Courses: Subject Requirements
COMMUNITY Mission Vista High School is located in a suburban community approximately 25 miles north of San Diego and is part of the Vista Unified School District, which consists of three compre-hensive high schools, an independent study program, and two continuation schools. As a school of choice, Mission Vista serves students residing throughout the District boundaries, as well as some students who choose to attend the school on inter-district transfer agree-ments from neighboring communities. The school serves a community that has a wide range of social, cultural, ethnic, economic, and educational diversity.
SCHOOL Mission Vista High School is a public, comprehensive, dual-magnet high school; the school opened in 2009 and currently serves 1,660 students. MVHS operates on a “4x4” block sched-ule, in which students are enrolled in eight classes per school year. The year is split into two terms (Fall and Spring), and students take four classes per term. Every term-long class is the equivalent to a year-long class at schools operating on a traditional bell schedule.
ACADEMIC INFORMATION Mission Vista High School is a dual magnet high school with emphasis in the areas of Arts & Communication/Science & Technology. We offer a wide and rich curriculum with a total of seventeen Advanced Placement courses and thirteen Honors courses. Students also take courses in core curricular areas as electives, such as Psychology, Creative Writing, A Socio-Political History of Rock and Roll, Computer Science, Project Lead the Way Biomedical Scienc-es and Engineering, Speech and Debate, Discrete Math , Data Science, etc. The 4x4 schedule allows students to explore coursework that aligns to their strengths, inter-
ests, and values, and our academic focus as a school is centered around personalizing learn-
ing for students. During their senior year, students may take our site capstone course, My
Vision Personalized, in which they design, plan, and execute a project that reflects some of
the learning they have done over their four years in high school.
In addition to the courses that we offer, students are able to take advanced and special inter-est courses through concurrent enrollment in our district and in local community colleges.
