Healthy heart tips for all weather

A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors April 2013

The weather and temperature outdoors can

have a large impact on energy levels and motivation to exercise. Warm, sunny weather can beckon one outdoors, while cold or rainy weather could keep one hibernating inside‚ which is not good for the spirit or the body, including cardiovascular health.

Staying active when the weather seems to be pitted against you can be challenging. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

• Head outdoors. Instead of the regular workouts you do, consider something that makes the most of the weather outdoors. If it’s hot outside, try walking by the seaside where the ocean mist can keep you cool, or having your feet in the laps of water reaching the sand. Don a raincoat and take a brisk walk around the neighbourhood.

If it’s cold outdoors or if there’s residual snow, sledding or skiing remain fun ways to burn calories. All of these activities count as moderate to vigorous exercise, which is recommended daily for most people.

• Workout indoor. Th is doesn’t necessarily mean heading to the nearest gym. It’s possible to get recommended exercise at home or at another location.

Walking briskly around a mall is good exercise and you can window shop in the process. Lift heavy items around the house in place of dumbbells. Doing regular household chores with more vigor

is another way to get blood fl owing and your heart pumping.

• Eat right. Eating the right foods to maintain a healthy weight goes a long way toward protecting the heart. Be sure to eat breakfast every day, and choose fruits and vegetables as snacks over sweet

Mission Community Services SocietyThe mandate of Mission Community Services Society

(MCSS) is to help people, change lives and build community. Founded in 1972, MCSS is now

one of the largest providers of social services in the District of Mission and outlying areas. MCSS provides a broad range of programs in eight service areas including Early Years, Youth, Families, Seniors, Multicultural, Housing, Mental Health, and Emergency Services. MCSS believes in enriching the lives of the residents of Mission through outreach and activity programs. For more information call Felice at 604-826-3634 or e-mail [email protected]

Lifetime Learning Centre SocietyFor 25 years, Lifetime Learning Centre Society has provided active living and healthy aging opportunities through its community and general interest adult education programming. We serve not only Mission’s older adults, but anyone interested in

just as healthy as fresh produce and can off er a variety of fl avours when certain foods are not in season. Also include plenty of foods high in fi bre.

• Dress appropriately. Weather is oft en unpredictable. Dress in layers so you can remove or add clothing as needed to remain comfortable. Children and older adults are more susceptible to the eff ects of cold weather. According to Jersey Shore University Medical Centre, when temperatures are low, your heart works harder to keep the body warm. Dressing warmly can help avoid taxing the heart. Th e same caution applies when the temperature is extremely warm. It’s easy for the elderly to overheat and become dehydrated. Dress in light clothing and remember to drink plenty of water. Before starting any exercise regimen, it is important to discuss

your plans with a physician. He or she can determine if you are physically capable of moderate exercise or if any illnesses may impede your ability.

Travelling in comfortMany styles of compression stockings available

Spring is a time to get out and about, get active and travel. More seniors are

travelling by car, bus or plane than ever and travel-related leg discomfort is on the rise.

During travel, blood circulation within the leg is reduced while your movement is constrained. Lack of movement can cause many symptoms such as heavy fatigued legs, pain and discomfort, varicose or spider veins and swollen feet or ankles. Prolonged sitting is also a risk factor for developing a blood clot which may result in pulmonary embolism.

Graduated compression therapy is the application of external pressure to the limb via a stocking

to reduce venous pressure within the limb. Wearing a compression sock will support your vein, increase circulation, reduce swelling and alleviate the tired achy feeling of legs.

Th ese are not the stockings your grandma used to wear. Th ey are available in all colours of the rainbow and fashionable fabrics. Th ere are even sports styles for athletes and dress socks for men.

Along with the application of compression stockings, here are a few tips for long distance travel:• Keep your feet moving. Foot exercises make the calf muscles work and help to pump blood back up to the heart. Point and fl ex your toes. Walk the aisle in a plane. In a car make regular rest stops to stretch your legs.

• Drink plenty of healthy beverages to prevent dehydration• Revitalize your legs with a cool shower or bath. Avoid extended exposure to heat or hot water

Pharmasave Health Center has been focusing on health and wellness for many years in Mission and has two certifi ed compression fi tters on staff . Dianne Menzer has been an employee with Pharmasave since 1979 and has been a certifi ed fi tter since 1998, and Chrystal Robinson has been a certifi ed fi tter since 2006. For more information on healthy legs and compression stockings visit your Live Well team at Pharmasave on Hurd Street across from the hospital. Ask your doctor about the benefi ts of compression therapy.
