The Braves send right-hander Andrew Thurman to the hill against Generals right-hander Jordan Pries. LAST TIME OUT: Mississippi took the lead just in time, scoring twice in the sixth inning before the rain came to take down the Jacksonville Suns 2-1 in a rain-shortened series finale. The win gave Mississippi the series victory 3-2 and first place in the early second half standings. Left-hander Sean Newcomb went the full six innings, allowing a run on six hits, striking out six and walking two for his fourth win of the year. Right-hander Jake Esch suffered the loss for Jacksonville, allowing two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. Carlos Franco provided the game-winning hit as the storms rolled in, a two-run single in the sixth to erase a 1-0 deficit. Jacksonville took the lead in the third inning on a Yefri Perez single to left, and a throwing error by Franco brought home Cam Maron. AFTER THE INTERMISSION: The M-Braves have been a second-half team dating back to the earliest days of the team’s history, finishing with a better second-half record in eight consecutive seasons. All time, the club is 379-378 (.501) after the All-Star Break, as opposed to 399-434 (.479) in the first half. A NIGHT WITH THE STARS: The Mississippi Braves are coming off hosting the Southern League All-Star Game for the first time since 2007, with the South Division earning a 5-1 win over the North Division Tuesday night at Trustmark Park thanks to a couple of Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Outfielder and MVP Phillip Ervin slugged a grand slam off Smokies pitcher Brad Markey in the fifth to put the game away 5-0, while RHP Barrett Astin picked up the win for the South. For the Braves, Dansby Swanson finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Dustin Peterson went 0-for-4. A WHALE OF A TALE: Rob Whalen has posted a string of fine starts to carry the M- Braves rotation into late-June. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.65 ERA in his last nine starts (11 ER in 60 IP), dragging his ERA down to 2.43, good for fifth-best in the Southern League. HIS NAME IS DUSTIN PETERSON: Dustin Peterson’s 18-game on-base streak came to an end on Thursday night with an 0-4 showing. The M-Braves outfielder had his 13-game hit streak ended on Saturday night with an 0-for-2 day. Over the hit streak, Peterson batted .423 (22-52) with a .466 on-base percentage (5 BB, 0 HBP, 1 SF) and slugging .638 (4 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR). Peterson’s RBI streak ended at 6 games on Thursday night, falling three short of Seth Loman’s 2014 record of 9 games, set June 21-29, 2014. SMORGASBORD OF SWATS: Dansby Swanson’s solo home run on Thursday night was the 38th team home run of the season, matching the 2015 full-season total of 38. The club is on pace for 75 home runs, which would be 13 shy of the team’s all-time record set at 88 in the championship season of 2008. Dustin Peterson and Jacob Schrader led the team in the first half with seven each. SOLO BOMBS: The M-Braves have 38 home runs this year, but 29 have been solo shots, with seven two-run homers and two three-run home runs. Levi Hyams hit the first home run with multiple people on base on May 23 at Mobile, a three-run homer to give the M-Braves a 3-0 lead. TODAY’S GAME Thurman takes the hill in the series opener at Jackson on Wednesday night.

LAST TIME OUT Thurman struggled with his command, walking six in the first inning and retiring just

two batters before being pulled on June 23 against Jacksonville. He allowed seven runs on just one hit over 2/3rds of an inning, and the M-Braves went on to an 8-3 loss to the Suns to open the second half.

AGAINST THE GENERALS This will be Thurman’s second career start against Jackson, firing six shutout innings

on June 10 with just three hits allowed. He took a no-decision as the M-Braves blew a four-run lead in the ninth, but Mississippi found a walkoff winner in the 14th, 6-5, on a single by Matt Lipka.
