississippi

State College. During his tenure as President, Humphrey established the Department of Forestry,

the Department of Accounting, Management, and Economics, the Graduate School, emphasized

the arts at the college, and helped to usher the university through the Great Depression and

World War II.

Humphrey left Mississippi State in 1945 for the Presidency at the University of Wyoming, where

he remained until his retirement in 1964. Dr. Humphrey died in Laramie, Wyoming, September

10, 1973.

The George Duke Humphrey collection is arranged alphabetically. It contains a combination of

correspondence and subject files from 1934-1945. Subjects include: athletics, agricultural

education, the Board of Trustees, civilian defense, enrollment, vocational education, and the War

effort.
