MEET THE TROY TROJANSTroy enters the game with a 1-3 ledger following its 81-70 setback at Texas-San Antonio on Monday MSU marks the second SEC team the Trojans have played this year. On Nov. 15, they dropped a 79-60 decision at Alabama. Their win came in the season opener against Huntingdon, 100-59.

ALL-SEC HONORSIn the preseason polls that were an-nounced back in October, Mississippi State had two players receive All-SEC honors as voted on by the league coaches. Junior point guard Dee Bost was tabbed fi rst team, while senior Ravern Johnson received second-team accolades. Neither made the media selections.


MSU ENJOYS MORE NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Including last year’s 13-4 mark in non-conference action, coupled with this season’s 3-0 record, Mississippi State has compiled a 138-42 (.767) record against non-conference opponents during the Rick Stansbury era (since 1998-99), including a 128-33 (.795) regular-season mark.

MISSISSIPPI STATE’S RECORD WHEN . . . During the Rick Stansbury era, the Bulldogs are: 204-31 (2-0) when leading at halftime; 176-33 (1-0) when shooting 45 percent or better from the fi eld; 216-67 (2-0 this year) when the opposition shoots less than 45 percent from the fi eld; 202-73 (2-0) when out-rebounding or tying oppo-nents; and 155-28 (1-0) when holding opponents to 65 points or less.

NOVEMBER DOMINANCE UNDER STANSBURY Including last year’s 4-2 mark, coupled with this year’s 3-0 record, the Bulldogs are 48-16 (.750) in the month of November since Rick Stansburywas named head coach. Dating back to the 1986-87 season when Richard Williams was over-seeing the program, Mississippi State owns a composite ledger of 74-19 (.796) in November.

BOMBS AWAY . . . AGAIN AND AGAIN Last year, Mississippi State set a single-season record with 296 made 3-pointers, an average of 8.2 an outing. In just three game this year, the Bulldogs are already ahead of that pace. Aainst Tennessee State, Appalachian State and Detroit, MSU drained 28 of its 72 attempts. Last year, Ravern Johnson led MSU with 87 3-pointers on 214 at-tempts, exceeding his total of 83 in 2008-09, the third-most in school his-tory. Darryl Wilson currently holds the top two spots with 97 in 1996 and 94 in 1995. And like his team, Johnson is ahead of schedule. Through three games, he is 11-of-21 beyond the arc.

1,000 POINT CLUB WELCOMES NEWEST MEMBER It didn’t take Ravern Johnson long to reach one of the biggest mile-stones in his career - becoming the 32nd member of the 1,000-point club. In the season opener against Tennessee State, the senior from Lyon, Miss., scored a career-high 32 points to give him exactly 1,000 for his career. He now has 1,044 for his career to rank 31st all-time. His induction into the club came on two free throws with 18 seconds left in the game against Tennessee State. He is now just fi ve points shy of passing Lawrence Roberts for the 30th most in school history. Larry Fry is currently 29th at 1,079 points.

MEET THE HEAD COACH

Rick Stansbury, 13th year

Consistency is a key ingredient to the recent success enjoyed by the Mississippi State University basketball program, one that is stressed in the players’ daily activities on and off the basketball fl oor that has translated into the program’s recent run of national promi-

nence gained under head coach Rick Stansbury. That consistency was brought to the forefront three years ago when MSU’s 13th-year head basketball coach became the all-time winningest basketball coach in school history, surpassing Richard Williams’ mark of 191. Now with a 13-year coaching record of 258-140 at the Bulldog helm, the 14th-most wins in SEC history, Stansbury has guided 10 State squads (6 NCAA & 4 NIT) to postseason tournament appearances and nine clubs to 20-plus wins campaigns. MSU has averaged 21.3 wins the last six years (2005-10), including winning an outright SEC overall championship in 2004, along with back-to-back SEC West crowns in the 2003-2004 and 2007-2008 seasons an another in 2010, and SEC Tournament titles in 2002 and 2009. Most recently, Stansbury piloted last year’s 24-12 State squad to its seventh SEC Western divi-sion crown in school history en route to advancing to the NIT, where the Bulldogs lost to North Carolina in the second round. From 2001-05, he guided MSU to fi ve-consecutive postseason tournament appearances for the fi rst time in school history, including a streak of four straight NCAA Tournament berths from 2002 through 2005.

MSU KNOWS HOW TO WIN GAMES AT ‘THE HUMP’ Over the course of the last decade, Mississippi State’s Humphrey Coliseum has become a diffi cult venue for opposing teams. With the 13-4 mark last year, the Bull-dogs have reached twin-digit home wins during each of coach Rick Stansbury’s fi rst 12 seasons at the MSU helm. Mississippi State is now 151-37 (.803) overall at Humphrey Coliseum under Stansbury’s direction, including a 71-25 (.740) SEC mark and a 80-12 (.870) record against non-conference opponents. The Bulldogs have compiled a 35-season composite record of 357-135 (.726) at “The Hump” since Mississippi State’s basketball facility opened prior to the 1975-76 campaign.

BULLDOGS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY SIGNING PERIOD

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State’s 2010-11 signing class got off to a resounding start with the signing of wings Rodney Hood and D.J. Gardner and point guard Deville Smith. All three were named to the Clarion Ledger’s prestigious Dandy Dozen, and all three are considered Top 100 players overall nationally. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound Hood, a two-time Mississippi player of the year, averaged 22.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists last year as a junior and scored a record 34 points in the Mississippi High School All-Star Game. He led the Wildcats to a 26-7 record en route to advancing to the Class 6A championship game. Listed as a fi ve-start recruit, Rivals.com rates him as the 21st best player overall nationally, while ESPN has him at No. 30, followed by Scout.com at No. 49. Joining Hood is his AAU teammate, Smith, a 5-11, 160-pound guard out of Callaway. As a junior, Smith led his team to a second-straight Class 5A crown and averaged 22.4 points, 4.0 steals and 3.5 assists. He hit the game-winning shot against Provine at the buzzer to win the championship, while scoring a career-high 48 points against New Hope in the North 5A fi nals. Rated as a 4-star recruit, he’s listed as the 40th best overall player in the country by ESPN and 63rd best by Rivals.com. Rounding out the early signing period class is Okolona’s D.J. Gardner, who is noted for his long-range shooting The 6-7, 195-pound standout totaled 24.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals a contest as the Chieftains posted a 25-6 ledger and advanced to the North 1A semifi -nals. His season-high of 40 points came against Ingomar. They fi nished the season ranked No. 5 in the Class 1A rankings. Gardner also stood out in the Mississippi High School All-Star Game, where he poured in 16 points. A 4-star recruit, Rivals.com has him as the 60th player in the country, while ESPN has him at No. 91.

The teams played a nip-and-tuck battle Saturday with the Bulldogs trying a num-ber of lineups and combinations.. MSU sprinted to a quick 7-2 advantage as Ravern Johnson scored the fi rst seven points. The Blue Raiders responded with a 16-6 run to open a 18-13 advantage with 11:02 left in the fi rst half. An Elgin Bailey dunk sparked the crowd and brought the Bulldogs back even at 18-18. The Blue Raiders continued to hold the upper hand, eventually easing out to a 34-27 lead on a Justin Archie fast-break layup with 2:37 left before halftime. The Bulldogs closed the lead to 36-34 at the half. In the second frame, a Johnson 3-point basket capped a 16-5 run, giving the hosts a 50-41 advantage with 13:37 left. The Blue Raiders slowly chipped away and took a 62-61 lead on a Charles Baker jumper with 6:50 left. But a pair of Kodi Augustus free throws gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 68-66 with 2:30 remaining. The Blue Raiders were held the fi nal 3:25 without a basket.

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State’s Ravern Johnson poured in a career high 32 points as the Bulldogs defeated Ten-nessee State 75-65 in the season opener. With his monster night, Johnson also became the 32nd Bulldog in program his-tory to score 1,000 career points. The Bulldogs won the contest on the defensive end, breaking away from a 31-all halftime tie with a decisive 15-4 run in the back stretch of the game’s fi nal half. The Bulldogs scored the game’s fi rst fi ve points and actually held some type of lead until TSU’s Robert Covington drained a 3-point basket placing the Ti-gers on top, 18-17. The lead would then be possessed by the visitors until Shaun Smith drained a 3-point basket as the half expired, forcing the 31-all tie. Johnson took matters in his own hands in the fi nal half, tallying 25 points, includ-ing four treys. The Bulldogs built a 40-33 lead with 16:29 remaining, only to see the Tigers go back up 46-44 with 9:14 left. Back-to-back 3’s by Johnson gave the Maroon and White the lead for good. The 15-4 run was capped by Johnson’s fi nal trey. That basket placed the Bulldogs on top 62-51 with 4:00 remaining.

The Bulldogs trailed 73-64 before a frantic fi nal 2:00, which saw them close out the win with a 12-1 run. Brian Bryant sank three free throws to bring the MSU within 74-73. After Don-ald Sims missed a 3-pointer, the Bull-dogs traveled with the rebound. On the inbounds, Twany Beckham got the steal and fed Steele, who streaked uncontest-ed to the basket for the go-ahead points. The frantic fi nish seemed highly un-likely after the opening half. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the fi eld in the fi rst 20 minutes. MSU scored the fi rst fi ve points of the game and only trailed once in the opening half, at 6-5. The Bulldogs led by as many as 13 be-fore settling for a 43-32 halftime lead. The Mountaineers stormed back in the fi nal half, ignited by an 18-6 run was capped by a putback from Sims for a 50-49 lead with 13:36 remaining. The Bulldogs converted 50 percent of their shot attempts in the fi nal half and never trailed over the fi nal 28 minutes of play. One Bulldog not letting down is se-nior sharp shooter Ravern Johnson, who scored 25 points on a 10-for-15 night from the fl oor with three 3-pointers. Johnson has now gone 19 points or better in each of the fi rst three games of the season. In a role reversal of Friday’s 76-74 win against Appalachian State, the Bulldogs built the big lead and held on for dear life. Johnson’s fi nal trey ran the Maroon and White advantage to a game-best 12 points at 73-61 with 5:41 remaining. Still, the Titans crawled back within 76-73 on a Jason Calliste layup with 1:14 re-maining. The Titans got no closer. Again, it was a three-point spread at 79-76 when UD’s Chase Simon missed the back end of two free throw attempts with nine sec-onds remaining. Jalen Steele hit two free throws and Johnson one more to seal the victory. Both teams were hot in the open-ing half. The Bulldogs hit their fi rst four 3-point attempts and sprinted out to an 18-12 advantage. The Titans reeled off 10 straight points to take a 22-18 advantage with 12:44 left before halftime and went into the break up 40-32.
