PAN AM GAMES SECRETARiAT WANTS You To “EMBRACE THE SPiRiT” oF THE ToRoNTo 2015 PAN AM/PARAPAN AM GAMES! Last week the Pan Am Games Secretariat picked “Embrace the Spirit” as the theme of the games for the Host First Nation. One of several possible themes, Chief Bryan LaForme quickly saw this as the one that best exemplified Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation’s participation in the 41 country sporting event. “When I think of Embrace the Spirit, I think – games and culture/spirituality.” MNCFN Executive Assistant Debbie Aaron also commented, “The first thing that came to mind last week when the Chief & I were talking was: Respect, Strength and Humility. My husband is a traditional ojibway teacher and the above are 3 of his teachings. There, these words embody traditional teachings and are also universal to mankind – and could easily apply to the games.”

Scotiabank is proud to provide an opportunity for the Youth of the Mississaugas of The New Credit First Nation to attend the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games.

The Pan Am flame has officially begun its

journey across Canada! The flame began

its journey in Teotihuacan, Mexico at the

Pyramid of the Sun. The ceremony featured

an ancient ceremonial lighting of the torch

by the Aztecs, and included a passing of the

torch to the official Canadian representatives

to begin it’s travel to the Toronto 2015 Pan

Am/Parapan Am Games.

Toronto 2015 representatives, the Mexico

Olympic Committee and various consulate

members and dignitaries were in attendance

at the ceremony to officially light the Pan

Am torch and to signify the beginning of

the torch relay. Mississaugas of the New

Credit First Nation Chief Bryan LaForme,

and Elder Garry Sault, were in attendance to

participate in the flame lighting ceremony

and to represent the official host first nation

of the Toronto 2015 games.

Over the next 41 days after the official

arrival to Canada on May 30th, the torch

will visit over 130 communities across

Canada. The majority of stops are scheduled

to be in Ontario but Montreal, QC; Calgary,

AB; Richmond, BC; and Winnipeg, MB, will

also receive the flame. The final stop of the

torch will be in Toronto on Day 41 and will

mark the official opening of the Toronto

2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games on July

10th. The Canadian Press Images PHOTO/TO2015

MiSSiSSAuGAS oF THE NEW CREDiT ATTEND DAY 1 ToRCH ARRivAL CELEBRATioN!On Saturday May 30th, Mississaugas of the New Credit Chief

and Council, community members and Pan Am Games

Secretariat staff travelled to Harbourfront Centre located in

downtown Toronto to officially welcome the Pan Am torch to

Canada!

The torch was flown from Mexico to Harbourfront Centre

in Toronto where it was met by canoes filled with members

of all four represented first nations to accept the flame to the

Mississaugas traditional territory. Members of Six Nations of

the Grand River, Metis Nation of Ontario and Huron-Wendat

were also present to welcome the Pan Am torch to the shores of

Toronto.

Chief Bryan LaForme was the first representative to accept the

torch to Canada and to the Mississaugas of the New Credit

First Nation traditional territory. Chief LaForme opened the

ceremony with a speech and encouraged all to embrace the

spirit of the games. “As chief of the Mississaugas I welcome you

to our traditional lands for sport, and an opportunity to forge

closer relationships among all 41 countries. The Mississauagas

of the New Credit First Nation has a theme for these games…

‘Embrace the Spirit’. Embrace the Spirit of health competition,

and embrace the spirit of kinship with each other and our ties

to the earth.”

Following the ceremony at Harbourfront Centre, the torch

relay began with twenty official Toronto 2015 torchbearers

transporting the torch to the Distillery District. Celebrations

continued as the torch was met by Col. Chris Hadfield, and

was welcomed with music and entertainment despite the rainy

weather conditions. Over the next 40 days the torch will travel

5,000+ KM throughout Canada and will be welcomed by 130

communities.
