WHY CHOOSE EAST COAST TRAINING?

East Coast Training are part of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and have been successfully working with young people aged 14-19 for over 10 years. We were graded ”good” in November 2008 by Ofsted, which recognised the support we give to young people to help them achieve their goals. We are an approved provider by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and appear on their approved provider list. Our staff are highly trained and skilled at supporting young people. Our programmes are tailored to individuals, you learn at your own pace and can try different careers to see which one is right. We can offer specialist support in areas such as dyslexia and one to one support for young people who have additional learning needs.

We work across the Redcar & Cleveland area offering training at the De Brus Centre, Skelton and the Community Fire Station (The Fire Escape) in Redcar. Both centres have good ICT facilities with state of the art interactive whiteboards, excellent training rooms, a state of the art kitchen and fully equipped sports hall.

Our success rates have improved year on year and with the introduction of many new vocational courses we offer an exciting alternative curriculum.

WHAT WE DELIVER East Coast Training’s 14-16 curriculum offers an alternative route for some learners who find main stream education difficult. Our part-time curriculum enables East Coast Training to deliver training in small groups and offer “bite size” chunks of learning. Practical and classroom based activities are delivered to learners.

As part of the programme we deliver a range of qualifications such as GCSE Maths and English and Functional Skills Maths and English. We also work towards improving a learner’s personal and social development, aiming to reduce any barriers they may have towards learning. For Year 11 learners, we can also offer courses to improve employability skills and also offer a range of vocational courses.

Our timetables are flexible and whilst the qualification element of the timetable will not change, the opportunities available for learners will update on a termly basis. Arts sessions, linked to improving numeracy skills are being delivered during the first term, however after October half terms, staff work with the learners who will help shape the educational and developmental activities available to them.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US

Young people are referred to us from schools for a number of reasons. Our aim is to engage young people, motivate and help them get the best out of Education. Our curriculum offers an alternative route through mainstream education. We work with young people in 1:1 and small groups in order to maximise support. Young people will not only improve their Maths and English skills, but also improve their social skills and personal development.

Absences

If a young person is absent, due to sickness we ask that you contact our head office before 9.30am on 01287 659534

If possible dentist or doctor’s appointments should be made before 9.30am or after 3.30pm

If a young person fails to attend our programme, we will contact you before 10.00am

At East Coast Training we have an ethos of care, we want every young person to achieve their aspirations. Behaviour and attendance are key to improving this. We monitor attendance and behaviour very closely. Attendance reports are sent to the school on a weekly basis.

We aim to keep you as up to date as possible throughout a young person’s time with us. Termly reports are sent to the school and parents/carers that show how young people are progressing through their programme. These reports will identify any aspects of the programme that are going well, and also any that need further improvement. If we feel a young person is not getting the best out of their time at East Coast Training or we have concerns over behaviour or attendance, we may ask you to attend a case conference. The aim of this conference is to discuss any issues

CASE STUDIES

Christopher Sneesby

Chris was referred to East Coast Training by Kilton Thorpe School. Chris accessed our curriculum two days a week. When Chris first started with East Coast Training he lacked confidence in himself. Often disrupting session due to his behaviour. Eventually Chris settled down and with the help of the school it was agreed that Chris would attend East Coast Training full time. Chris was unsure what he wanted to do when he left school, but he did really enjoy cooking. East Coast Training gave Chris the opportunity to explore a level 1 cooking qualification. Chris really enjoyed this course and became a different person, he became more confident and outgoing. Chris really excelled in the kitchen and decided that he would like to look at this as a career option. East Coast Training explored the different options available with Chris and supported him in his choice to study catering at Middlesbrough College. Chis is still attending Middlesbrough College and is thoroughly enjoying his course.

Charlie Robinson

Charlie was referred to East Coast Training by Freebrough Academy. Charlie attended 5 days a week, and when she first started with us she was quite disruptive in session and often refused to do any work. Charlie has very little confidence in herself and in her ability to achieve anything. East Coast Training worked with Charlie and eventually she accessed the OCN Level 1 Childcare course. Charlie really engaged on the course and often stayed late to complete her work. Childcare helped her to realise she has a caring nature. Charlie decided that she would like to attend College when she left school. East Coast Training supported Charlie in applying for College. Charlie left East Coast Training last August to start at Redcar and Cleveland College where she is completing a Health and Social Care Level 2 course.

As part of the curriculum East Coast Training also a range of other opportunities for learners. These activities help to engage learners who may have challenging behaviour or low self-esteem and need to be re-engaged into learning.

We do this through creative arts, cookery and are looking at opportunities for putting something back into society by volunteering. There are also opportunities to participate in heritage projects that link to our communities. The opportunities available to young people change on a termly basis.

We will also be introducing the Havening technique. A technique that has the power to beat everything from stress about your career options to family issues in 10 easy steps. By getting young people to think about the problem they are facing and focus their minds on it, asking them to tap in different parts of their body, to use their eyes and touch the side of their arms.

“Enhanced reactions are driven by a chemical code. Havening alters that code”. The result is a brighter outlook and a calmer attitude towards life.
