Second Sunday of Easter

We are all familiar with the wonderful characters created by A. A. Milne in his stories of Winnie the Pooh. Each had his or her own traits and personalities, but there is something charming about Eeyore, the gray donkey with the pessimistic nature. While he was a part of the group, he was equally satisfied with going off by himself, muttering about how bad things were. One can't but help think of Eeyore when reading about the apostle Thomas. In today's Gospel reading from John, we are again introduced to Thomas. He was not with the disciples when Jesus first appeared to them after the Resurrection; instead he was off by himself, fearful for his safety and deeply saddened by the loss of his friend and teacher. Not believing the others had seen Jesus, he only proclaimed "My Lord and my God!" after seeing him himself. This is our challenge; to reach out to those who doubt the most. Thomas, though, was only the last of them to doubt. Remember, these believers had just experienced the Passion and death on the cross; so great was their grief, one can imagine that the Resurrection seemed impossible (CCC 643). But, as with all things having a purpose, it was through Jesus' appearance to them in their time of doubt that their faith was born. Look around you for signs of life; remove whatever doubt you may have that such signs are anything but a gift of the promise of new life in Christ.

Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: April 17: Rev. Frank A. Seimetz (1965) April 19: Rev. Hilary S. Halter, OFM (1983) April 21: Rev. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A taxpayer received a strongly worded "second notice" that his taxes were overdue. Hastening to the collector's office, he paid his bill, saying apologetically that he had overlooked the first notice. "Oh," confided the collector with a smile, "we don't send out first notices any more. We have found that the second notices are more effective."

MANY THANKS! Thank you for your generosity in last week’s Easter Sunday collection. We deposited $67,955.78 in the bank. I am always so overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you for your continued support of all that goes on here at St. Thomas More. God bless you!

WHY IS MASS ON HOLY SATURDAY SO LATE? Every year there are some parishioners who come to church on Holy Saturday evening and are surprised to see no cars or people here for a 5:30 p.m. Mass. They always ask why Mass is so late on Holy Saturday. Did you know that is not just some whim of the priests at any parish? Actually, the time for the Vigil Mass of Easter is always determined by the Church and the information is disseminated to its priests. The Vigil Mass of Easter is not allowed to begin until after sundown on Holy Saturday evening. Why is that? If you think about all that happens at the Mass, you can intuit the answer rather quickly. After all, what is the very first thing that happens at the Vigil Mass of Easter? The blessing of the fire. After the fire is blessed the blessing of and lighting of the Pascal Candle takes place. The Pascal Candle represents Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Since we are blessing the fire and candle to represent Christ as the light, it takes on much more importance as a symbol if we wait until dark. And so we have the beginning of the Vigil Mass of Easter set after sunset. This is the only Mass in the liturgical calendar to be determined specifically by sunset.

ON A SEPARATE NOTE Many of us were conscious of a noticeable increase in attendance in the services of the Triduum — The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Vigil Mass of Easter on Holy Saturday. I take this opportunity to thank all of you who accepted the invitation extended to you at Mass on Palm Sunday to “do Easter right” in terms of attending and celebrating all three days of the Triduum. Hopefully you were able to see how the three days went together and, in the process, see the faith of the Church unfold in front of your eyes.

THANK YOU Easter is definitely one of the “goodie times” of the year. To that end, I say thank you to all of you who sent me cards, who gave me Easter sweets and other gifts, or who assured me that I was in their prayers over the holy days of Easter. God bless you for your kindness and generosity to me.

God's Word God's word is both comforting and challenging. We are comforted in knowing that we are loved and redeemed by the Lord Jesus. We are challenged to respond to that loving redemption by following in the footsteps of the Lord, that life of acting justly, loving tenderly, and walking humbly with our God. We express this life specifically by being good caretakers of God's gifts. We live discipleship by lives of joyful generosity.

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY

The star magnolias droop from their twigs like snow drops in February. The golden daffodils and majestic pink and purple tulips bow over to the fickle weather. But they are all very resilient and determened to return to rise again. It is their nature. Their color and glory may be gone now, but their leaves will come and they will grow and flower again. In the past weeks I have caused to think of the writer Andre Dubus. I have mentioned his name before. I still have not unpacked his short stories; they are still in boxes in my sister’s basement. But his words speak from those depths. Dubus suffered many losses in his 63 years. Many family tragedies, three divorces, depression, the loss of his legs but he never lost his faith. A faith he described as a belief that God never stops believing in you. Throughout his life he had a deep devotion to the Eucharist. This rooted-ness is what kept him going. He wrote in the short story “On Charon’s Wharf” from the anthology Broken Vessels: “Since we are all terminally ill, each breath and step one day closer to the last, I must consider those sacraments which soothe our passage … this morning I received the sacrament I still believe in: at seven-fifteen the priest elevated the host, then the chalice, and spoke the words of the ritual, and the bread became flesh, the wine became blood, and minutes later I placed on my tongue the taste of forgiveness and of love that affirmed, perhaps celebrated my being alive, my being mortal…my belief in the sacrament of the Eucharist is simple: without touch, God is a monologue, an idea, a philosophy; he must touch and be touched, the tongue on the flesh, and that touch is the result of the monologues, the ideas, the philosophies which led to faith; but in the instant of the touch there is no place or thinking, for talking; the silent touch affirms all that, and goes deeper; it affirms the mysteries of love and mortality.” This is the faith that Dubus found again and again to fight his depression, his infirmities, his losses. He came to God each morning. His faith was living and life giving. He was resilient to all kinds of weather. He was very human. He needed very much the nourishment and the reassurance of God’s love and forgiveness. He found that he needed to be in contact with God. To feel, to touch, to taste God. Sunday’s reading has a character we all heard of who also needed to touch and feel God, Thomas. God came back to allow Thomas to touch him and then believe. God does the same for us. He comes to us in the Eucharist and allows us to touch, feel, and taste him but we first need to come to the “room”. Come to the room and touch and be touched. You cannot enjoy the feast unless you come to the feast. The gospel seems to indicate that Thomas only needed to see and touch the Lord once and then he believed from that point on. Most of us are like Andre Dubus though. We need to daily touch, feel, and taste the Lord (at least weekly in the Eucharist) because we sin daily. We need to come back again and again to the God who never stops believing in us.

Food & Volunteer Request for SVDP Once again the pantry of St. Vincent de Paul is getting very low on items that we give to our clients. We are asking our parishioners to be generous with donations of toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, toothpaste, hand soap, laundry detergent, tuna, jelly, peanut butter, cake mixes, jello, meal helpers, rice, pancake mix, canned fruit, vegetables, sugar, flour, etc. By your generosity, you help those who are in need, and fulfill Jesus’ command to help feed the hungry. We are also in need of volunteers to help deliver food to our clients. By becoming a member of a team, you would be committed to one week a month to be on call for food deliveries. We encourage anyone interested to come to a meeting and see what we are about. Our meetings are twice a month, the second and fourth Wednesday, at 6:30 pm. The meeting date and time are also listed in the Sunday bulletin. This is a wonderful opportunity to live out the Gospel life that God calls us to.

ST. THOMAS MORE PASTORAL COUNCIL

Have you considered membership on the St. Thomas More Pastoral Council? Five members will be chosen on May 27, 2007 at the 10:00 am Mass. All nominees will be required to attend discernment meetings that will take place on May 8, May 15, & May 22. The discernment meetings will give the candidates an opportunity to learn more about the Pastoral Council and meet the other members of the Pastoral Council. The Pastoral Council members include parishioners who are willing to participate in prayer and spiritual formation, are willing to listen to others and new ideas, understand and accept the mission of our parish, are open to views of others, are willing to work as a team member, and are willing to make a commitment of time and talent to the Council, the Parish and the Church. Pastoral Council members meet once a month, and also participate in Commission meetings. The nomination period will begin on April 21st and end on April 29th at 1:30 pm, and nomination forms will be in next weeks’ bulletin. Ballots can be completed and placed in the red boxes at the church entrances or the Parish Office.

Who is Man for Woman and Who is Woman for Man?

Fr. Thomas J. Loya, STB., MA. Sunday, May 6, 2007

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm St. Thomas More Church

Who is Man for Woman and Who is Woman for Man? Come and hear a penetrating exploration into the archetypes and “hardwiring” of maleness and femaleness according to the Divine Order. Using the language of the “Theology of the Body”, Fr. Thomas J. Loya demonstrates how and why God created men and women with different yet complimentary physical, spiritual and intellectual characteristics. This insightful and entertaining presentation will prove to be a revelation for married couples and single adults alike.
