Newsletter Tips and JudgingDesign & Layout Fundamental Elements and Principles of Design are:

- Line - Shape - Volume -Texture - Color - Format

- Balance - Emphasis - Rhythm - Unity - Space

Why do we need creative design and layout?1) To make boring material more interesting

2) To have a visual representation of something

3) To draw attention to our work

4) To communicate an idea

About Color – Suggestions1) Choose colors appropriate for your design concept

2) Make sure the colors will enhance the readability of the type

3) Examine the amount of color in your design. Create visual impact?

4) Create color sketches (i.e. change colors used in the project) see which look best

5) When designing on a computer that colors may appear differently when printed

6) Keep complimentary colors in mind

Complimentary Colors – Those located directly across from each other on the color

wheel: Red – Green Orange – Blue Violet – Yellow

Balance- Equal distribution of weight

- Holds together, feels harmonious, looks unified

- Imbalance can make us feel uncomfortable

EmphasisWays to make something a focal point1) Make it the brightest

2) Make is a different color

3) Make it in a color if everything else is in black and white, or vice versa

4) Make it go in a different direction

5) Position it differently

6) Give it a texture or a different texture than other elements

7) Arrange all the elements to lead to it

8) Make it a different shape than the other elements

9) Isolate it

10) Make it clear and the other elements hazy

Page 19: Mission Statement · Web viewPg. 01 Mission Statement Table of Contents National Corvette Museum Tel 270-781-7973 Fax 270-781-5286 350 Corvette DrBowling Green, KY 42101 stephanie@corvettemuseum.org

Pg. 17 Mission StatementMission Statement

11) Reverse it

12) Make it an opaque color and the other colors transparent

13) Make it glossy and the other elements dull

To Establish a Visual Hierarchy1) Decide on the importance of the elements

2) Use factors such as position, size, value, color and visual weight to make sure your

audience sees these elements in the order of importance

3) Create a flow of information from the most important element to the least

UnityThe elements in a design look as though they belong together. Viewer wants to see unity rather

than unrelated parts.

Correspondence: repeat an element (like color or shape), or establish a style

Continuity: create similarities in form (website, newsletter, etc. match)

Variety: can have continuity but variety (i.e. the layout is the same, but you use a variation of

the colors)

Alignment: visual connections can be made between and among elements, shapes and objects

when their edges or axes line up. The eye can pick up the relationship between the forms

- Flush left / ragged right: text that aligns to the left side and is uneven on the right

- Justified: type that aligns on the left and right sides

- Flush right / ragged left: text that aligns on the right side and is uneven on the left

Centered

- Flow: elements should be arranged so that the audience is led from one element to

another through the design. Remember the ‘Z’ or backwards ‘S’ idea… your eyes scan

a page in a ‘Z’ pattern so the elements create flow and movement.

Typeface• Carefully consider the format; if type is designed for a poster is should be readable

from a distance.

• Design type in a visual hierarchy. People tend to read the biggest elements first; they

tend to read headlines or titles first, subtitles or pull quotes second, then captions and

finally text type.

• Type arrangement or alignment should enhance readability.

• Letter spacing, word spacing and line spacing all factor into readability, communication

and expression. Never depend on automatic spacing.

• Color should enhance the message and expression and not hinder readability.

• Typography should be appropriate for the message and audience.

• Rather than mixing fonts, consider using variations of one font (size, color, italics, bold,

underline, etc.).

Pg. 18 Mission StatementMission Statement

• Avoid novelty or decorative typefaces

Factors that enhance legibility1) Positive and negative space relationships

2) Distinctiveness of individual letters

3) Thoughtful letter, word and line spacing

4) Strong value contrast between letters and background

5) Word placement to encourage eye movement in the correct reading sequence.

Collections and ExhibitsExhibits and Visitor Experience:

The exhibit hall currently hosts Kentucky:225 Years on the Move, an exhibit celebrating 225 years of transportation history in Kentucky. The exhibit will be up through May 2018.

In 2018, we will begin doing much needed upgrades to exhibits. We will be refreshing several areas within the museum to refresh exhibit appearances as well as enhance the stories told about Corvette and its history.

We are acquiring a C6 Corvette Racing Simulator that will be pay-to-play. The simulation will be a 4-5 minute experience and costs will be in the $8-$10 range.

We will continue to bring in member vehicles on loan for display in the museum exhibits, but are making an effort to bring out more of the unique museum owned Corvettes for exhibit.

Collections:

We are in the middle of a complete collections inventory and cataloging process of the collection. During the process, we will also rehouse and reshelf many artifacts for more secured storage.

The Library & Archives continues to collect documents related to the history of Corvette. Digitization of the Corvette build sheets continues. We will be embarking on the process of starting a collections digitization for the Library & Archives as well in 2018.

The Museum collection continues to grow as well. We have seen donations of numerous Corvettes over the last year and other 3-dimensional items related to Corvette and its history.

In 2018 the preservation of the collection will receive more focus. Derek and Daniel will begin the process of conserving many of the vehicles in the collection and ensuring they are cared for properly.

The restoration of the 1962 Corvette that fell into the sinkhole began in 2017 and is well underway. Completion of the restoration, which is being done in house, is scheduled for the anniversary of the sinkhole in 2018.

The future of Corvette starts with the kids. What better way to spark that excitement than to

send kids home with a toy Corvette? Donate one, or a hundred, we appreciate all and make

sure they get in the hands of excited children to take home from their day at the NCM.

Development and Donations

Ways to Support the National Corvette Museum

The National Corvette Museum is a not-for-profit foundation under section 501(c)(3) of the

Internal Revenue Code, which means that we are eligible to accept tax deductible donations.

We provide a donation letter or email for every cash gift made.

Cash GiftsTwice a year we mail a solicitation letter to our current and former donors and our current

members. This letter asks for continued support for the Museum. Sometimes our plea is for a

specific project and sometimes for general support for upkeep of the Museum. We offer

commemorative gifts with specific levels of donations.

Dedication OpportunitiesWe offer many opportunities to recognize or commemorate a special occasion or person.

Donations for these opportunities are also tax deductible.

Flint Wall Donations – Several years ago the Flint, Michigan Plant was torn down, and

General Motors saved the bricks for us to use for fundraising. Our facilities team built three

walls by the Assembly Plant display, and enthusiasts may make a $250 donation to place a

name on one of these bricks. The first two walls are full, and we have several bricks named on

the third and final wall.

Chevrolet Theater Seats – The seats in our Chevrolet Theater are available for naming for a

$1,000 donation.

Club Parking Lot Banners – Clubs may sponsor banners in the Museum’s parking lot for a

$500 donation. These are changed out each year, and clubs are notified via eNews when it is

time to change the banners out.

Special Gift OpportunitiesPeriodically we get some unique items that we can offer as a gift with a donation. Currently,

we have a limited number of C7 Press Kits that were given to us by General Motors to use as

fundraisers. These are available for a $500 donation. The donation amount for special gift

opportunities varies depending on the gift.

Required Minimum DistributionsFor Museum members and supporters who have reached the age of 70.5 years, there is an

opportunity to make a gift to the Museum without taking all or part of your required minimum

distribution as income.

Duntov SocietySeveral years ago we formed our Duntov Society to honor those who have included the

Museum in their estate plans. To date we have about 80 estate gift commitments from

individuals or couples who plan to leave the Museum a car, cash, or real estate.

Spire SocietyOur Spire Society recognizes donors who have contributed $25,000 or more to the Museum

cumulatively. Cash and estimated estate gifts are counted as part of the Spire Society total.

Recognition for SupportTo say thanks to our supporters, we annually host our Winner’s Circle, Duntov Society and

Spire Society evening on Friday night of our NCM Michelin Bash Event.

Winner’s Circle recognizes donors who have given $1,000 or more in the previous calendar

year. Each donor receives a lapel pin based on their level of giving. Annual giving levels are:

Crew Chief $ 1,000 - $2,499

Driver $ 2,500 - $4,999

Sponsor $ 5,000 - $9,999

Duntov Society members are invited to attend each year and are recognized their first year with

a special Duntov crystal.

Spire Society members are invited to attend each year and are recognized the first year with a

special Spire Society gift and again when they move to the next cumulative giving level.
