DEAR PARISHIONERS,

"Going Out on a limb" is a familiar phrase to most of us. If you have ever climbed a tree, and then taken cautious steps away from the massive trunk onto the bigger, broader branches, and then inched yourself out onto the thinner, swaying limbs, you would know the true meaning of this phrase. Perhaps in your youthful daring days, you may had done this a time or two. Maybe it was a dare from your friends who, watching from below, may have considered you as either courageous or crazy.

This metaphor of “going out on a limb" describes the precarious position of an individual or a corporate body who takes a risk to do something out of the ordinary. Even though they maintain their identity and integrity, they step outside of their comfort zone in order to prove a point, make a profit, or capture the attention of onlookers. This action seems to evoke a fascination in the minds of some people, and a fear in the hearts of others because of the inherent risk of catastrophic failure. However, the positive results gained from those risk takers can and do make an impact upon the hearts of many, as well as on the history of humanity.

Just think of all those risk takers who went out on a limb as discoverers and explorers, inventors and innovators, scientists and surgeons, astronauts and the group that I would like to feature, the Apostles. Without these courageous and/or crazy people (depending on your perspective), we would be without the empirical data of the world around us on land, under the sea, and above our atmosphere. We would be without electricity, aviation, or cell phone communication. We would be without life-saving medicines and noninvasive surgical techniques. The same can be said about the early apostles. Without them we would be without the Church.

During the Easter season we read from the Acts of the Apostles and other Post-Resurrection accounts that shed some light on and give due credit to the Apostles. After the crucifixion of Jesus on the Cross (that which we often times refer to as a tree) the Apostles are encouraged and inspired by the Risen Lord and the Holy Spirit to "go out on a limb" of that same tree (the Cross of Christ) for the sake of the Kingdom of God.

They shared their empirical knowledge of the Risen Jesus with others as they witnessed to their lived experience of being with him up to and through his passion, death, and resurrection. We are reminded of the risks they took being faced with failure and subjected to martyrdom. They had their fair share of onlookers and naysayers. Nevertheless, they committed themselves to the continuation of Jesus’ mission by preaching his message and presenting it in their own way. They captured the attention of many who were both fascinated and fearful. Most certainly these risk-takers were considered as either courageous or crazy. But it worked! A great number was added to the Church of Christ and, as they say, the rest is history.

We, today, are still called to go out on a limb for the Lord. We do this individually by being great witnesses of faith despite the dangers we encounter. We also do this as communities of faith by taking risks to draw attention to the message of Jesus.

The community of Resurrection is stepping out of its comfort zone by exploring the possibility of building a new educational facility. This effort will help to fulfill our obligation to more effectively teach the message of Jesus through housing a formal Catholic education program for children during the day and religious education classes for all ages at night. It is part of the mission of Jesus to go, make disciples, and teach all nations. By implementing some needed improvements in a new Faith Formation Center, our hope is much the same as that of the Apostles: it is to bring people to Christ through His Church. And, like the Apostles, we think it's worth the risk...to go out on a limb. Fr. Phil Gibbs, Pastor

Jesus is talking about us! Believing without having seen Jesus’ hands and side. STEWARDSHIP “Blessed are they who have not seen, and yet believed,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. For those who have not seen to believe, however, we must be good stewards of our faith, living it joyfully and sharing it generously. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Jesus connects PEACE and FORGIVENESS in today’s Gospel. In our families we will only experience peace to the extent we forgive one another. Peace is purchased with the currency of forgiveness. When we allow our anger and pride to lock out others, we also lock out peace and harmony. MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT Are you a “Doubting Thomas?” Sometimes we doubt our beloved’s good intentions; sometimes we doubt our own ability to live up to our commitments. Trust takes time and a track record. Have you earned your beloved’s trust? Not sure? Ask.

POPE FRANCIS ‘URBI ET ORBI’ MESSAGE Excerpts from 2019 Easter reflection

"Before the many sufferings of our time, may the Lord of life not find us cold and indifferent. May he make us builders of bridges, not walls. May the One who gives us his peace end the roar of arms, both in areas of conflict and in our cities, and inspire the leaders of nations to work for an end to the arms race and the troubling spread of weaponry, especially in the economically more advanced countries.

May the Risen Christ, who flung open the doors of the tomb, open our hearts to the needs of the disadvantaged, the vulnerable, the poor, the unemployed, the marginalized, and all those who knock at our door in search of bread, refuge, and the recognition of their dignity."
